Xinyi (Magnolia Flower), also known as Mubi Hua (Wood Pen Flower) and Yingchun Hua (Winter Jasmine Flower). It has the function of dispersing wind-heat in the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner).
Its nature is acrid and warm, with a light and floating quality. It enters the Qi aspect of the Lung and Stomach meridians. It can assist the clear Yang of the Stomach to ascend, reaching the head and brain. It warms the middle, releases the muscle layer, unblocks the nine orifices, and benefits the joints.
Main indications:
When Gallbladder heat transfers to the brain, it causes copious turbid nasal discharge, resulting in Biyuan (Nasal Sinusitis/Profuse Nasal Discharge); when Wind-Cold invades the brain, it causes nasal congestion. (*Neijing* states: Brain fluid exudes as nasal discharge; Wang Bing stated: When Gallbladder fluid is not clear, it becomes turbid discharge, flowing endlessly like a spring, hence called Biyuan.) It also treats headache and facial melasma (melasma can be used to make facial cosmetics).
Dizziness and toothache. These are diseases of the nine orifices caused by wind-heat. Xinyi is acrid, aromatic, and penetrating. It is contraindicated for deficient individuals who occasionally contract Wind-Cold causing nasal congestion. For headaches due to Blood deficiency and blazing fire, taking it will worsen the condition. (Li Shizhen said: The Lung opens into the nose; the Yangming Stomach meridian circles the nose and ascends; the brain is the mansion of the Original Spirit; the nose is the orifice of the Gate of Life. If the Middle Qi is insufficient and Clear Yang does not ascend, the head tilts, and the nine orifices become obstructed. Human memory resides in the brain. Children forget easily because their brain marrow is not yet full; the elderly have poor memory because their brain marrow gradually empties. Whenever one sees a form, a trace remains in the brain. When recalling past events, people close their eyes and look up while thinking; this is the act of concentrating spirit in the brain.) Remove the external fuzz. (Fuzz entering the lungs causes coughing.) Lightly roast before use. Combine with Xiongqiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), Puhuang (Lygodii Spora), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma). (For Biyuan, nasal polyps, nasal obstruction, nasal sores, and nasal sores after smallpox/varicella, grind Xinyi into powder, add a small amount of Shexiang (Musk), dip white parts of Scallion Stem into the powder, and insert into the nostrils several times; this is very effective.)
Chenxiang (Agarwood), promotes circulation, regulates Qi, and heavily warms the Kidney.
Its taste is acrid and bitter, and its nature is warm. Most woods float, but Chenxiang sinks alone, thus it can descend Qi and sink phlegm-fluids. (Anger causes Qi to rise upward; Chenxiang can calm the Liver and descend Qi.) It can both descend and ascend. Thus, it regulates various Qis and harmonizes the Middle Jiao. (Li Dongyuan said: From the highest heaven to the deepest springs, using it as an guiding or messenger herb is most appropriate.) Its color is black, and its substance is Yang. Thus, it enters the Right Kidney and Mingmen (Gate of Life). It warms the essence and assists Yang. It moves Qi and warms the middle. It treats heart and abdominal pain, Jin Kou Du Li (Throat-lock Dysentery/Inability to eat due to dysentery), Zheng Xi (masses and accumulations) and evil pathogens, paralysis caused by cold-wind, Qi diarrhea, Qi strangury, edema of skin and muscles, and constipation due to Large Intestine deficiency-cold.
It is strictly contraindicated for those with Qi deficiency with sinking and Yin deficiency with blazing fire. Those that are black, sink in water, and rich in oil are of good quality. Those that are sweet and fragrant have a neutral nature; those that are pungent and spicy have a hot nature. (Those with partridge-spot patterns are named Huangchen (Yellow Agarwood); those black like ox horns are named Jiaochen (Horn Agarwood); those soft when chewed and curling when shaved are named Huangxichen (Yellow Wax Agarwood), which are rare; those half-sinking are Jianxiang Zhanxiang (Boiled Agarwood Stack Incense), which should not be used; Jigu Xiang (Chicken Bone Incense), though sinking, has a hollow core and is unusable; non-sinking ones are Huangshu Xiang (Yellow Ripe Incense).) For decoctions, take orally; or grind into juice and take with water. For pills and powders, wrap in paper and place in the bosom until dry, then grind. Avoid fire. (Wu Qiu in *Huoren Xintong* recorded treating chronic hiccups due to Cold Stomach: use Chenxiang, Zisu, and Baishadoukou Ren each 1 qian, grind into powder, take 5-7 fen each time with Shi Di Tang (Persimmon Calyx Decoction); effective.)
