Suwen (Plain Questions) and Zhenjing (Classic of Acupuncture) share the same methods for pulse diagnosis. One takes the Cun Kou (Cun Kou, Pulse Location at the Radial Artery) on the right hand, also known as Qi Kou (Qi Kou, Air Port). Qi Kou corresponds to the Lung organ. It belongs to Heaven (the upper aspect), because all twelve meridians converge upon the Lung.
The diagnostic method in Nanjing (Classic of Difficult Issues) posits that the pulse rises from Earth to merge with Heaven. How do we know this? It begins in Spring and ends in Winter, corresponding to the four pulse methods: Xian (String-like), Hong (Surging), Mao (Feather-like), and Shi (Stone-like). These correspond respectively to: 1. Shaoyang (Lesser Yang), 2. Yangming (Greater Yang), 3. Taiyang (Greater Yin), 4. Taiyin (Lesser Yin), 5. Shaoyin (Lesser Yin), 6. Jueyin (Terminal Yin).
It is further stated that the pulse on the left hand travels through the Yang pathways, while the pulse on the right hand travels through the Yin pathways. The pulse is differentiated into Exterior/Interior, Excess, and Deficiency.
Zhang Zhongjing’s (Zhang Zhongjing, Physician) diagnostic method for Shanghan (Cold Damage Disease) proceeds from the exterior to the interior, starting with the Left Cun position.
1. Foot-Taiyang Cold Water, 2. Foot-Yangming Dry Metal, 3. Foot-Shaoyang Ministerial Fire, 4. Foot-Taiyin Damp Earth, 5. Foot-Shaoyin Hot Water, 6. Foot-Jueyin Wind Wood.
These above six meridians are all the Foot meridians. In the North, they belong to Cold Water; in the East, to Wind; located at the Xu and Chou positions. Thus, it begins with Shanghan (Cold Damage Disease). Diseases manifesting in Spring are called Wenbing (Warm Disease).
Wang Shuhe’s (Wang Shuhe, Physician) Maijue (Pulse Mantra) states that if the Left pulse reverses against the Heavenly degrees, it indicates disease. Therefore, the Rushi Ge (Song of Entering the Formula) says: "Left: Heart, Small Intestine, Liver, Gallbladder, Kidney; Right: Lung, Large Intestine, Spleen, Stomach, Mingmen."
Illustrated Diagram of Maijue Rushi:
Left Heart, Small Intestine, Liver, Gallbladder, Kidney.
The Left Cun arterial pulse governs, appearing Hong (Surging). This is the Hand-Shaoyin Heart meridian.
The Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine meridian.
The Left Guan arterial pulse governs, appearing Xian (String-like). This is the Foot-Jueyin Liver meridian.
The Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder meridian.
The Left Chi arterial pulse governs, appearing Chen Xi (Deep and Fine). This is the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney meridian.
Right Lung, Large Intestine, Spleen, Stomach, Mingmen.
The Right Cun arterial pulse governs, appearing Se (Choppy). This is the Hand-Taiyin Lung meridian.
The Hand-Yangming Large Intestine meridian.
The Right Guan arterial pulse governs, appearing Huan (Lax). This is the Foot-Taiyin Spleen meridian.
The Foot-Yangming Stomach meridian.
The Right Chi arterial pulse governs, appearing Hong Shu (Surging and Rapid). This is the Hand-Jueyin Pericardium meridian.
The Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Ministerial Fire meridian.
Cun Position:
Left: Heart, Small Intestine.
Right: Lung, Large Intestine.
Guan Position:
Left: Liver, Gallbladder.
Right: Spleen, Stomach.
Chi Position:
Left: Kidney, Bladder.
Right: Pericardium, Sanjiao.
If the Chi pulse is vigorous indicating disease, the Cun is Yang, borrowed to speak of men; the Guan and Chi are Yin, borrowed to speak of women. If stating there is no disease, the Cun resembles a Yin pulse; when women reach this point, the Cun pulse is weak, and this description is considered compliant/harmonious.
If the Chi pulse is weak indicating disease, the Cun is Yang, borrowed to speak of men; the Guan and Chi are Yin, borrowed to speak of women. If stating there is no disease, the Chi resembles a Yang pulse; when men reach this point, the Cun pulse is vigorous, and this description is considered compliant/harmonious.
In Spring and Summer, Yang backs upward, Yin embraces downward. Spring and Summer back Yang and embrace Yin; Spring rising and Summer floating are compliant. If Spring and Summer do not rise and float but instead reverse, it is non-compliant.
In Autumn and Winter, Yin backs upward, Yang embraces downward. Autumn and Winter back Yin and embrace Yang; Autumn descending and Winter sinking are compliant. If Autumn and Winter do not descend and sink but instead reverse, it is non-compliant.
Left Cun, Guan, Chi: Left Chi belongs to Kidney Water (the governed organs differ).
Right Cun, Guan, Chi: Right Chi belongs to Ministerial Fire (the pathology is the same).
Men are called the Official of Strength and Vigor; Women are called the Official of Skill and Technique. Men internally may form Seven Types of Hernia (Qishen); women may suffer from Leukorrhea (Daixia) and Masses/Growths (Jiaju).
Nanjing Chapter 36 states: Each Zang organ has one, yet the Kidneys alone have two. Why? The answer is: The two kidneys are not both Kidneys.
The left one is the Kidney; the right one is the Mingmen (Gate of Life).
Mingmen is where the Spirit resides and where Yuanqi (Original Qi) is anchored. In men, it stores Essence (Jing); in women, it anchors the Bao (Uterus). Hence, there are two kidneys. Jiegu (Zhang Yuansu, courtesy name Jiegu) said: Men...
