(Shennong Bencao Jing, Upper Grade)
[Flavor and Nature] Sweet, slightly warm, non-toxic.
[Indications] Primarily treats Xiao Ke (Wasting and Thirsting Syndrome), insufficient Yang impotence, cough with counterflow Qi, chronic cold in the chest and diaphragm, tonifies Yuan Qi, treats Yin wind-damp Bi syndrome (painful obstruction due to wind-dampness affecting the Yin aspect), and long-term use makes the body light and prolongs life.
[Verification] It is said: Produced in the valleys of Huayin and Mount Tai; currently also found in Zezhou, Guozhou, and Luozhou. Those recently sourced from Zezhou are superior. The stones are as thick as a finger, two or three cun in length, with six edges as if planed, white, clear, and lustrous; those five to six cun long are even better. Those with a yellow end and white edges are named Huang Shiyin (Yellow Quartz); those with a red end and white edges are named Chi Shiyin (Red Quartz); those with a green end and red edges are named Qing Shiyin (Green Quartz); those that are black and lustrous are named Hei Shiyin (Black Quartz). If they are thin and long, or large but irregular, and have many flaws, they are unusable. Li Shizhen said: There is a Ying chicken in Zezhou that loves to eat Shiyin, and its nature is tonifying. The five types of Shiyin can subdue Mercury and Dead Arsenic, and they are adverse to Ma Mu Du Gong (a herb).
[Commentary] It is said: Its color is bright and crystal-like like flower calyxes, hence the name Shiyin (Quartz). Because the stone quality can enter the Kidney, the white color can enter the Lung, and the contained Fire Qi can expel cold, it primarily treats Xiao Ke caused by Kidney Qi failing to circulate through the chest, insufficient Yang impotence due to depletion of Tian Gui (Heavenly Water), cough and counterflow Qi due to the Lung's inability to descend smoothly, Bi obstruction and blockage due to Qi lacking command and control, and chronic cold in the chest and diaphragm due to Fire losing its nurturing appearance. Long-term use making the body light and prolonging life is the result of tranquility.
(Shennong Bencao Jing, Upper Grade)
[Flavor and Nature] All sweet and neutral, non-toxic.
[Indications] Primarily treats Huang Dan (Jaundice), diarrhea and dysentery with pus and blood, erosion of the genitals, passage of red and white discharge, abscesses and swellings caused by pathogenic factors, ulcers, hemorrhoids, malignant sores, head sores, scabies, and itching. Long-term use fills the marrow, tonifies Qi, makes the body plump and strong without hunger, lightens the body, and prolongs life. The five colors of Shizhi (Clay) each enter their corresponding Zang organs according to their colors.
[Verification] It is said: Green Shizhi grows in the Southern Mountains or by the sea; White Shizhi grows on Tianlou Mountain of Mount Shaoshi or Mount Tai; Yellow Shizhi grows on Mount Song, colored like the human chest or gosling down; Black Shizhi grows in empty lands west of Luocheng; Red Shizhi grows on Mount Shaoshi or Yanzhou on Mount Tai, colored like crimson, smooth like fat. All are extracted between two stones, with those having fine texture, sticking to the tongue, and adhering to the lips being of the highest grade. Processing involves grinding into powder, washing three times with freshly drawn water, and drying in the sun. Adverse to Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), Da Huang (Rhubarb Root), and Guan Gui (Cinnamon Bark). Ancestors said: Gao (ointment/paste) is liquid, Zhi (fat/clay) is solid; both are fluids from muscles. When muscles are abundant, their Qi spreads outward, implying within the solidification there is a meaning of non-solidification. People only know its astringent and consolidating properties, not fully grasping the general principle of Shizhi; repeatedly reviewing the Bencao Jing will reveal this. It is also said: It has the meaning of connecting the upper, lower, and four sides; the meaning of Kidney Water functioning; the meaning of cleansing the Six Fu Organs; and the meaning of Heart pathogens departing smoothly.
