[Guiling Wuweigan Decoction] (from *Jin Gui Yao Lue*) Treats cough with rebellious Qi rushing upward from the lower abdomen.
Composition: Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) [Note: Text says Guizhi, but context implies herb Cinnamon Twig], Fuling (Poria, each 4 liang), Zhigancao (Honey-fried Licorice Root, 3 qian), Wuweizi (Schisandra Berry, 2 qian).
Decoction and administration: Decoct in water, remove dregs, take warm in three divided doses.
[Guiling Wuweigan Qu Gui Jia Jiang Xin Tang] (from *Jin Gui Yao Lue*)
Based on Guiling Wuweigan Decoction, remove Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig), add Ganjiang (Dried Ginger) and Xixin (Asarum), each 3 qian. If accompanied by vomiting and rebellious Qi, add Banxia (Pinellia Tuber), 2 qian; if body swelling occurs, add Xingren (Apricot Seed), 2 qian; if the face is red as if intoxicated, add Dahuang (Rhubarb Root), 3 qian.
[Shegan Mahuang Decoction] (from *Jin Gui Yao Lue*, "She" pronounced like "Ye") Treats cough with asthma, where the throat makes a sound like a water chicken (frog).
Composition: Shegan (Belamcanda Rhizome, 3 qian), Mahuang (Ephedra Stem, de-segmented, 4 qian), Xixin (Asarum, 1 qian), Ziwan (Aster Root), Kuandonghua (Farfugonis Flos, each 3 qian), Wuweizi (Schisandra Berry, 1 qian, crushed), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, washed, 2 qian), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, 4 slices), Dazao (Jujube Fruit, 2 pieces, torn open).
Decoction and administration: First decoct Mahuang (Ephedra Stem), remove the foam on top, then add the remaining herbs. Once the decoction is ready, remove dregs, take warm in three divided doses.
[Nongpo Mahuang Decoction] (from *Jin Gui Yao Lue*) Treats cough with a floating pulse, asthma with chest fullness, and throat obstruction with a sound like a water chicken.
Composition: Nongpo (Magnolia Bark, half liang), Mahuang (Ephedra Stem, de-segmented, 4 qian), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, size of an egg, crushed), Xingren (Apricot Seed, skin and tip removed, half liang), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, washed, half liang), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger, 2 qian), Xixin (Asarum, 1 qian), Wuweizi (Schisandra Berry, half qian, crushed), Xiaomai (Triticum Semen, one he).
Decoction and administration: First decoct Xiaomai (Triticum Semen), remove dregs, then add the remaining herbs. Once the decoction is ready, remove dregs, take warm in three divided doses. Note: This formula is based on the principles of Maxing Gan Shi Tang (Ephedra Apricot Kernel Licorice Gypsum Decoction), Yuespi Banxia Tang (Yuebi Pinellia Decoction), and Da/ Xiao Qinglong Tang (Major/Minor Green Dragon Decoctions). It uses Nongpo (Magnolia Bark) as the chief herb to disperse Qi stagnation with its acrid-warm nature, and Xiaomai (Triticum Semen) as the assistant to tonify Liver Qi and assist Stomach Qi. It is the primary sweating formula for the northwest regions.
[Zeqi Tang] (from *Jin Gui Yao Lue*) Treats cough with a deep pulse, asthma, and throat obstruction.
Composition: Zeqi (Phytolaccae Radix, i.e., seedling of Euphorbia lathyris, 1 liang), Baiqian (Cynanchum Root, resembling Xixin but white, produced in Huizhou sandy waters, available in Huizhou pharmacies), Zishen (Scrophulariae Radix or similar, if unavailable, substitute with Ziwan/Aster Root), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, washed), Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig, Qianjin Fang uses Guixin/Cinnamon Heart), Renshen (Ginseng Root), Gancao (Licorice Root), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), each 1 qian; Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, 4 slices).
Decoction and administration: The above nine ingredients. First decoct Zeqi (Phytolaccae Radix), remove dregs, then add the remaining herbs. Once the decoction is ready, remove dregs, take warm until finished by nightfall.
[Maidong Tang] (from *Jin Gui Yao Lue*) Treats rebellious Qi due to Fire pathogen, with throat obstruction.
Composition: Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber, heart removed, 1 liang), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, washed, 1.5 qian), Renshen (Ginseng Root, 1 qian), Zhigancao (Honey-fried Licorice Root, 6 fen), Jingmi (Glutinous Rice, half he), Dazao (Jujube Fruit, 4 pieces, torn open).
Decoction and administration: The above six ingredients. Decoct in water, take warm: three times during the day, once at night. Note: This formula is derived from Baihu Jia Renshen Tang (White Tiger Plus Ginseng Decoction) by removing Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) and Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), and adding Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber), and Dazao (Jujube Fruit).
[Jinfei Cao San] Treats Lung affected by Wind-Cold, causing cough, nasal congestion, and heavy voice.
Composition: Xuanfuhua (Inulae Flos, i.e., Jinfei Cao), Mahuang (Ephedra Stem, de-segmented, honey-processed), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), each 7 fen; Jingjie Sui (Schizonepeta Spike), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber), Zhigancao (Honey-fried Licorice Root), Shaoyao (Peony Root), each 5 fen; Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, 3 slices), Dazao (Jujube Fruit, 1 piece, torn open).
