Zhishi Shaoyao San (Cinnamon Twig and Peony Powder, from *Jin Gui Yao Lue*): Treats postpartum abdominal pain, irritability, fullness, and inability to lie down.
Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange), roasted until black but not overly so; Shaoyao (White Peony Root), equal parts.
The above two ingredients are pounded into a powder. Take one fangcun bi (a traditional Chinese measure for powder) per dose, three times daily. It also primarily treats abscesses and pus (purulent infections). Administer with millet gruel. The roasting of Zhishi in the formula is entirely for dispersing and driving out blood stasis and accumulation; therefore, it can also manage abscesses.
Zhuye Tang (Bamboo Leaf Decoction, from *Jin Gui Yao Lue*): Treats postpartum wind-stroke, fever, reddish face, panting, chest fullness, and headache.
Zhuye (Bamboo Leaves), one handful; Gegen (Kudzu Root); Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root); Jiegeng (Platycodon Root); Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig); Renshen (Ginseng Root); Gancao (Licorice Root), roasted, each one qian; Dazao (Jujube Fruit), four pieces; Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), three slices.
The above nine ingredients are decocted in water and taken warm. Cover the patient to induce sweating. If there is neck stiffness, add Fuzi (Aconite Root); if there is vomiting, add Banxia (Pinellia Tuber). This formula is based on Guizhi Tang, removing Shaoyao and adding Zhuye, Gegen, Fangfeng, Jiegeng, and Renshen. Because the additional Fuzi mentioned in the post-formula notes has historically been confused as part of the main formula, this clarification is made to avoid mixing them up during consultation.
Zhupi Dawan (Bamboo Peel Large Pill, from *Jin Gui Yao Lue*): Treats postpartum deficiency-irritability and nausea/vomiting.
Shengzhuru (Raw Bamboo Shavings); Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), each half liang; Gancao (Licorice Root), roasted, one liang; Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig); Baiwei (Anemarrhena Rhizome or similar cooling herb, contextually often Anemarrhena or similar), each two qian and half.
The above five ingredients are powdered. Mix with jujube paste to form pills the size of a bullet. Take one pill with water, three times during the day and twice at night. If there is heat, double the dosage of Baiwei; if there is irritability and fullness, add Baishi (Biota Seed).
Qianjin Sanwu Huangqin Tang (Thousand Golden Three-Ingredient Scutellaria Decoction, from *Jin Gui Yao Lue*, cited from *Qian Jin Fang*): Treats postpartum irritability and heat.
Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), one qian; Kushen (Sophora Root), two qian; Gadihuang (Dried Rehmannia Root), four qian.
The above three ingredients are decocted in water and taken hot. These three herbs are purely yin, bitter, cold, damaging to the stomach qi, and stagnating to blood flow. Although there is irritability and heat postpartum, they should not be used lightly. When this formula was originally established, it must have been intended for patients with robust constitutions, abundant qi and blood, excess pulse and symptoms, ability to eat, and hard stools, who could tolerate such medication. Users must examine carefully. (The principle is seen under Qianjin Sanhuang Tang in the Wind-Stroke section.)
Diseng San: Treats postpartum abdominal and hypochondriac fullness and vomiting.
Renshen (Ginseng Root); Banxia (Pinellia Tuber), each one liang; Chishaoyao (Red Peony Root), six qian; Zelan Ye (Lycopus Leaf), four qian; Jupi (Tangerine Peel), three qian; Gancao (Licorice Root), roasted, three qian.
Make into a powder. Take four or five qian per dose, decoct in water, add several spoons of Jiangzhi (Ginger Juice), and take hot including the dregs. Take two to three times daily, effective when vomiting stops. If there is blood stasis, add half a liang of Paohei Shan Zhang Rou (Charred Hawthorn Flesh). Regarding Chishaoyao in the formula, its nature is sour and cold, which is not suitable for postpartum vomiting. It is more appropriate to substitute it with Chifuling (Red Poria) to promote urination and stop vomiting. This is likely a transcription error.
