The Spleen is prone to being constrained. In excess conditions, there is afternoon fever (occurring during the Shen hour, 15:00–17:00) and thirst with desire to drink water. In deficiency conditions, there is vomiting, diarrhea, and the generation of wind (internal stirring of wind leading to convulsions).
For excess conditions, use Xiehuang San (Elixir to Drain the Spleen) or Sanhuang Wan (Three Yellows Pill) to drain; for deficiency conditions, use Yihuang San (Elixir to Benefit the Spleen), Yigong San (Extraordinary Efficacy Powder), Xiao Jianzhong Tang (Minor Construct the Middle Decoction), Tiaoyuan Tang (Regulate Origin Decoction), or Fei'er Wan (Fatten Infant Pill) to tonify.
Xiehuang San (Elixir to Drain the Spleen): Treats tongue-playing caused by Spleen heat.
Ingredients: Huoxiang Ye (Agastache Leaf), Shanzhi Ren (Gardenia Seed), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root). The above are chopped, stir-fried with honey and wine until slightly fragrant, then ground into powder. Decoct in water and take warm.
Yihuang San (Elixir to Benefit the Spleen): Treats cold-deficiency of the Spleen and Stomach.
Ingredients: Chenpi (Aged Tangerine Peel), Qingpi (Green Tangerine Peel), Hezi (Chebula Fruit), Zhi Gancao (Honey-fried Licorice Root), Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos). Each two qian. The above are ground into powder. Decoct in water and take. Adjust dosage according to age and size.
This is a miraculous medicine for treating excessive cold-dampness of the Spleen and Stomach. It is erroneous to use it to tonify Spleen-Stomach deficiency. It should not be taken unless the disease presents as vomiting or diarrhea with clear/white excreta.
Li Dongyuan stated: Dingxiang is acrid and hot, assisting fire; when fire is vigorous, Earth becomes more deficient. Qingjupi drains Liver Qi, and Dingxiang heavily drains Lung and Large Intestine Qi. When Spleen-Stomach is in excess, one should drain its "child" organ (Heart). Now that Spleen-Stomach is deficient, draining the child and assisting fire will further deplete Earth, undoubtedly causing death. Therefore, Yigong San should be used instead.
Qian's Yigong San (Extraordinary Efficacy Powder): Warms the middle and harmonizes Qi. Treats vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, and pain due to Spleen-Stomach cold-deficiency.
Ingredients: Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Baifuling (Poria), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Zhi Gancao (Honey-fried Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium). Equal parts. The above are ground into powder. Take 1.5 to 2 qian per dose, decocted in water. This is Si Jun Zi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) plus Chenpi.
Tiaoyuan Tang (Regulate Origin Decoction): A sacred formula for tonifying the Spleen and Stomach and supporting Yuan Qi (Original Qi). It benefits Spleen Earth and drains Fire pathogenic factors; it is a key herb for tonifying Yuan Qi.
Ingredients: Huangqi (Astragali Radix, honey-fried), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma). Equal parts. Zhi Gancao (Honey-fried Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), half amount. Decoct in water and take at any time.
Xiao Jianzhong Tang (Minor Construct the Middle Decoction): Treats deficiency damage of Zhong Qi (Middle Qi) in the Spleen and Stomach. Adding Huangqi makes it Huangqi Jianzhong Tang (Astragalus Construct the Middle Decoction).
Ingredients: Baishao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, wine-fried), Zhi Gancao (Honey-fried Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma). Equal parts. Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), half amount. Chop and grind into powder. Decoct in water to form the liquid, remove dregs, add one spoonful of Bai Xi (White Sugar/Maltose), boil once more, and take warm.
Fei'er Wan (Fatten Infant Pill): Children with inherently weak Spleen and Stomach eat little and are thin. Or, those with strong constitution may become thin after occasional food stagnation or following a severe illness. This is a family secret recipe.
Ingredients: Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Baifuling (Poria), Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, steamed), Lianrou (Nelumbinis Semen), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, wine-washed). Each five qian. Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) two qian. Qingpi (Green Tangerine Peel), Muxiang (Vladimiriae Radix), Sharen (Amomi Fructus). Form pills the size of hemp seeds. Take 15, 25, 35, 45, up to 50 pills per dose, delivered with rice water.
