此方尤在泾渭为“使中气运而湿热化”。陈元犀谓“补虚而化湿热”。徐大椿渭“蚀于喉为惑,即热淫于上之意”。病者茧唇,自系热淫于上,然病势至此,已呈虚象。宜补虚化湿热,舍此莫属。方中自洋参补脾肺之虚,并健运中气而化湿热。芩、连泄热,得干姜之温则虽寒而不滞,干姜虽热,得参、草之润而不燥。奇正相倚,并得法夏之降逆,使芩、连清降之热得以引而下行。故上方服一剂后,患儿即安静不啼,且能入睡。翌日热退汗止,唇肿渐消。二诊继以养胃阴善后。处方;

Third visit: After taking three doses, the redness and pain in the left eye and the headache had basically subsided. To consolidate the curative effect, Xiao Bai Fuzi Decoction (Little White Aconite Decoction) was used again with added Kouqi (Astragali Radix, Huangqi) to tonify Qi, raise Yang, reach the exterior, and secure the Defensive Qi (Wei Qi). After taking several doses, all ailments were eliminated, except that vision had not fully recovered and hair had not regrown. This is due to the prolonged illness consuming the body's Essence and Qi, resulting in insufficient Ying-Blood and deficiency of both Liver and Kidney. The treatment shifted to a formula for tonifying Qi and nourishing Blood, nourishing Liver and Kidney, brightening the eyes, and promoting hair growth. The prescription was as follows:
Lupangshen (Codonopsis Radix) 15g, Baiziren (Platycladi Semen) 9g, Shanyurou (Corni Fructus) 12g, Tusizi (Cuscutae Semen) 15g, Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix) 9g.
The Spleen is the source of production and transformation; Lupangshen tonifies the Spleen and Stomach, benefiting Qi and Blood. The Heart governs Blood; Baiziren nourishes Heart Blood and calms the Spirit. The Kidney governs Water and stores Essence; Essence and Qi ascend to the eyes. Tusizi tonifies the Kidney and benefits Essence; *Ben Cao Jing* states it "brightens the eyes with long-term use." The Liver stores Blood, and the eyes see when nourished by Blood. Shanyurou nourishes Yin, assists Yang, nourishes Blood, and secures Essence; *Ben Cao Jing* states it "brightens the eyes and strengthens the body with long-term use." Combined with Dangshen, it tonifies both Qi and Blood. Particularly ingenious is the addition of Xuanshen entering the Kidney to nourish Water, thereby涵 (nourishing/containing) Liver Wood. Such a combination benefits Qi, Blood, Liver, and Kidney; there is no worry about unclear vision or inability to regrow hair!
Continuing with this prescription for over twenty doses, vision gradually clarified, hair regrew, and the disease was cured.
[Editor's Note]: "Opening the Door Method" is one of Dr. Dai Lisan's main experiences in treating certain chronic and long-standing diseases. For diseases caused by external pathogens, this method is often used first. "Opening the door" refers to unblocking the Qi mechanism of the Taiyang (Greater Yang) channel, meaning "opening the door to drive out the bandit." Pathogens invading the human body often enter via the Taiyang channel; if the exterior can be resolved promptly, pathogens will not remain to cause harm. However, in prolonged illnesses where interior and exterior are mixed, "opening the door" can unblock the meridians, allow external pathogens to exit, reveal the true nature of the disease, and create conditions for subsequent medication. When using this method, as long as the pathogenesis is true Cold, one should not be confused by false signs and generally use Acrid-Warm dispersing agents, then treat flexibly according to changes in the condition.
