Mu Gua (Chaenomeles Fruit): Its aroma enters the Liver and Lung meridians. It is warm in nature and unblocks the collaterals. Due to its fragrant and aromatic qi, it provides immediate relief for those with tendon spasms (tendon contracture). Its sour taste has an astringent property, providing benefit for those with flaccid tendons. For conditions of Huoluan (cholera-like disease) with tendon spasms, it is used to soothe and harmonize. For pathogenic factors of Wind-Cold-Dampness causing Bi syndrome (painful obstruction), taking it can disseminate and reach the exterior. (Mu Gua grows everywhere, but the variety from Xuancheng is considered superior. It tastes sour and astringent, is warm in nature, and has an aromatic fragrance. It enters the Liver and Spleen meridians. It specializes in treating diseases of the tendons and vessels. Spasms can be relaxed due to its aroma; flaccidity can be treated due to its astringency. Conditions such as Huoluan with tendon spasms, Bi syndrome, and Hong Kong foot [gouty arthritis] all belong to disharmony between the Liver and Spleen, manifesting as tendon vessel diseases. Mu Gua can soothe the Liver and harmonize the Spleen, relaxing and benefiting the tendons and vessels, thus treating all these conditions.)
Tian Gua Zi (Sweet Melon Seed): It possesses the function of opening phlegm and promoting Qi flow. Sweet and cold in nature, it moistens the Lungs. It has the effect of descending turbidity and expelling pus, lubricating and unblocking the intestines. (Tian Gua Zi refers to the Jin Gua Zi eaten in summer. Nowadays, people generally substitute it with Cai Gua Zi [vegetable melon seed], rendering it useless medicinally. It is sweet and cold in nature, specializing in clearing Lung heat and lubricating the intestines. Thus, it can treat hot phlegm in the Upper Jiao and accumulation/stagnation within the abdomen. Xi Gua Zi Ren [Watermelon Seed Kernel] has similar effects.)
Li Zi (Chestnut): Although it has the functions of nourishing the Stomach, thickening the Intestines, sustaining hunger, and tonifying the Kidneys, raw consumption is hard to digest, and cooked consumption tends to stagnate Qi. Ultimately, it is not a medicinal herb for treating diseases, but merely one type of food.
Xiang Yuan Pi (Citrus Reticulata 'Chachi' Peel): Pungent and neutral, it promotes Qi movement and broadens the Middle Jiao. It can dissebrate the Spleen and Lungs. Aromatic and bitter, it eliminates phlegm and guides out stagnation, though it may consume Yin fluids. (Xiang Yuan Pi is pungent, bitter, and neutral. It enters the Spleen and Lung meridians. It directs Qi downward, eliminates phlegm, broadens the Middle Jiao, and relieves chest fullness. Although it lacks the warmth of Ju Pi [Tangerine Peel], it ultimately belongs to aromatic and drying substances. Individuals with Yin deficiency and blood dryness should still avoid using it.)
Fo Shou (Fingered Citron): Regulates Qi and eliminates phlegm. It combines warming-drying properties with sour and bitter flavors. It smooths the Middle Jiao and disperses rebellious Qi. Its pungent and aromatic nature reaches directly into the Liver and Spleen. (Fo Shou tastes pungent and sour, is warm in nature, and has an aromatic fragrance. It enters the Liver and Spleen meridians. Its function specializes in regulating Qi and relieving chest fullness. It is suitable only for cases of Liver and Spleen Qi stagnation. Those with insufficient Yin and Blood also find it too drying.)
