Xu Sibai stated: The disease of wind-xuan (wind vertigo) originates from deficiency of heart qi, with heat accumulating above the chest. Real phlegm and heat interact to stir wind. When wind and heart qi mix, it causes stifling and dizziness. Hence it is called wind-xuan-mao. In adults, it is called dian; in children, it is called xian. This formula treats it, and there is no case that does not heal. In emergencies, simply measure the acupoints and needle them with large needles; all will recover. It is best to needle immediately upon onset and then moxa. Since I engaged in this profession, over thirty years, I have saved thousands. Those who died were those who did not encounter me. (Xuming Tang mainly treats vertigo attacks with sudden stupor and unconsciousness. Foaming and bleeding from the mouth. Body in opisthotonos, eyes turned up. Jaw clenched, unable to speak. Bamboo sap 1 sheng 2 he, fresh Rehmannia juice 1 sheng, Longchi powder, Shengjiang, Fangfeng, Mahuang de-segmented each 4 liang, Fangji, Pao Fuzi 3 liang, Shigao 10 liang, Guizhi 2 liang. These ten ingredients, boil in 1 dou of water to obtain 3 sheng, divide into three doses. If there is qi stagnation, add Fuzi 1 liang, Zisu 5 he, Jupi half liang.) His discussion on wind-xuan and epilepsy is very reasonable, so I attach his formula here. (There is also Jingchun Tang detailed in Qianjin Fang). However, pediatric xian disease is not solely due to heart qi deficiency. Qianjin Fang lists three types: wind-xian, food-xian, and fright-xian. Benshi Fang lists three syndromes: yin-dian, man-pi-feng, and yang-dian (Man-pi-feng is food-xian, suitable for Xingpi Chong Renshen San). Ancient formulas include Sanxian Wan to treat 120 types of pediatric fright-xian (Jingjie Sui 1 liang, Fan 1.5 liang, processed until half raw half dry, powdered, pill with wheat paste, size of millet seeds, coated with Zhusha, take 20 pills with ginger decoction). I believe Man-jing (slow convulsion) should use Laifu Dan, Ji-jing (fast convulsion) should use Sanxian Wan, and Shi-xian (food epilepsy) should use Xingpi Wan.
Treats dian-ji and Ma-xian. Acupoints: Jinmen (BL63), Pucan (BL64)
Treats Wu-ban-xian of the eyes. Headache and nasal congestion. Acupoint: Meichong (EX-HN3)
Treats wind-xian. Heat disease. Xin-feng. Palpitations. Huoluan vomiting and dysentery. Fulou (accumulation under diaphragm). Qi surging like an inverted cup. Acupoints: Shangwan (CV13) [1 point], Sanli (ST36) [2 points]
When moxa for xian disease, one must first apply reducing methods to empty the pathogen, then moxa while the pathogen is deficient. There is never moxa applied to excess conditions. If qi forces blockage front and back, it kills. If the body is not very hot and the heart/abdomen is not distended, moxa can be applied. If there is high fever and fullness, one must first reduce (purge) before moxa.