Kidney Deficiency with White Pannus in Both Eyes
Zhang XX, Female, 50 years old. After experiencing emotional stimulation, white pannus appeared in both eyes, causing blurred vision accompanied by headache. The illness had lasted for over a month, and she came to the clinic supported by family members. Signs included: deep, fine, and weak pulse; blue tongue body; white and greasy coating; dark and dull complexion. Reviewing previously taken prescriptions, they were mostly for clearing Liver heat and brightening the eyes. *Huangdi Neijing* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon) states: "The Essence and Qi of all Zang-Fu organs ascend to the eyes." If Essence and Qi are deficient, vision becomes unclear. Qing Dynasty physician Huang Kunzai, discussing the worsening of eye diseases due to misuse of Cold-Cooling herbs, wrote phrases such as "Solar light scatters, Clear Qi sinks and is obstructed, Turbid Qi stagnates and rises, clouds and mist obscure, thus pannus forms." Based on this inference, although this case originated from internal injury by Seven Emotions, its pathogenesis is actually due to internal Cold-Dampness failing to transform, decline of Kidney Qi, and failure of Clear Yang to ascend. The treatment method first uses agents to warm and disperse Cold-Dampness, then discusses tonifying the Kidney and raising Yang. The prescription modified from self-formulated Xiao Bai Fuzi Decoction was:
Xiao Zifu (Small Prepared Aconite Root) 30g, Fuling (Poria) 15g, Ming Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma) 9g, Weiruren (Polygonati Rhizoma) 9g, Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) 9g, Hangshao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 9g, Faxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum) 9g, Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) 6g, Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma) 6g, Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) 9g, Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) 6g, Gaoben (Ligustici Rhizoma et Radix) 6g, Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) 6g, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 3g, Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) 5 slices, Dazao (Jujubae Fructus) 3 pieces.
After taking three doses of the above prescription, the headache completely stopped, and the coating disappeared. Switched to the following prescription:
Chuan Fupian (Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix) 60g, Bei Kouqi (Astragali Radix) 15g, Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) 6g, Tongguan Jili (Tribuli Fructus) 15g.
In this formula, Fupian warms Kidney Yang and warms Kidney Water; the ascent of Kidney Water relies entirely on the steaming of Kidney Qi. Kouqi tonifies Qi and raises Clear Yang; Qianghuo unblocks the Taiyang Qi mechanism and dispels Wind pathogens; Tongguan Jili nourishes Liver and Kidney and brightens the eyes. These four ingredients combined warm Yang, tonify the Kidney, lift sinking, raise Clear Yang, dispel Wind, and brighten the eyes.
After one dose, vision improved. After three consecutive doses, the white pannus receded, and vision returned to normal.
[Note]: Although this case was triggered by emotional factors, combining the findings of the Four Diagnostic Methods and previous prescriptions led to a diagnosis of Kidney Yang Deficiency, cured by tonifying the Kidney and raising Yang. Without careful differentiation, sticking to general conventional methods using Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill), Gouqi Juhua Dihuang Tang (Goji and Chrysanthemum Rehmannia Decoction), or other Yin-nourishing and Fire-descending agents would make recovery difficult. Because the Taiyang meridian originates at the inner canthus of the eye, and the Kidney and Bladder are exterior-interior related, the Kidney is Gui Water, governing warm ascent, while the Bladder is Cold Water, governing cold descent. Due to the misuse of Cold-Cooling agents, the Qi mechanism became stagnant, and ascending/descending functions were abnormal. Further mis-treatment would make the disease hard to cure. This is the rationale for using Warmth instead of Cold in this case, and also the brilliance of using Qianghuo to open the Taiyang Qi mechanism while tonifying the Kidney and raising Yang in these two formulas. Therefore, in treating eye diseases, the method of warming the Kidney and raising Yang cannot be ignored.
Additionally: This formula is also used for Yang Deficiency type Glaucoma, etc.
Two Cases of Cheek Swelling
Case 1: Heat-Toxin Fa Yi (Mumps-like swelling)
Gao XX, Male, 10 years old. Suffering from fever, swelling below both earlobes, and pain. Diagnosed with Mumps by Western medicine, treated with Western drugs for over ten days without relief, requested my consultation. Signs included: difficulty opening mouth, difficulty swallowing, constipation, purple tongue, wiry and rapid pulses in both wrists. Combining pulse and symptoms, it was determined to be infection by Wind-Warmth toxin, with Heat-Toxin congesting in the cheek area, involving the Shaoyang (Lesser Yang) and Yangming (Yang Brightness) meridians. Used Yinhua Gancao Tang (Honeysuckle and Licorice Decoction) with modifications. Prescription:
Jinyinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos) 9g, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 6g, Zicao (Arnebiae Radix) 6g, Heidou (Phaseoli Semen Nigrum) 15g, Lüdou (Phaseoli Semen Aureum) 15g.
