Camphor (Zhangnao)
Aromatic and drying for dampness. It is a necessity for external treatment. Pungent and hot, it kills parasites and serves as an application medicine for sores. (Camphor originates from Shaozhou, prepared by decocting camphor wood. Its nature is pungent and hot with an aromatic odor; it can generate fire in water, open orifices, disperse cold-dampness, kill parasites, and ward off evil, possessing unique expertise. However, it is ultimately not suitable for internal use; it is only applicable for external treatment of scabies, tinea pedis (Hong Kong foot), either by washing, fumigating, or applying powder to kill parasites and absorb dampness.)
Aloe (Luhui)
Eliminates pathogens and reduces fever; possesses the property of moistening and purging downward. Bitter and cold in nature, it brightens the eyes, cools the liver, kills parasites, and eliminates malnutrition syndromes (Gan accumulation). (Aloe originates from Persia and other countries; its appearance resembles black maltose and is a resin. As a bitter, cold, and moistening purgative, it has no special merits beyond clearing heat and killing parasites. It is used in Gengyi Wan (Change Bowel Movement Pill) for its moistening effect. It is used to brighten the eyes and treat Gan syndrome for its cold nature. Examining its qi, substance, and flavor, it enters the Spleen, Stomach, Large Intestine, Liver, and Kidney meridians; thus, its indications do not depart from these meridians.)
Asafoetida (awei)
It benefits the Spleen and Stomach by resolving accumulations; it uniquely embodies pungent and warm properties to kill parasites. Its odor is foul and difficult to bear, yet it is effective externally for dissipating masses. (Asafoetida originates from various Western regions. One theory states it is a resin, another that it is made from decocted root grass; it is unknown which is correct. Its nature is pungent and warm with a foul odor, entering the Spleen and Stomach meridians to resolve accumulations and kill parasites. Although extremely foul-smelling, it can also repel odors. It can be used for conditions such as halitosis and axillary odor. However, human Qi and Blood flow smoothly upon smelling fragrant odors but逆流 (reverse/flow poorly) upon smelling foul odors. Even if various external and internal applications are effective, given there are many good medicines, one need not seek merit by creating trouble.)
Benzoin (Anxi Xiang)
Aromatic and opening to orifices; it has the function of warming and disseminating Qi and Blood. Pungent and bitter, it wards off pathogens; it excels in promoting the free flow of the Heart and Spleen. It may be used to calm the Spirit and subdue malignancy, or taken as a decoction or burned as incense. (Benzoin originates from Annam, Persia, and other countries; it is also a resin. Its texture resembles peach gum, being flexible and unbreakable. When burned, it is said to "rest" various evils, hence its name. It is pungent, bitter, slightly warm, aromatic, and non-toxic, entering the Heart and Spleen meridians. It opens orifices and wards off evil. Its aromatic and warm-dispersing nature allows Qi and Blood to circulate freely, resulting in a comfortable and smooth state throughout the body; thus, conditions such as Gui Zhu (ghostly infection) Gu Du (poisonous pestilence), sudden stroke with coma, and various heart and abdominal pains can be cured.)
