Poria (Fuling)
The color of Poria belongs to Metal. Its efficacy first enters the Lung Meridian. It guides the Bladder to promote urination through Qi transformation, which relies entirely on the miraculous function of Qi transformation. By clearing the regulatory function of the Lungs to move phlegm, it specializes in the duty of separating and eliminating dampness. Borrowing the residual Qi from pine roots, it is sweet, bland, and mild in nature; obtaining the essence of Kun Earth (soil), it is firm and dense. Sorrow, resentment, palpitations, and fright are all disasters caused by phlegm accumulation; vomiting and panic (Zhenchong, characterized by severe heart palpitations or anxiety) are entirely the fault of fluid retention pathogens. One can examine the syndrome to apply treatment, thereby naturally seeking prescriptions for specific diseases. The part attached to the root is called Fushen (Poria with Hostwood), which guards the Zang organs and calms the mind, taking sole charge of calming the spirit. The red-colored one is Chi Fuling (Red Poria), which enters the Ying (Nutritive) level and guides heat downward, with a stronger diuretic effect. The peel acts on the skin, retaining the same nature as the main body. (Poria grows in deep valleys. After large pine trees have stood for many years and been cut down, the spiritual Qi of the pine roots remains郁结 (depressed and unceasing), condensing into this substance. Those with abundant essence grow far from the root; those attached to the root are called Fushen. Its color varies between red and white, with white being superior. It is sweet and bland in taste, and mild in nature. It ascends to enter the Lung and Spleen meridians and descends to reach the Small Intestine, Bladder, and Kidney meridians. It benefits primordial Qi and clarifies the spirit. It can clear deficiency-heat in the Lungs and Spleen and direct it downward. Due to its bland, permeating, drying, and draining properties, it can transform phlegm-fluids in the chest and guide damp pathogens from the lower body. As for Fushen and Chi Fuling, their indications and flavors are identical, differing only slightly in their functions of calming the spirit and promoting urination.)
Amber (Hupo)
Amber is formed by spiritual Qi. It opens the Heart orifices, calms the spirit, and stabilizes the soul. Its nature is bland and neutral, condensed and gathered. It descends Lung Metal and guides water fluids for separation and elimination. Its red color enters the Ying (Nutritive) level and also promotes blood circulation and dries dampness. Its sweet taste transforms toxins and can be used to remove corneal opacities and generate flesh. (Amber is formed from pine resin buried in the earth for many years. Its texture is hard, and its color is red. It is mild, sweet, and bland. It enters the Blood aspect of the Heart, Lung, Small Intestine, and Bladder meridians. It dissipates stasis, unblocks orifices, clears the Lungs, and渗湿 (permeates and drains dampness). Calming the Heart and stabilizing the soul are its strengths. Ultimately, it is a bland, permeating, and descending agent. It can be used for conditions such as strangury (Linzheng), turbid urine, and urinary retention caused by damp-heat in the Blood aspect of the Small Intestine and Bladder. In medicines for generating flesh and removing opacities, it is used for its ability to harmonize the Ying level and transform dampness. Because it has been in the earth the longest, hundred toxins are transformed when they encounter earth, thus enabling it to detoxify.)