This formula is a light and ascending agent, functioning to clear Heat and resolve toxicity, cool Blood and nourish Liver, guiding Heat-Toxin outward to dissipate.
Second visit: After two doses of the above prescription, fever decreased, swelling largely subsided, pain eased, and the mouth could open. Maintained the original prescription, adding Zijhua Diding (Violae Herba) 9g and Xiakucao (Prunellae Spica) 9g to enhance the power of clearing Heat, resolving toxicity, clearing Liver, and dissipating nodules. After two doses, complete recovery occurred.
In this case, Heat is congested in the Yang meridians; it is appropriate to guide the trend and provide cooling dispersion. One must not overuse Bitter-Cold attacking agents to prevent Heat-Toxin from sinking inward and causing other complications.
Case 2: Cold Coagulation Fa Yi
Chen XX, Female, 25 years old, Overseas Chinese returning home. Hospitalized, diagnosed with Mumps, treated with herbs like Xiakucao and Penicillin for a long time without effect. Invited for consultation. Signs included: Although swelling below the left ear, the skin color was not red, felt cool to touch, no desire to drink. Blue and slippery tongue body, deep and slow pulse. This was due to Liver Cold and Wood stagnation, with Yin-Cold pathogens stagnating in the Shaoyang meridian, causing this condition. Prescribed Fengsui Dan (Seal the Marrow Pill) with modifications. Prescription:
Jiao Huangbai (Scutellariae Radix Scorified) 9g, Sharen (Amomi Fructus) 6g, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 6g, Wuyu (Evodiae Fructus) 6g, Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) 6g.
The purpose of this formula is to facilitate communication between Yin and Yang. Huangbai and Gancao, Bitter and Sweet, transform into Yin; Sharen and Gancao, Acrid and Sweet, transform into Yang. Combined with Wuyu and Rougui to warm the Liver, disperse Cold, and resolve coagulation. Thus, Yin and Yang communicate, and the Qi mechanism of Liver and Gallbladder ascends and descends. After two consecutive doses, swelling reduced. Taking the original prescription for another two doses resulted in complete recovery.
[Note]: The above two cases of cheek swelling are called Fa Yi in TCM Surgery. Although the disease name is the same, the pathogenesis differs. The former case had Heat signs such as fever, constipation, purple tongue, and wiry-rapid pulse, judged as a Yang Syndrome, so it was cured by clearing and resolving. The latter case, after long-term treatment with Liver-clearing and anti-inflammatory drugs without success, showed Cold signs such as non-red/non-hot swelling, no desire to drink, blue-slippery tongue, and deep-slow pulse, judged as a Yin Syndrome, and was cured by facilitating Yin-Yang communication and harmonizing Qi mechanism ascent/descent. By analyzing pathogenesis through syndrome differentiation, adopting "treating the same disease with different methods," both cases achieved cure.
