The main manifestations of Shaoyin disease are: the pulse is faint and fine, and there is a desire to sleep with mental lethargy.
Shaoyin disease presents with a desire to vomit but inability to do so, irritability, and a desire to sleep. After five or six days, if spontaneous diarrhea accompanied by thirst occurs, it belongs to Shaoyin disease. This is due to internal deficiency and cold, leading to a desire for water to self-rescue.
If the pulse is tight in both Yin and Yang positions, yet sweating occurs, this indicates the loss of Yang Qi and belongs to Shaoyin disease. According to the progression, throat pain should occur, accompanied by vomiting and diarrhea.
In Shaoyin disease, if coughing is accompanied by diarrhea and delirium, it is caused by forced sweating through fire therapy. Urination will certainly be difficult, resulting from forcibly inducing sweat in Shaoyin disease.
In Shaoyin disease, if the pulse is fine, deep, and rapid, the disease is in the interior, and sweating methods should not be used.
In Shaoyin disease, if the pulse is faint, sweating should not be induced, as this would lead to the loss of Yang Qi. If Yang is already deficient and the Chi (cun-guan-chi) pulse is weak and choppy, purgative methods should also not be used.
In Shaoyin disease, if the pulse is tight, and after seven or eight days spontaneous diarrhea occurs, the pulse suddenly becomes faint, the hands and feet become warm, and the tightness of the pulse disappears, this indicates that the disease is about to resolve. Although there may still be irritability and diarrhea, this is a sign of recovering Zheng Qi (Upright Qi).
In Shaoyin disease, if diarrhea occurs and then stops spontaneously, the patient feels aversion to cold and curls up, but the hands and feet remain warm, the condition is treatable.
In Shaoyin disease, if there is aversion to cold and curling up of the body, occasional irritability, and a desire to remove clothing and bedding, the condition is treatable.
In Shaoyin wind-strike, if the Cun (inch) pulse is faint and the Chi (cubit) pulse is floating, it indicates that the disease is about to heal.
Shaoyin disease tends to resolve during the hours of Zi to Yin (11:00 PM to 5:00 AM).
In Shaoyin disease, if vomiting and diarrhea occur, the hands and feet are not cold, and there is fever, death is unlikely. If the pulse cannot be felt, moxibustion on Shaoyin acupoints for seven moxa cones is indicated.
In Shaoyin disease, after eight or nine days, if the whole body and hands and feet become hot, it is because heat is in the Bladder; hematochezia (blood in stool) will surely occur.
In Shaoyin disease, if there is only cold extremities without sweat, and sweating is forcibly induced, bleeding will surely occur. The source of bleeding is unknown; it may come from the mouth or nose, or from the eyes. This is called "Lower Jue and Upper Exhaustion" and is difficult to treat.
In Shaoyin disease, if there is aversion to cold, curling up of the body, diarrhea, and cold extremities, it is considered incurable.
In Shaoyin disease, if there is vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, irritability, and cold extremities, the prognosis is poor, indicating a fatal condition.
In Shaoyin disease, if diarrhea stops but dizziness and vertigo occur, with frequent sensations of head heaviness or blackout, the prognosis is poor, indicating a fatal condition.
In Shaoyin disease, if there are cold extremities, aversion to cold, curling up of the body, an imperceptible pulse, no irritability but restlessness, the prognosis is poor, indicating a fatal condition.
In Shaoyin disease, after six or seven days, if breathing is shallow and rapid (high respiration), the prognosis is poor, indicating a fatal condition.
In Shaoyin disease, if the pulse is faint, fine, and deep, there is a desire to sleep, sweating occurs without irritability, and there is a desire to vomit; by the fifth or sixth day, spontaneous diarrhea occurs, followed by recurrent irritability and insomnia, the prognosis is poor, indicating a fatal condition.
In Shaoyin disease, at the onset, if there is contrary fever and a deep pulse, Ma Huang Fu Zi Xi Xin Tang (Ephedra, Aconite, and Asarum Decoction) is the primary treatment.
Ma Huang Fu Zi Xi Xin Tang Formula:
Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba, 2 liang, nodes removed, sweet and hot), Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, 2 liang, pungent and hot), Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, 1 piece, processed, skin removed, broken into 8 pieces, pungent and hot).
In Shaoyin disease, after two or three days, Ma Huang Fu Zi Gan Cao Tang (Ephedra, Aconite, and Licorice Decoction) is used to induce mild sweating. Since there are no interior symptoms within two or three days, only mild sweating is induced.
Ma Huang Fu Zi Gan Cao Tang Formula:
Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba, 2 liang, nodes removed), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 2 liang, honey-fried), Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, 1 piece, processed, skin removed).
In Shaoyin disease, after two or three days or more, if there is central irritability and inability to sleep, Huang Lian E Jiao Tang (Coptis and Donkey-hide Gelatin Decoction) is the primary treatment.
Huang Lian E Jiao Tang Formula:
Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 4 liang, bitter and cold), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, 1 liang, bitter and cold), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 2 liang, sour and neutral), Ji Zi Huang (Yolk of Gallus Domesticus Egg, 2 pieces, sweet and warm), E Jiao (Colla Corii Asini, 3 liang, sweet and warm).
