It is *Artemisia arborescens* (Shu Er Cao), also known as Fo Er Cao.
Sweet and neutral in nature, non-toxic.
[Invention] *Ben Cao Jing Ji Zhu* records: Shu Er treats cold bi (painful obstruction syndrome caused by cold pathogen) and cough with alternating chills and fever. Li Dongyuan stated: Fo Er treats cold cough and phlegm, removes cold from the lungs, and greatly raises lung qi. *Ri Hua Zi Ben Cao* states: Generally, cold coughs are mostly due to fire constrained within and cold covering outside; therefore, Fo Er and Duan Dong Hua are essential medicines. The Tou Ge San in *Xuan Ming Lun Fang* treats cough caused by cold constrained in the lung collaterals, using powdered Fo Er, Duan Dong Hua, Stalactite (Zhong Ru), and Realgar (Xiong Huang). These are burned in a furnace, and the smoke is inhaled through a bamboo tube and swallowed. If saliva or phlegm appears, it is spat out, showing frequent efficacy.
Salty and neutral in nature, non-toxic. *Ben Cao Jing Ji Zhu* states: Bitter, sweet, and slightly cold, non-toxic; should be stir-fried and ground before use.
*Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing* treats Qing Mang (blindness or dim vision), excessive ocular discharge, red or white membranes on the skin/eyes, red eyes with pain and tearing. Long-term consumption benefits essence and vision, lightening the body.
[Invention] *Xiang Gan Zhi* says that planting Jue Ming in gardens prevents snakes from entering. Zhu Danxi stated that Jue Ming resolves snake venom, based on this principle for medicinal use, possessing the function of brightening the eyes. *Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing* treats Qing Mang, excessive discharge, red eyes, and tearing, utilizing its bitter-cold property to clear heat. Mixed with water and applied topically to swellings and toxins; applied to the heart region to stop epistaxis (nosebleed); applied to the Taiyang acupoint to treat headache; made into pillows to treat Tou Feng (chronic headache). *Ben Cao Jing Ji Zhu*'s treatment of blue lips verifies its action on liver meridian heat accumulation. It should not be taken long-term; long-term use causes wind diseases damaging the liver. Excessive searching for wind may instead attract wind-heat. When *Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing* states that long-term use benefits essence/vision and lightens the body, it refers specifically to patients with eye diseases and internal stagnation of liver heat. For those with spleen deficiency and blood weakness, overuse will inevitably lead to internal disturbance by deficient wind.
Also known as Luo Shu, or Huang Hao.
Sweet and cold in nature, non-toxic.
*Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing* treats bladder heat, promotes urination, and tonifies middle qi. Long-term consumption makes ears and eyes clear, lightening the body and preventing aging.
[Invention] All diseases arise from deficiency. Deficiency with excess heat leads to difficult urination and daily depletion of essence. Thus, *Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing* advocates clearing bladder heat pathogens; once middle qi recovers, ears and eyes become clear. It can dispel heat, promote urination, remove yin fire, and treat external heat dan zhong (acute red swelling and pain). Leaves treat hot lin (dysuria with scanty dark urine) in the elderly during summer and autumn; crushing fresh leaves to take the natural juice brings immediate relief. For male bai zhuo (white turbid discharge from urethra), combine Difuzi and Bai Lian into pills, taken with boiling water. For female dai xia (leukorrhea), powder Difuzi and take with hot wine, showing frequent efficacy. Seedlings and leaves burned to ash and processed into frost are used to detoxify arsenic trioxide powder, mercury, sulfur, realgar, and nasha (ammonium chloride).
