[Ranghua (Adenophorae Radix)]
Bitter, pungent, slightly cold. Toxic. It can guide medicinal power downward to the water metabolism of the twelve meridians, sweeping away evil accumulations in the chest. It treats sore throat and swelling, stubborn phlegm causing cough and counterflow qi.
Use after stir-frying until reddish-brown. Contraindicated for those with weak Qi and Blood.
(37 species of vine herbs)
[Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus)]
Works well when used with wine. Dioscoreae Rhizoma (Shuyu) and Pinus Resina (Songzhi) act as guides. Averse to Jun (fungi/mold).
Pungent, sweet, neutral. Nature is warm. Enters the blood aspect of the three Yin meridians of the foot. Endowed with the Qi of harmony, condensing the nature of correct Yang, warming without being drying. Benefits essence and marrow, strengthens sinews and bones. Treats nocturnal emission during dreams, seminal emission, hematuria and dribbling, red and white turbid leukorrhea, lower back pain and cold knees, dispels wind and brightens eyes, stops diarrhea and secures essence. Paired with Scrophulariae Radix (Yuanshen), it tonifies Kidney Yin without dryness. Paired with Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Shudi), it tonifies Ying Qi without heat. Paired with Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong), it treats red turbidity. Paired with Myristicae Semen (Roudoukou), it promotes appetite. (When the Stomach is warm, appetite opens.) Assisted by Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus (Yizhiren), it warms Wei Qi. Guided by Plantaginis Semen (Cheqianzi), it treats difficult labor with transverse presentation. Harmonized with Album Ovi Galli (Jizibai), it treats dim vision. Washed with rice water, soaked in wine for four to five days, steamed and sun-dried four to five times, ground into cakes, baked dry for use. To tonify Kidney Qi, stir-fry with light salt water. To warm the Spleen and Stomach, decoct with Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma (Huangjing) juice. To warm muscles, stir-fry with wine. To treat diarrhea, stir-fry with wine and rice. Contraindicated for pregnant women (due to its slippery nature), uterine bleeding (as warmth moves blood), persistent erection, constipation, Fire in the Kidney store, and Yin deficiency with hyperactive Fire; these six conditions are contraindications. The seeds of Tianbi grass look similar but taste sour and astringent, unsuitable for medicinal use.
This herb has no roots, growing by borrowing Qi. For those with depleted Yuan Jing (Essence), it is used to tonify, which is called "treating falsehood with falsehood." Only in cases of cold in the urethra and spontaneous seminal emission should such warming and tonifying agents be used, so that the essence receives nourishment and stops leaking spontaneously. If leakage is due to deficient Fire, taking it will cause fluids to become even more unstable, and the more one tonifies, the more it overflows.
Cistanches Herba (Congrong) acts as a guide. Averse to Smilacis Glabrae Rhizoma (Weirui). Surpasses Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (Wutou).
The skin and flesh are sweet and sour; the seed is bitter and pungent; all parts have a warm nature. Enters the blood aspect of the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian, and concurrently enters the Qi aspect of the Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. It astringes the dissipating Qi of the Lung channel, and gathers the lost Yuan Qi of the Kidney. It contracts dilated pupils, and astringes the overflow of Yin and Yang sweat. It reduces deficient heat, stops thirst and restlessness, calms asthma and stops coughing, strengthens Water to suppress Yang. Assisted by Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia), it treats phlegm. Assisted by Equisetum Herba (Ejiao - *Note: Standard WHO term for Ejiao is Asini Corii Colla, but context implies mucilage/stop bleeding, here likely referring to Donkey-hide gelatin or similar binding agent, assuming standard text context usually implies Asini Corii Colla*), it stabilizes asthma. Assisted by Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang), it treats winter cold cough. Assisted by Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma [missing character in source, typically Renshen], it treats summer fatigue. Assisted by Viticis Fructus (Manjingzi), it washes rotting margin wind-eye. Assisted by Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong) and Terminaliae Chebulae Fructus (Wubeizi), it treats evening cough. Combined with Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu), it treats Kidney diarrhea (i.e., dawn diarrhea). Made into pills with vinegar paste, it treats piercing pain in the hypochondrium and back. Evening cough is caused by floating Fire entering the Lung; coolants are inappropriate. Instead, Wuweizi and Wubeizi should be used to astringe and descend the Fire.
For consumptive cough, Northern Wuweizi is preferred. For Wind-Cold cough, Southern Wuweizi is preferred. For tonic medicines, use processed (ripe) form. For treating deficient Fire, use raw form. For astringing the Lung, use small doses. For nourishing Yin, use large doses. For stopping diarrhea, crush it. For benefiting the Kidney, do not grind it. For moistening the Lung and nourishing Water, it can be steamed with honey. Overuse may obstruct the meridians, causing Yuan Qi to stagnate and transform into Fire. It is contraindicated in the early stages of cough and dysentery if there is excess Fire.
Zhang Zhongjing's Ba Wei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill) removes Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root) and adds Wuweizi to gather and secure the True Yuan, making the Dantian warm, aiding the digestion of grains, which is most safe and sound. This is because the Kidney stores Essence; when Essence is abundant, Fire is nourished and does not scatter. This differs vastly from Fuzi, which assists Fire and thereby depletes Water.