Decoction and administration: Decoct in water, filter clear liquid, take warm.
[Xiaofeng San] (from *Ju Fang*) Treats Wind-Heat cough, general body scabies and lymphatic swellings, and residual heat from childhood exanthems.
Composition: Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Jingjie Sui (Schizonepeta Spike), Huoxiang (Pogostemonis Herba), Renshen (Ginseng Root), Fuling (Poria), Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus), Chantui (Cicada Slough), equal parts; Zhigancao (Honey-fried Licorice Root), Chenpi (Citrus Reticulata Peel), Nongpo (Magnolia Bark, ginger-processed, half dose).
Decoction and administration: The above twelve ingredients are powdered. Take 3-4 qian per dose, mixed with tea liquor; or use 5 qian, decoct in water, remove dregs, and take. For chronic headache and corneal opacity, taking it three times daily is effective. The brilliance of this formula lies entirely in Nongpo (Magnolia Bark) and Renshen (Ginseng Root). One must know that exterior diseases all originate from internal stomach/spleen issues. Thus, Nongpo (Magnolia Bark) clears the interior, while Renshen (Ginseng Root) assists the wind-dispelling herbs to resolve Wind-Heat externally, allowing herbs like Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), and Jingjie (Schizonepeta) to exert their efficacy.
[Xiebai San] Treats Lung Heat cough, with heat in the palms and soles.
Composition: Sanggenpi (Morus Alba Root Bark, fried with ginger juice and honey), Digupi (Lycii Cortex), each 1 liang; Zhigancao (Honey-fried Licorice Root, 5 qian).
Decoction and administration: Powdered. Take 4-5 qian per dose, add 100 grains of Jingmi (Glutinous Rice) and a handful of Zhuye (Bambusae Folium), decoct in water, and take. Adding Juhong (Citrus Paradisi Exocarp) and Jiegeng (Platycodon Root) is named Jiawei Xiebai San (Modified Xiebai Powder). If there is heat, add Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) and Huangqin (Scutellaria Root). Contraindicated if there is an external pathogenic factor. Question: Digupi (Lycii Cortex) is a herb for the Sanjiao Qi level; what is the rationale for using it in Xiebai San? Answer: The Sanjiao belongs to the Kidney. In cases of excess, drain the "child" organ (according to Five Element theory, draining Metal to benefit Water, or specific lineage logic). Disciple replies: "Yes, my Way is consistent throughout."
[Luxi San] Treats Cold Asthma and Cold Cough, with rapid breathing and clear phlegm. Contraindicated for Lung Heat.
Composition: Kuandonghua (Farfugonis Flos), Chuanbeimu (Fritillaria Cirrhosa Bulb, heart removed), Rougui (Cinnamon Bark), Zhigancao (Honey-fried Licorice Root), each 3 qian; Euguan Shi (Stalactitum, 5 qian, i.e., the most refined part of Stalagmites).
Usage: Grind into an extremely fine powder. Inhale a small amount through a reed tube, hold in mouth, and swallow. Do this 5-7 times daily. This is a variation of the Fenxiang Touge San (Incense Penetrating Diaphragm Powder) from *Xuan Ming Lun Fang*. That formula uses Xionghuang (Realgar) and Foer Cao (Petasites); this formula uses Guixin (Cinnamon Heart), Beimu (Fritillaria Bulb), and Gancao (Licorice Root). That formula uses formless Qi to scatter latent Cold in the Lung; this formula uses a tangible powder to search out latent Fluid retention in the Lung collaterals. Although the herbs are similar, the methods differ greatly. The goal is to utilize the warming of the Lung and unblocking of orifices by Stalagmites (Zhuru) and Farfugonis Flos (Kuandonghua).
[Qianjin Bufei Tang] Treats cough due to Lung and Stomach Deficiency-Cold.
Composition: Wuweizi (Schisandra Berry, 1 qian), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger), Guixin (Cinnamon Heart), Kuandonghua (Farfugonis Flos), Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber, heart removed), each 3 qian; Sangbaipi (Morus Alba Root Bark, fried with ginger juice and honey to yellow, 2 qian), Dazao (Jujube Fruit, 3 pieces, torn open).
Decoction and administration: Boil in water, take warm in three divided doses.
[Ziwan Rong Tang] (Revised) Treats cough with blood in sputum caused by excessive alcohol damaging the Lung.
Composition: Ziwan Rong (Aster Root Hairs, 3 qian), Weixian (Adenophorae Radix or similar), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, best from Yuqian, raw), Zexie (Alisma Rhizome), each 1 qian; Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex), Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber, heart removed), each 1.5 qian; Xijiao (Rhinoceros Horn, 8 fen - *Note: Modern substitutes like Water Buffalo Horn are used*), Zhigancao (Honey-fried Licorice Root, 3 fen raw, 2 fen fried), Ouji (Lotus Root Juice, half cup).
Decoction and administration: The above nine ingredients. Decoct in water, take after meals. Thin people with Yin Deficiency and abundant Fire should avoid drying herbs; remove Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) and replace with Baishaoyao (White Peony Root), 1 qian.