Callosity Lip (Jian Chun)
Son of Lin XX, 2 years old, still breastfeeding. Fever with spontaneous sweating, swelling and pain of upper and lower lips, especially severe swelling of the lower lip, continuous spontaneous sweating, inflammation resembling a silkworm cocoon, difficulty feeding, crying day and night. Came from Chuxiong to Kunming for medical treatment. Initially diagnosed with Stomatitis by Western medicine, Western drugs were ineffective, swelling worsened, then sought my consultation. The illness had persisted for over twenty days. Pulse was soft and powerless, tongue was moist. Given that an infant suffers from this condition, Yuan Qi (Original Qi) is already insufficient. At this time, if one neglects securing the root and recklessly administers Cooling and swelling-reducing agents, it will likely promote deterioration. Examining the lip swelling, named "Jian Chun" (Callosity Lip). The fever is Deficient Heat. Spontaneous sweating also belongs to Deficient Defensive Qi failing to secure, leakage of Body Fluids, and floating Yang. *Huangdi Neijing* states: "Spleen Qi connects to the mouth, the flourishing aspect of the Spleen is in the lips." *Yixue Xinwu* (New Insights into Medicine) states regarding this symptom: "Small blisters appear on the lips, gradually swelling larger like a cocoon, caused by Depression-Heat in Heart and Spleen." *Shoushi Baoyuan* (Preserve Life Treasure Source) major principles for treating this symptom state: "Examine the primary disease, observe accompanying syndromes, tonify Spleen Qi, generate Spleen Blood, then dryness naturally moistens, fire naturally removes, wind naturally rests, swelling naturally disappears. If patients ignore it, or physicians fail to examine carefully, recklessly using Heat-clearing and detoxifying drugs, or peeling off the skin with medicinal threads, it may turn into a fatal ulcerated condition." However, most formulas listed in these two books are not suitable for this specific case. Carefully examining this case, initially it belonged to Heart-Spleen Depression-Heat and Stomach Turbidity failing to descend, but simply because timely treatment was not given, or excessive Cooling/Anti-inflammatory agents were taken, leading to long-term consumption of Yuan Qi, reversal of Gallbladder-Stomach Turbid Qi upward, causing the condition to worsen. At this juncture, the treatment method should address both root and branch, seeking to tonify deficiency and transform depression-heat, while also reducing swelling to stop pain. Following Zhang Zhongjing's *Jingui Yaolue* (Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet) for treating Hu Huo (Fox Disease): "If face and eyes suddenly turn black or white, erosion in the upper part causes hoarseness, Ganxiao Xiexin Tang (Licorice and Coptis Decoction to Drain the Epigastric Region) is indicated." Proposed formula:
Zhi Gancao (Honey-fried Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 6g, Chao Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix Stir-fried) 6g, Jiangjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) 6g, Xiyangshen (Panacis Quinquefolii Radix) 6g, Faxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum) 9g, Chuan Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) 2g, Dazao (Jujubae Fructus) 2 pieces.
You Zaijing stated this formula makes "Middle Qi move and Damp-Heat transform." Chen Yuanxi stated "Tonify deficiency and transform Damp-Heat." Xu Dachun stated "Erosion in the throat is 'Huo', meaning Heat flooding upwards." The patient's Callosity Lip is indeed Heat flooding upwards, but the condition has reached a stage showing Deficiency signs. It is appropriate to tonify deficiency and transform Damp-Heat; nothing else fits. In the formula, Xiyangshen tonifies Spleen-Lung deficiency and strengthens Middle Qi to transform Damp-Heat. Huangqin and Huanglian drain Heat; with the warmth of Jiangjiang, though Cold, they do not stagnate; though Jiangjiang is Hot, with the moistening of Shen and Gancao, it does not dry. Odd and Even support each other, and with Faxia descending rebellious Qi, the Heat cleared and descended by Huangqin and Huanglian is guided downward. After one dose of the above prescription, the child became quiet, stopped crying, and slept. Next day, fever subsided, sweating stopped, lip swelling gradually disappeared. Second visit continued with nourishing Stomach Yin for consolidation. Prescription:
Jin Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis) 6g, Gualougen (Trichosanthis Radix) 6g, Shashen (Glehniae Radix) 9g, Yuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix) 9g, Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix) 9g, Jingmi (Oryzae Semen) 15g.
Taking two consecutive doses, lip swelling completely disappeared, and the disease was cured.
Two Cases of Yin-Cold Tongue Pain
Case 1:
Li XX, Male, 30 years old. Suffering from tip-of-tongue pain for two months, long-term treatment unsuccessful. Previous physicians used Huanglian Jiedu Tang (Coptis Decoction to Resolve Toxicity) etc., without effect. Invited me to treat. Observed slippery, moist, saliva-rich tongue, non-red tongue tip, no thirst, no irritability, deep and powerless pulse, clearly indicating a Yin Syndrome. Since the tongue is the sprout of the Heart, if it were a Yang Syndrome, one would expect irritability, red tongue, dry throat, desire for water, and rapid pulse. What is seen now are all signs of insufficiency, yet Huanglian Jiedu Tang was used, essentially "treating Cold with Cold," vainly damaging Stomach Qi. Therefore, based on pulse and symptoms, switched to Si Ni Tang (Frigid Extremities Decoction) to vigorously support Original Yang and achieve success. Prescription:
Fupian (Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix) 60g, Zhi Gancao (Honey-fried Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 6g, Jiangjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) 6g.
