Clearing fire, resolving stasis, cooling blood, and stopping hiccups.
Sweet and cold. Enters the Hand-Shaoyin Heart meridian and the Foot-Taiyin Spleen and Foot-Yangming Stomach meridians (Spleen and Stomach). Eliminates latent heat, resolves blood stasis, promotes urination, detoxifies alcohol, and treats hematemesis and epistaxis along with various bleeding disorders. (When Heart and Liver fire are hyperactive, forcing blood upward, hematemesis occurs; when Lung fire is excessive, epistaxis occurs. Mugwort Rhizome [Baimaogen] sweetly harmonizes blood and cools it with its cold nature, guiding fire downward, thus treating these conditions. For traumatic bruising and blood stasis, crushing the juice for oral administration is named "Maohua Tang" [Mugwort Flower Decoction], which also treats epistaxis and postpartum strangury.] Blood obstruction with chills and fever. (Blood stasis causes obstruction; obstruction leads to the onset of chills and fever.) Strangury and metrorrhagia. (Blood heat causes metrorrhagia.) Shaoyin disease with hiccups. (This refers to hiccup. The *Shuowen Jiezi* states: "Hui" means qi counterflow. Xu Shen's *Shuowen Jiezi*, Zhou Bi's *Shuowen Benyuan*.) Lung heat with panting and urgency, internal heat with vexation and thirst. Jaundice and edema. (Clearing fire and promoting water metabolism. Li Shizhen said: "It is a good medicine. People neglect it because it is mild, only using bitter-cold drugs that damage the harmonious qi. How can they know this?") Needles can disperse pus. (Taken after steaming in wine; one needle disperses one abscess, two needles disperse two abscesses.) Flowers can stop bleeding. It is not suitable for hematemesis caused by deficiency-cold.
Unblocking, dispelling wind-dampness.
Cold in nature, agile in movement. Bitter in taste, dry in property. Enters the Spleen and Stomach. Removes damp-heat. Also enters the Bladder and Small Intestine. Promotes water pathways, unblocks joints, benefits the nine orifices. It is an essential herb for all types of jaundice and wind-bi syndrome. (A single-herb Bai Xian Pi Tang [White Bark Decoction] treats postpartum wind. Li Shizhen said: "Contemporary physicians only apply it to dermatology, which is superficial.") It also treats wind sores, scabies, and tinea. Swelling and pain in the female vagina. (Damp-heat takes advantage of deficiency to lodge in the Kidney and Bladder.) Lower body deficiency-cold. Even if there are dampness patterns, do not administer it. It is found everywhere in nearby regions. The produce from Sichuan is considered superior. Those from Jiangning Prefecture, Chuzhou, and Runzhou are inferior. The root is yellowish-white with a solid core; use the bark. (Mountain people harvest tender shoots as vegetables.) Incompatible with Sang Piao Xiao (Mantis Egg Case), Jie Geng (Platycodon Root), Fu Ling (Poria), and Bi Xie (Dioscorea Hypoglauca Rhizome). (If a rat bite has ruptured, releasing pus and blood, boiling Bai Xian Pi [Dictamni Cortex] into juice and taking it is effective.)
