Chapter: Chuan Shi Lei Shou (With Discussion) - Consumption and Emaciation due to Transmitted Corpse Disease
Category: Formulas
[English Translation]
The symptoms of "Chuan Shi" (Transmitted Corpse Disease/Consumption) in both men and women include fullness and oppression in the chest and heart, soreness and pain in the back and shoulders, dryness and astringency in the eyes, weakness in the four limbs, a constant desire to lie down, and restless sleep with difficulty falling asleep. There is stiffness and pain in the spine and loins, soreness in the knees and shins, spending more time lying down than standing up, and a posture resembling that of a hunchback or someone feigning illness. The condition typically presents with relatively good spirit upon waking in the morning, as if asymptomatic; however, from noon onwards, there is slight heat in the four limbs, an abnormal ruddy complexion, a tendency to find fault with others, frequent anger, weakness in walking and standing, night sweats during sleep, dreams of sexual intercourse with spirits, visions of deceased relatives, palpitations, occasional shortness of breath, and coughing. Although there may be an appetite, food intake is low, life hangs by a thread, yet the spirit appears robust. Some patients exhibit distension in the hypochondrium, occasional mild diarrhea, dry nose and mouth, sticky saliva, red lips, and a desire to expectorate. Gradually, the body becomes emaciated and weak due to the depletion of Yin fluids, which fail to nourish the five Zang organs, leading to severe wasting and eventual death. After death, the disease may transmit to another family member, hence the name "Chuan Shi" (Transmitted Corpse), also known as "Chuan Zhu". Because early on, patients are half-lying and half-sitting, it is referred to as [missing term]. When accompanied by shortness of breath and cough, it is called "Fei Wei" (Lung Withering); when there is heat in the bone marrow, it is called "Gu Zheng" (Bone Steaming); when the pathogen transmits internally to the five Zang organs, it is called "Fu Lian" (Hidden Connection). If left untreated suddenly, it can lead to the extinction of one's lineage.
If a man contracts this disease due to deficiency and damage, it is named "Lao Ji" (Extreme Exhaustion). The origin begins in the Kidney. Initially, the Kidney is affected, causing soreness in the lower legs, stiffness in the waist and spine, weakness in walking, reduced appetite, buzzing sounds in the ears resembling wind, nocturnal emissions, sweating in the genital area, and atrophy/weakness of the genitals. After the Kidney is affected, the pathogen transmits to the Heart. The Heart being affected causes fright during sleep, timidity, palpitations, a sensation of the heart hanging empty, weak breathing, dreams of deceased relatives, night sweats, loss of taste, oral ulcers, a strong desire to sleep, symptoms that are lighter in the morning and heavier in the evening, ruddy cheeks and lips like rouge, and heat in the five centers (palms, soles, and chest). If the Heart disease persists, it transmits to the Lung. The Lung being affected causes chest fullness and coughing, physical weakness, occasional asthma/wheezing that worsens when lying down, dry nose and mouth, anosmia, or a sense of smell only for rotten odors, nausea, retching, dry skin, stabbing pains feeling like insects crawling, and wrinkled, dry skin resembling tree bark. After the Lung is affected, it transmits to the Liver. The Liver initially affected causes blurred vision, lack of luster in the face, frequent frowning, inability to see far, dry and astringent eyes, abdominal pain, red or yellow eyes, drowsiness day and night, desires for food and sleep but inability to sleep when lying down. After the Lung and Liver are affected, it transmits to the Spleen. The Spleen initially affected causes distension in the hypochondrium, indigestion, thirst and diarrhea, immediate evacuation after eating, abdominal pain and distension with borborygmus, bitter and dry cracked lips, oral ulcers, dry hair lacking luster, dyspnea with shoulder lifting, and passage of dark red/black stool. This stage indicates impending death.
