The eyes are the organs through which Liver Qi (Liver energy) communicates. They are also the sites where Yin and Yang energies converge. If Wind Pathogen (Wind evil) and toxic vapors remain within the Zang-Fu organs, accumulating over time without dissipating, they will transmit to the Liver. When the Liver is invaded by Wind Pathogens, it causes stagnation in the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner), which then attacks the eyes. The manifestations include redness and swelling of the eyelids, unbearable itching and stifling sensation, a feeling of foreign body with photophobia (aversion to light), alternating discharge of eye discharge (discharge from the eyes) and tears, with symptoms worsening upon exposure to wind. These are all due to the Spleen and Lungs being affected by Wind Pathogens and the Liver Meridian experiencing dysfunction. If left untreated, the Wind Pathogen will become rampant and transform into Heat, often leading to continuous redness and ulceration of the eyelids. It is advisable to promptly wash away the ulcerated areas to keep the eyelid skin clean, and simultaneously administer herbs that dispel Wind and calm the Liver.
In this condition, the sclera (white part of the eye) typically turns red first, followed by itching and pain, tearing upon exposure to wind, and difficulty opening the eyes due to a gritty sensation. Sometimes there may be periods of remission, but the condition recurs shortly thereafter. After many years, the eyeball may turn bluish-green, appearing as if covered with coagulated fat and exposed redness, with horizontal red blood vessels resembling threads. This is the result of accumulated toxic Wind and Heat. It is also said that some cases begin with chronic redness and ulceration for years, caused by the Liver Meridian being rushed by Wind-Heat; others result from excessive physical labor injuring Liver Qi. Symptoms may include itching or pain starting from the inner and outer canthi, restlessness of the Heart Qi (Heart spirit), and constant worry, eventually leading to Pterygium (fleshy growth growing onto the cornea) or the emergence of fibrous membranes. Another description notes that the eyelid skin and flesh swell and rise like peach or plum fruits, resembling congealed glue, with frequent hot tears, indicating an injection of Toxic Wind. Treatment should involve using Xiao Feng San (Dispel Wind Powder) and Hua Cao Gao (Flower and Herb Ointment) for eye application. Another account states that when the eyes are attacked by violent wind, causing a membrane to cover the pupil (black pearl) on the sclera, accompanied by eyelid swelling, itching, and pain, Bai Jiang Can San (White Silkworm Powder) should be taken.