After taking, tip-of-tongue pain greatly reduced. Continuing for two doses resulted in cure.
Case 2:
Xie XX, Male, over 30 years old. Suffering from unbearable lip and mouth pain. Previously treated with Heat-clearing and toxicity-resolving agents like Shigao (Gypsum), pain worsened, unable to sleep for a week due to severe pain, transferred to my care. Signs: Blue tongue body, slippery and moist coating, deep and fine pulse, no signs of blazing Evil Fire. The mouth is the orifice of the Spleen, lips are the flourishing aspect of the Spleen. Its pathogenesis lies in excessive Turbid Yin in the Lower Jiao, Yang failing to hide. Yin pathogens diffuse, Cold Water insults Earth, Spleen Earth is constrained, meridians are blocked, reflecting on lips and mouth, forming this condition. Treatment method should rapidly extract Yang and suppress Yin. Prescribed a combination of Si Ni Tang and Bai Tong Tang.
Chuan Fupian (Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix) 30g, Jiangjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) 6g, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 6g, Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) 2 stems.
After three doses, pain greatly reduced, Interior Yang gradually returned.
Second visit: Blue tongue gradually receded, pulse became stronger. Still prescribed Si Ni Tang, changed Chuan Fupian to Yan Fuzi (Salted Aconite), increased dosage to 60g. Prescription:
Yan Fuzi (Salted Aconiti Lateralis Radix) 60g, Jiangjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) 6g, Zhi Gancao (Honey-fried Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 6g.
After one dose of the above prescription, many stools of black water were passed. This is a good sign of Turbid Yin retreating, i.e., Spleen Yang gradually recovering.
Third visit: Lip and mouth swelling had subsided. To consolidate efficacy, Fengsui Dan (Seal the Marrow Pill) was given to facilitate Yin-Yang communication and guide Fire back to its source. After two doses, the disease stabilized.
Mouth Ulceration (Kou Mi)
Xu XX, Female, 35 years old. Suffering from oral ulceration for over a year, long-term treatment unsuccessful, extended to my consultation. Signs: Difficulty swallowing, deeply suffering. Slow pulse, thin white tongue coating, no desire to drink. Syndrome belongs to Spleen Dampness and Stomach Heat. Method should clear Stomach and remove Dampness. Prescription:
Shengma ( Cimicifugae Rhizoma) 6g, Sheng Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) 15g, Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) 6g, Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) 3g, Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) 6g.
In the formula, Shengma raises Yang and disperses Turbid pathogens; it is a herb of the Yangming Stomach meridian, *Ben Cao Jing* states it "treats sore throat and mouth ulcers," Wang Haogu stated it can treat rotten tooth roots and foul odor. Shigao clears Excess Heat in Lung and Stomach; Bohe clears floating rising Heat, able to dissipate Upper Jiao Wind-Heat. Xixin has acrid fragrance, ascending nature, can unblock and benefit various orifices in the Upper Jiao, and can restrain the Cold of Shigao. With Bohe as assistant, Shigao's power to clear Dry-Heat in the Stomach meridian is stronger. Huangbai guides Damp-Heat downward out of the Bladder. Also: "Bitterness of Qin and Lian can transform dryness; although Huangbai is bitter, it is not easy to transform dryness, but can transform dampness." Shengma, Xixin, and Bohe in the formula all have ascending properties. The patient's oral ulceration occurs in the upper part; cooperating together, Exterior and Interior Heat are both cleared, allowing drug effects to manifest in the upper part.
Gargle Formula: Qiangweihua Gen (Root of Rosa rugosa) 15g, soaked in boiling water, wait until cool, gargle frequently.
External Treatment Formula: Wuyu (Evodiae Fructus) 6g, Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) 3g, grind both medicines into powder, mix with vinegar, apply to Yongquan (KI1) acupoints on both soles.
Qiangweihua Gen is Bitter, Neutral, Non-toxic, has the function of removing Damp-Heat. Soaking in water for gargling effectively treats mouth ulceration. Wuyu and Huanglian form Zuojin Wan (Left Metal Pill), which can soothe Liver and clear Fire, and harmonize Stomach. The two combined, one Hot and one Cold, mutually assist, treating upper disease by taking lower points, achieving great success.
