Cough accompanied by abundant clear nasal discharge is caused by the Lung affected by Wind-Cold; Huagai San (Hua Gai Powder) is the primary formula. If external contraction of Wind-Cold and internal injury from cold/raw food cause stagnation in the chest and diaphragm, with coughing and vomiting, Wuge San (Wu Ge Powder) is indicated. Cough with irritability belongs to the Kidney; Shigao Wan (Gypsum Pill) is indicated. Generally, patients with cough must avoid cooling medicines; violating this will inevitably lead to other complications. Sexual intercourse must be avoided to prevent transformation into Consumption (Xu Lao). Chronic cough with sweating on the forehead, or occasional slight coldness in the four limbs, intermittent fever, and fatigue indicates Labor Cough (Lao Ke). Immediate moxibustion at Guanyuan (CV-4) for 300 moxa cones, along with administration of Jinye Dan (Golden Fluid Pill), Baoming Dan (Life-Preserving Pill), and Jiangfu Tang (Ginger and Aconite Decoction) is required. Early treatment is essential; delay makes it difficult to save. (Regarding the treatment of cough, if one follows the Master's principle of adapting treatment to specific symptoms, there would be no incurable cases of Consumption. However, physicians often erroneously use Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Zhimu (Anemarrhena Rhizome), Sangbaipi (Mulberry Root Bark), and Xingren (Apricot Seed) as key drugs, causing Lung Qi to be frozen and stagnant, and Spleen-Kidney Qi to fail. When later attempts are made to tonify, only mild formulas such as Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) and Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) are used, which essentially "nourishes them to death.")
This condition is named Asthma in medical texts. It arises from cold weather, drinking cold water, or excessive salt intake, which injures Lung Qi. Consequently, the throat often produces a sound like wind roaring, and exertion leads to panting and chest fullness. Moxibustion at Tiantu (CV-22) for 50 cones is required; for severe cases, add Zhongwan (CV-12) for 50 cones. Administer Wuge San (Wu Ge Powder), or grind two earthworms and take them mixed with vinegar for immediate cure. (Asthma attacks when exposed to cold and worsens with exertion. With proper diagnosis and treatment, recovery is not difficult, though few achieve a permanent cure. The Master's method is excellent; please try it.)
Excessive sexual desire or excessive consumption of cold foods damages the Qi of the Spleen and Lung, leading to hemoptysis (coughing up blood). Take Zhongru Fen (Zeolite Powder) and Jinye Dan (Golden Fluid Pill) before meals, and Ejiao San (Donkey-Hide Gelatin Powder) after meals to recover. In elderly individuals, excessive wine and sex damage Spleen Qi, leading to hematemesis (vomiting blood); damage to Kidney Qi leads to hematochezia (blood in stool). Without early treatment, death is likely. Moxibustion at Guanyuan (CV-4) for 300 cones, combined with Jiangfu Tang (Ginger and Aconite Decoction) and Jinye Dan (Golden Fluid Pill), can lead to self-recovery. Injury to Lung Qi causes blood to flow from the nose, termed Feinu (Lung Epistaxis), due to Heat attacking upward from the Upper Jiao. Take Jinye Dan (Golden Fluid Pill), hold cold water in the mouth, or apply Yujin powder (Curcuma Radix powder) mixed with liquid to the back of the neck and the bridge of the nose. Generally, Feinu (Lung Epistaxis) involves only a few cups of blood; if bleeding reaches a sheng or dou volume, it is Noulou (Brain Leakage), which should correctly be called Naonu (Brain Epistaxis). This occurs because True Qi is deficient, causing blood to move recklessly. Immediately needle Guanyuan (CV-4) to a depth of three cun, retain for twenty hu breaths to stop bleeding immediately, then moxa Guanyuan (CV-4) for 200 cones, and administer Jinye Dan (Golden Fluid Pill) and Caoshen Dan (Grass Spirit Pill) to ensure survival. (Bleeding disorders are feared by the public, and many physicians shrink from treating them. They fear rapid death and the easy progression to Consumption. Their hesitation stems from ignorance of the root cause and difficulty in restoring the body. One must investigate the root, examine the cause, observe the complexion, and differentiate the pulse. Causes may include physical labor or emotional excess. External contractions are easier to treat; internal injuries are harder to cure. Collateral vessels differ from meridians; meridians are heavy/deep while collaterals are light/superficial. Liver-Spleen differs from Lung-Kidney; Lung-Kidney is difficult while Liver-Spleen is easier. If the treatment method is not erroneous, even severe cases can be reversed. The key lies in differentiating Yin and Yang, weighing Deficiency and Excess, and appropriately applying warming, clearing, tonifying, and reducing methods. Do not fear heat flames and rely solely on cold/cooling herbs, gradually destroying vital Qi, leading to untreatable situations, which are common.)
Clinical Case:
One patient suffered from Brain Epistaxis (Naonu), bleeding several sheng daily, with all medicines ineffective. I needled Guanyuan (CV-4), inserted two cun deep, retained for twenty hu breaths, and asked the patient: "Do you feel heat under the needle?" He replied: "Yes, hot." I instructed him to inhale deeply upon withdrawing the needle, and the bleeding stopped immediately.
Another divine prescription for Nose Epistaxis and Brain Epistaxis: Forge a ring from red gold, wear it on the left ring finger. Upon onset, tighten the ring with the right hand; constriction stops the bleeding.
