The *Huangdi Neijing* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon) states: "When blood is excessive, it should be drained." The *Nan Jing* (Classic of Difficult Issues) states: "Swelling and heat should be treated with Bian stone puncture." This is because pathogenic toxins are aggregated, the condition is vigorous and substantial, and medicinal power alone cannot eliminate it.
Treatment Methods
For conditions thus formed, treatment should first employ hooks, knives, or scythes to wash away toxic vapors, followed by decoctions or powders, and then application of ointments for spot-dressing.
Whenever there are red vessels and polyps at the head of both eyes, it is appropriate to hook them up and cut them off completely using a Pi needle (a flat surgical knife). If not completely removed, continue cutting until they are entirely gone, taking this as the standard. Alternatively, use fine sewing needles.
Whenever the upper part of the eye is swollen, and the eyelid skin contains a nodule like a rice grain that gradually enlarges to the size of a plum, containing internal matter resembling pus or peach gum, these are all caused by Wind-Heat.
Whenever Wind-toxic Heat swelling aggregates inside the inner aspects of both eyelids, causing obstruction and pain for a long time and gradually increasing, often secretly damaging the pupil, it is appropriate to use a needle-knife to cut it off for recovery.
There are also cases where Spleen-Wind-Heat congestion attacks the eyelids, causing unceasing heat and pain; or cases where eyelids swell shut. It is appropriate to turn up the eyelids and inspect the upper and lower areas of the black cornea for Yellow翳 (yellow nebula).
There is also Wind-Yan syndrome, where toxic vapors remain at the edge of the lower eyelid lip. Because the eyelid lip is hollow and curled, encountering Liver and Lung Heat causes aggregation according to previous patterns. It is appropriate to use needles to remove the condensed pus.
There are also cases of red, swollen, and hard eyes with tears making opening difficult, and unbearable pain. Starting in one eye, it then affects the other, gradually generating nebulae membranes so that vision is lost. These are all due to Diaphragm [heat/pathogen]...
Whenever the eyes are red, accompanied by sudden appearance of yellow qi rising from below upwards in the black cornea, with pain, this is caused by Stomach and Spleen Heat-Toxic Vapors steaming and attacking each other. In such cases, it is appropriate to first use a scythe on the upper and lower eyelids.
Whenever stubborn nebulae grow in the eyes, burnt copper needles can be used to gently point/strike, applying Persian silver mine mineral named Xilan Zhi (Silicate/Glass-like substance) for spotting. It will not hurt; do not use other methods.
Whenever yellow membranes appear in the eyes, covering the pupil directly upwards, upon initial onset, there is pain, redness, and dryness, with intermittent episodes, tears making opening difficult, and gradual generation of nebulae membranes.
Whenever the eyes suddenly become red and dry, with tearing, pain, and itching, gradually generating visual obstructions, with red membranes drooping down and covering the eyeball directly, resembling the color of morning clouds, urgent scything and washing are appropriate.
Whenever gelatinous coagulation occurs inside the eyelids, it is due to accumulated Heat in the Stomach and Spleen, with Wind from the Diaphragm rushing into the eyelids. Initially like hemp seeds, over time accumulating and growing, shaped like peaches or plums, causing friction and hidden pain.
Whenever Wind pulls the eyelids, upon initial onset, symptoms fluctuate between good and bad, with intermittent episodes and continuous tearing. This is due to Stomach Qi receiving Wind and accumulated Heat in the Liver and Diaphragm.
Whenever Wind-Millet grows on the eyelids, it is due to congestion and toxicity in the Heart and Lungs, and Wind in the Liver House, causing flesh like millet grains on the upper and lower eyelid skins, with tearing, dryness, and pain, eventually generating nebulae membranes.
Whenever eye pain feels like needle pricking, upon initial onset, there is slight headache and dizziness, tension in the eye system, night-time dryness and pain, and tearing making opening difficult. Over time, it develops into painful bleeding.
Whenever the eye is suddenly struck by an object causing the eyeball to protrude, but the ocular ligament remains intact, it should be immediately placed back into the eyelid, avoiding shock or touch. Apply Si Pan Mo Feng Gao (Four-Sides Rubbing Wind Ointment) and crushed fresh Sheng Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix).
Formulas
Medicines for use after hooking, cutting, and scything with knives and scissors.
Anzalu (Huigui medicine name), Lv Dou Fen (Mung Bean Powder), Sha Tang Shuang (Sugar Frost), Li Zi Shu Jiao (Plum Tree Gum) (each 1 liang). Grind all into powder. Use a small amount to spot on the sore each time.
Formula for treating White Membrane Covering the Pupil.
Cut off chicken feathers. Near the black cornea and directly opposite the white sclera, suck/pull it. The membrane will naturally gather. Hook and pull with a hook needle, cut it off, and vision will return. Place cotton over the eye to stop bleeding.
