Treats all conditions of Yang deficiency and Qi weakness. The pulse is deficient and soft; the Spleen is衰 (declining) and the Lungs are damaged; there is little desire for food, emaciation with sallow complexion (or dry skin lacking luster), hair loss, faint voice, weakness in the four limbs, as well as disharmony of the Spleen and Stomach, presenting with diarrhea, dysentery, or distension due to deficiency.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, stir-fried with soil), Fu Ling (Poria), each 2 qian; Gan Cao (Licorice Root), 1 qian. Add Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus).
Ren Shen is sweet and warm, greatly tonifying Yuan Qi, serving as the Sovereign herb. Bai Zhu is bitter and warm, drying dampness and tonifying Spleen Qi, serving as the Minister herb. Fu Ling is sweet and bland, leaching out dampness and draining heat, serving as the Assistant herb. Gan Cao is sweet and neutral, harmonizing the Middle Jiao and benefiting Earth, serving as the Envoy herb. When Qi is sufficient, Spleen transportation functions normally, food intake doubles, and the remaining organs receive nourishment, resulting in a rosy complexion and strong physique.
Add Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) to regulate Qi and disperse rebellion, named Yi Gong San (Heterogeneous Power Powder, from Qian Yi), used to regulate the Spleen and Stomach. Further add Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) to dry dampness and eliminate phlegm, named Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction).
Treats Spleen and Stomach Qi deficiency where food intake is poor, leading to the formation of Phlegm-Pi (phlegm accumulation), frequent coughing and expectoration; or Stomach Qi deficiency and cold, prone to vomiting and nausea. For any deficiency-type malaria and post-illness states, (except those with true Yin depletion, who must strictly avoid this Spleen-tonifying formula to prevent damaging Kidney Water.) Add Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma) and Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus Rotundus), named Xiang Sha Liu Jun Zi Tang (Xiang Sha Six Gentlemen Decoction). Treats deficiency-cold stomach pain, or abdominal pain with diarrhea. Liu Jun Zi Tang added with Zhu Li (Bambusae Succus) and Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix) treats inability to move the four limbs. (The Spleen governs the four limbs.) Liu Jun Zi Tang added with Wu Mei (Mume Fructus) and Cao Guo (Tsaoko Fructus) in equal parts, decocted with Sheng Jiang and Da Zao, named Si Shou Yin (Four Beasts Drink). (Based on the theory of Three Causes and Four Organs to assist the Spleen, hence the name.) Treats Qi deficiency of the Five Zang organs, complicated by Seven Emotions, forming phlegm-fluid retention that combats with Wei Qi, manifesting as malaria; also treats miasma malaria. Liu Jun Zi Tang added with Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Ge Gen (Puerariae Radix), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), and Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), named Shi Wei Ren Shen San (Ten-Flavor Ginseng Powder). Treats deficiency fever and tidal fever, with body fatigue. Added with Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) and Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), it is also called Liu Jun Zi Tang. It serves as a formula for post-illness recovery to aid the Spleen and promote appetite. Added with Suan Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, stir-fried) to treat palpitations, tremors, and insomnia (from Hu Qia Ju Tu). Added with Sheng Jiang juice and Zhu Li to treat hemiplegia; right-sided paralysis belongs to Qi deficiency, and it also treats sudden death due to Phlegm-Jue. Added with Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Huo Xiang (Agastaches Herba), and Gan Ge (Puerariae Radix), named Qi Wei Bai Zhu San (Seven-Flavor Atractylodes Powder, from Qian Yi). Treats Spleen deficiency with muscular heat, diarrhea, and thirst due to deficiency-heat. (Ren Shen, Bai Zhu, and Gan Ge can all generate fluids.) Yang Ren Qi further adds Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus) and Chai Hu to treat Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst) with anorexia. Remove Ren Shen and add Bai Shao, named San Bai Tang (Three Whites Decoction). Regulates internal injury and external contraction, treating deficiency vexation, thirst, or diarrhea. Added with Shan Yao and Bian Dou (Dolichos Lablab Seed), decocted with Sheng Jiang and Da Zao, named Liu Shen San (Six Gods Powder, from Chen Wuzhe). Treats children whose exterior heat has subsided but fever recurs. (Physicians of the world often fail to understand this stage. Some use cooling medicines again, some attempt to release the exterior again, some declare it untreatable. This is because both interior and exterior are deficient, Qi does not return to its root, and Yang floats outward, causing recurrent fever; this is not a heat syndrome. It is appropriate to use this decoction with Jing Mi (Oryza Sativa Germ) to harmonize Stomach Qi, thereby gathering Yang back inside and cooling the body. If accompanied by cold, add Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex). If accompanied by Yin deficiency, add Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata).) Si Jun Zi Tang combined with Si Wu Tang is named Ba Zhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction). Treats dual deficiency of Qi and Blood, and cases where Stomach damage prevents food from transforming into muscle. If the injury is severe, with True Yin exhausted internally and Deficient Yang bulging externally, causing various symptoms to arise like swarming insects, then within Si Wu Tang and Si Jun Zi Tang, add Huang Qi to assist Yang and consolidate the exterior, and add Rou Gui to guide fire back to its source, named Shi Quan Da Bu Tang (Complete Great Tonifying Decoction). (The *Jin Gui Yao Lue* states: "For deficiency, tenfold tonification should be used, do not purge." This decoction exemplifies this principle.) Shi Quan Da Bu Tang uses Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) as the Sovereign, further adding Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Du Zhong (Eucommiae Cortex), and Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), named Da Fang Feng Tang (Great Saposhnikovia Decoction), treating He Xi Feng (Crane's Knee Wind / Gonarthrosis). Shi Quan Da Bu Tang removes Chuan Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma) and adds Chen Pi, named Wen Jing Yi Yuan San (Warming Meridians and Benefiting Origin Powder, from Jie An). Treats dizziness and palpitations after sweating, muscle twitching, or profuse sweating; or persistent diarrhea after purgation, with body pain. (Tai Yang disorders are suitable for sweating; excessive sweating leads to loss of Yang, hence dizziness, palpitations, and muscle twitching syndromes. Yang Ming disorders are suitable for purgation; excessive purgation leads to loss of Yin, hence diarrhea and body pain syndromes.)