The patient took only one dose of the above internal prescription, gargled according to method, and applied externally to Yongquan on soles, causing oral ulceration lasting over a year to gradually subside and not recur.
Facial Carbuncles and Furuncles
Xiong Wen XX, Male, 30 years old. Suffering from itching and slight pain of facial carbuncles/furuncles, sometimes oozing fluid, persisting for over a year, repeatedly treated without cure. Observing the carbuncles/furuncles were pinkish, swollen but not protruding high, with local skin ulceration points. Pulse was wiry and fine, tongue red without coating. This is due to insufficiency of Qi and Blood, and Heat stagnation in the Lung meridian. If purely using Heat-clearing and toxicity-resolving agents, not only would it be useless, but it would also vainly damage Healthy Qi. Since the carbuncles/furuncles have been ulcerated for a long time, Qi and Blood are depleted, Ying-Blood is insufficient, unable to push toxins outward. Added Wind-Heat battling, blood circulation obstructed, stagnating under facial skin, developing into carbuncles/furuncles, thus persisting long without cure. Currently, should administer agents for tonifying Qi and Blood, invigorating Blood and dispelling Wind, clearing Heat and resolving toxicity, dissipating nodules and reducing swelling. Use Da Gui Tang (Great Return Decoction) plus Fangfeng. Prescription:
Sheng Kouqi (Raw Astragali Radix) 15g, Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 9g, Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma) 6g, Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) 9g, Jinyinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos) 15g, Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) 9g, Pugongying (Taraxaci Herba) 15g, Sheng Gancao (Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 9g (add a little wine as guide).
In the formula, Kouqi and Danggui tonify Qi and nourish Blood; Chuanxiong invigorates Blood and moves Qi; combined with Fangfeng to dispel Wind and stop pain. The combination of Qi, Gui, Xiong, and Fang makes Qi and Blood vigorous, pushing toxins outward. Jinyinhua is Sweet and Cold, fragrant, able to clear and penetrate to vent the exterior, and resolve Blood-level Heat-Toxin. Lianqiao is Cool and Bitter, light and clear ascending, can treat various Heat in Upper Jiao, especially able to resolve toxicity, eliminate abscesses, and dissipate nodules. Pugongying clears Heat and resolves toxicity, reduces swelling and dissipates nodules; Raw Gancao can resolve carbuncle swelling and toxicity, and harmonize various drugs. Adding wine to this formula promotes Qi and Blood flow, assisting various drugs in pushing toxins outward.
Taking five consecutive doses, carbuncles/furuncles gradually subsided, itching and pain stopped, ulcerated areas formed scabs. Tongue red turned pale, pulse became harmonious and slow. To consolidate efficacy, switched to agents for tonifying Lung and benefiting Qi, strengthening Heart and generating Blood, using Paojiang Gancao Tang (Roasted Ginger and Licorice Decoction) with modifications:
Paojiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Preparatum) 15g, Sheng Gancao (Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 9g, Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) 9g, Baimi (Mel) (one spoonful mixed in each time).
Why use this for sores and ulcers? *Huangdi Neijing* states: "All pain, itching, and sores belong to the Heart." Because the Heart governs Blood and connects to vessels, Lung governs Qi and connects to skin and hair. If Lung Qi is deficient, regulatory authority is lost; if Zong Qi (Gathering Qi) is insufficient, the function of promoting blood circulation decreases, leading to poor blood circulation, making recurrence of furuncles/swelling possible. Therefore, in the formula, Paojiang warms Yang and unblocks vessels, paired with Gancao Bitter-Sweet transforming Yin to generate Blood; Wuweizi tonifies Heart, astringes Lung, benefits Qi; Baimi moistens Lung, tonifies Middle, and resolves toxicity. The whole formula works synergistically, tonifying Lung and benefiting Qi to promote vigorous blood flow; with smooth Qi and Blood flow, one can naturally avoid the fear of furuncle recurrence. Thus, after five consecutive doses, scabs fell off completely and healed, and to date, no recurrence has been seen.
