Nasal ganoderma ulceration: Use almonds, removing the skin and tips. Wrap in paper and press to remove oil until it becomes a white powder. Mix two fen of almond powder with one qian of genuine calomel (mercurous chloride), blend evenly, and insufflate onto the affected area.
Continuous discharge of turbid nasal mucus is called Bi Yuan (nasal sinusitis). This is caused by wind-heat invading the brain. Use equal parts of stir-fried Xuanxiaozi (Cocklebur Fruit), Xinyiren (Magnolia Flower Bud), Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root), and Bohe (Mint Leaf). Grind into fine powder. Take one qian each time, mixed with scallion decoction before bedtime. Do not limit the number of doses; continue until healed.
Discharge of foul-smelling yellow fluid from the nose is called Kong Nao Sha. Use Zibeizi (Purple Cowrie Shell, commonly known as Nan She Ya Chi or Gou Ji Luo). Take two or three shells, calcine over fire, quench in vinegar, and grind into powder. Wrap in paper and place on the ground to remove fire toxicity. Take one qian per dose (two qian for adults), mixed with Si Gua Teng (Luffa Vine) decoction. Take on an empty stomach until healed.
For traumatic injury or abrasion of the nose: Immediately cut up hair from a cat's head, mix with saliva, apply topically, and it will heal spontaneously.
Gan sores eroding the nose causing severe ulceration: Burn Wu Beizi (Galla Chinensis) to ash while retaining its properties, grind into powder, and mix with lard (from pigs slaughtered in the twelfth lunar month) for topical application.
The Classic states: "The central color is yellow, connecting to the Spleen, opening into the mouth." It also says: "Spleen Qi communicates with the mouth; when the Spleen is harmonious, the mouth can perceive the five flavors." Thus, the mouth is the external manifestation of the Spleen. E Kou (Goose Mouth) refers to white patches covering the tongue and oral cavity, resembling a goose's beak. This is due to Lung heat exacerbated by Heart and Spleen heat, manifesting in the mouth. Internally administer Hangxie Dan; externally insufflate Baoming San.
Kou Chuang (Oral Ulcers) involves redness and erosion throughout the mouth. This results from strong congenital constitution, excessive warmth in upbringing, leading to accumulated heat in the Heart and Spleen steaming upwards. Internally administer Hangxie Dan; externally apply water-ground Di Ji (Agriolimax agrestis/Slug) to the ulcers. Di Ji is found under eaves.
Kou Mi (Oral Thrush/Mucositis) involves widespread ulceration in the mouth. This occurs when Heat transfers from the Bladder to the Small Intestine, causing stagnation in the diaphragm and intestines, with heat rising to form oral mucositis. Use Dao Chi San to clear Small Intestine heat and Wu Ling San to clear Bladder heat; combine both formulas for administration.
If oral ulcers do not respond to cooling herbs, it indicates deficiency of Liver and Spleen Qi with uncontrolled floating deficient fire. Use Lizhong Tang to anchor the floating fire; externally insufflate Shang Gui (Cinnamon Bark) powder. If ulcers appear after vomiting or diarrhea, it is also due to deficient fire; use Lizhong Tang. Ignorant practitioners assume all oral ulcers are excess heat and indiscriminately use cold herbs, which inevitably fails to cure.
Swelling on the upper palate resembling a suspended abscess is called Chong Yin. This is caused by Spleen and Stomach heat preventing Qi and Blood from consolidating. Prick with needles to release bad blood; internally administer Hangxie Dan; externally insufflate Bi Xue.
Saliva flowing from the cheeks of infants, soaking the chest, is called Zhi Yi. Saliva is the fluid of the Spleen, and the mouth is the orifice of the Spleen. Due to Spleen-Stomach deficiency-cold failing to consolidate fluids, saliva flows out and stagnates on the cheeks. Use Wen Pi Dan.
Frequent puckering of the lips in infants indicates disharmony of Qi. The lips correspond to the Spleen, and Qi originates from the Lung. Spleen deficiency fails to generate Lung Qi, causing lip puckering. Use Yigong San to tonify the Spleen and generate Lung Qi to cure.
Infants with puckered lips, cyanotic complexion, frequent crying, indicate extreme Yin-cold, Liver-Spleen deficiency-cold, and pain below the umbilicus. Warm with Lizhong Tang.
Infants eager to suckle but unable to do so have Heat in the Heart and Spleen, causing immobility of the tongue. Clear with Xie Huang San.
