Xu Yizong treated Empress Dowager Liu of Tang for wind disease, presenting with a deep pulse and locked jaw. Xu Yizong said: "Since oral medication cannot be administered, decoction steam should be used for fumigation, allowing the medicinal properties to penetrate the Couli (skin texture and muscle interstices)."
For treating Lei Tou Feng (Thunderhead Wind), characterized by nodules on the head and face, swelling, pain, aversion to cold, and high fever resembling Shanghan (Cold Damage) syndrome. (Another account states: the head feels like thundering, making sounds when wind blows.) Li Dongyuan stated: "When the pathogen is in the Three Yang meridians, heavy cold-natured medicines should not be overused to avoid damaging healthy Qi; instead, Qing Zhen Tang (Clear and Shake Decoction) should be prescribed. The Qi of the Three Yang meridians converges at... those from the forehead to the vertex, connecting to the brain posteriorly, belong to the Taiyang Meridian. Those from the forehead to below the nose belong to the Yangming Meridian. Those from the temporal angle down through the ear and anterior/posterior to the ear belong to the Shaoyang Meridian."
Prescription: Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae), Cangzhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Chinensis, 5 qian), Heye (Folium Nelumbinis, one leaf).
Shengma has a warm-yang nature, sweet taste, and ascending aroma, capable of resolving hundred toxins. Cangzhu is pungent and acrid, drying dampness and strengthening the Spleen, capable of warding off miasma; this is the Shengma Tang from the Bureau Formula. Heye's color... (text missing/garbled, implying the property of raising clear Yang).
(Regarding cold pathogenic factors causing disease, there are those where Yin pathogens invade the exterior, those where raw/cold food damages the interior, and those where Yin cold directly strikes the Zang organs. These are all external colds that people easily... (text missing/garbled, implying neglect their harm). Zhu Danxi said... Yang Qi... (text missing/garbled, implying damage to Yang Qi). No sound... also... abdomen... stop... wine... warm... syndrome... unaware of the merit of returning Yang, one should use... . However, Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata) is fierce in nature; using it alone... brave, thus nothing will be unfavorable.)
(Zhang Zhongjing) treats Taiyin disease of Shanghan, spontaneous diarrhea without thirst. (Wang Haizang said: If upper vomiting and lower diarrhea persist, thirst should be present but is absent, and the pulse is faint, thin, and weak, Lizhong Tang is the primary treatment. Diarrhea resulting from the transmission of Three Yang diseases into Yin meridians is called Xie Re Li (Collateral Heat Diarrhea). Diarrhea caused by direct strike of Yin cold into Yin meridians is called Han Li (Cold Diarrhea). In Three Yang diarrhea accompanied by body heat, Taiyin diarrhea presents with warm hands and feet, while Shaoyin and Jueyin diarrhea present with cold bodies; these are general principles. Even if there are exterior symptoms with diarrhea, sweating therapy is contraindicated. Because diarrhea indicates internal attack by pathogens, consuming Body Fluids and causing Stomach deficiency.) If cold is abundant with vomiting, abdominal pain, and loose stools. (Taiyin refers to the Spleen Meridian. Abdominal fullness with vomiting, inability to eat, spontaneous diarrhea and abdominal pain constitute Taiyin disease. Spontaneous diarrhea with thirst indicates Heat; lack of thirst with desire to vomit, abdominal pain, and loose stools are all caused by Deficiency-Cold. Abdominal pain caused by external pathogens transmitting inward is intermittent. Abdominal pain caused by internal Yin cold is unceasing. Frequent urge to defecate. The greater abdomen belongs to Taiyin, the lesser abdomen to Shaoyin, and the area below the umbilicus to Jueyin; there are also cases complicated by Food Stagnation or Phlegm-Fire.) Pulse is deep and powerless, or there is cold extremities and stiffness/spasms. (Cold binding the exterior.) Or chest knotting with expulsion of roundworms, (Cold congealing in the Middle Jiao.) and Huoluan (Colic disorder) induced by cold exposure. (Disorder of Yin and Yang leading to chaotic turmoil. Either vomiting or diarrhea, presenting either Cold or Heat syndromes. If caused by Deficiency-Cold, this decoction is suitable.)
For any Deficiency-Cold of the Central Palace (Spleen and Stomach), where Qi fails to regulate various syndromes, this formula is appropriate. It differentiates and regulates Yin and Yang, harmonizing and calming Stomach Qi.
Prescription: Baizhu (Atractodis Rhizoma, stir-fried with soil from old wall, 2 liang), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, processed), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried), Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 1 liang). Add Muxiang (Vladimiriae Radix) for spontaneous diarrhea with abdominal pain. If no pain but frequent diarrhea... (text missing/garbled). Shaoyin syndrome... movement below umbilicus... jaundice add... (text missing/garbled). Ling liao liao... Zhong Wan.
Renshen tonifies Qi and benefits the Spleen, thus serving as the Jun (Emperor) herb. Baizhu strengthens the Spleen and dries Dampness, thus serving as the Chen (Minister) herb. Gancao harmonizes the Middle and tonifies Earth, thus serving as the Zuo (Assistant) herb. Ganjiang warms the Stomach... (text missing/garbled, implying warming the Middle and dispersing cold). Therefore... Adding one piece of Fuzi to this base formula names it Fuzi Lizhong Tang. (It can also be made into pills, which is Sixni Tang [Four Reversal Decoction] plus Renshen and Baizhu.) It treats abdominal and body pain due to Middle Cold, and limb spasms... Huan bu... Mugua... (text missing/garbled). Jing... jie zhong... da... zhong... shi... effective as a spirit. For thirst, add Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix). For spontaneous sweating, add Muli Fen (Concha Ostreae powder). Remove Gancao, add Fuling (Poria), Chuanjiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium), and Wumei (Mume Fructus), naming it Lizhong Anhui Wan (Lizhong Roundworm-Calming Pill). (Tao... Bai... Huang... man... add...
