The *Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon* states: The center corresponds to the color yellow, its qi connects with the Spleen, and it opens into the mouth. It also states: The Spleen's qi communicates with the mouth; when the Spleen is harmonious, the mouth can perceive the five flavors.
Chen Feixia said: The mouth is the external manifestation of the Spleen. "Goose-mouth" (Equeous Mouth) refers to white, greasy coating filling the oral cavity and covering the tongue, resembling a goose's beak. This is caused by Lung heat exacerbated by Heart and Spleen heat, hence manifesting in the mouth. Internally administer Hangxie Dan, and externally apply Baoming San as a powder insufflation.
Mouth sores refer to redness and ulceration throughout the mouth. This occurs due to strong prenatal endowment and excessive warmth during upbringing, leading to accumulated heat in the Heart and Spleen. This heat steams upward, resulting in mouth sores. Internally administer Hangxie Dan, and externally apply water made from grinding Di Ji (ground beetles, commonly found under bricks at home) onto the sores.
Oral thrush (Kou Mi) refers to ulcers and erosion throughout the mouth. This results from Heat transferring from the Bladder to the Small Intestine, causing obstruction in the diaphragm and intestines, with Heat rising to form oral thrush. Use Daochi San to clear Heat from the Small Intestine, and Wuling San to clear Heat from the Bladder; these two formulas should be taken together.
If mouth sores do not respond to cooling medicines, it is due to deficiency of Qi in the Liver and Spleen, allowing deficient Fire to float upward without restraint. Use Lizhong Tang to gather the floating Fire, and externally insufflate Shanggui (Cinnamon Twig) powder. If sores appear in the mouth after vomiting or diarrhea, this is also due to deficient Fire; use Lizhong Tang. Ignorant practitioners assume all mouth sores are excess Heat and indiscriminately use cold-natured herbs, which will certainly fail to save the patient. If there is swelling above resembling a hanging abscess, this is called "Double Tongue" (Chong She). This is formed by Spleen and Stomach carrying Heat, preventing Qi and Blood from converging. Puncture with a needle to release evil blood, internally administer Hangxie Dan, and externally apply Biyun San as insufflation.
When infants drool from both cheeks, soaking the chest, this is called "Stagnant Saliva" (Zhi Yi). Saliva is the fluid of the Spleen, and the mouth is the orifice of the Spleen. Due to deficiency-cold of the Spleen and Stomach, fluids cannot be contained, so saliva flows from the mouth and stagnates in the cheeks. Use Wenpi Dan.
Frequent puckering of the lips in infants indicates disharmony of Qi. The lips correspond to the Spleen, and Qi originates from the Lung. Spleen deficiency fails to generate Lung Qi, causing frequent lip puckering. Use Yigong San or Bupi San; tonifying the Spleen to generate Lung Qi will cure it. If an infant pucks their mouth, has a blue-green face, cries frequently, this indicates extreme Yin Cold, deficiency-cold of the Liver and Spleen, and pain below the umbilicus. Warm with Lizhong Tang.
If an infant urgently desires to suckle milk but cannot, it is due to Heat in the Heart and Spleen, causing the tongue to be immobile. Clear with Xiehuang Tang.

Fuling (Poria), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Zhiren (Gardenia Seed), Yinchenhao (Artemisia Capillaris), Zexie (Alisma Rhizome) (each 1 qian), Dengxincao (Juncus Effusus) (10 stems)
Decoct in water and take orally.
Tu Weisheng commented: Chen Feixia's statement that Wuling San removes Bladder Heat is somewhat erroneous. Wuling San is inherently warm/hot in nature, serving as a medicine to warm-transform congealed cold-water. Its ability to remove cold is because water stagnates in the Middle Jiao, causing the Bladder to lose its Fire-Qi transformation function, failing to transform Qi and ascend. Consequently, body fluids disperse widely, leading to thirst, fever, chest irritability, etc. Now, Fuling and Zexie promote urination downward, while Guizhi transforms water upward, allowing Wei Qi to ascend and body fluids to reach. Thus, true cold is removed, and false heat dissipates. To treat Bladder Fire-Heat with this formula would be akin to using Xiaoshi (Mirabilite) and Dahuang (Rhubarb) to treat Yangming Cold-Constipation. So, how should Bladder Heat truly be removed? The answer is: Remove Guizhi from Wuling San and add Zhimu (Anemarrhena Rhizome), Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Mutong (Akebia Stem), etc., and only then is it suitable.
