To promote the action of medicines: Pungent flavors can disperse, bitter flavors can descend, sweet flavors reside in the center and moderate, strong flavors are hot and toxic, and bland flavors promote urination. Used as a guiding agent, it can circulate through the exterior of the entire body and guide medicines to the highest parts. Hot drinks damage the Lung; warm drinks harmonize the Middle Jiao (Middle Burner). Drinking moderately harmonizes blood and promotes Qi circulation, strengthens spirit and wards off cold, relieves mood and dispels sorrow, expels evil and filth, warms the Lower Jiao (Lower Burner), and facilitates the movement of medicinal properties. Excessive drinking damages the spirit and consumes blood (it can also cause chaotic blood flow, hence the face and body turn red after drinking), injures the Stomach and scorches essence, stirs up fire and generates phlegm, incites anger and aids lust (wine is an aphrodisiac), leading to various damp-heat diseases (excessive drinking causes ministerial fire to flare up, scorching Metal of the Lung, resulting in cough with phlegm. The Spleen becomes sluggish due to fire, the Stomach vomits due to fire, the Heart becomes confused and manic due to fire, the Liver becomes irritable due to fire, the Gallbladder loses fear due to fire, the Kidney suffers from depleted essence due to fire, leading to hematemesis, Xiao Ke (Wasting and Thirsting Syndrome), consumptive injury, Gu Ge (obstruction syndrome), carbuncles and sores, blindness, causing infinite harm. Wang Ying said: People know to avoid morning drinking, but do not realize that night drinking is even worse. Lying down drunk and full causes heat to stagnate in the Three Jiao (Triple Burner), damaging the Heart and eyes. Nighttime Qi converges, but wine disperses it, disturbing clarity, exhausting the Spleen and Stomach, retaining dampness and stirring fire, thus causing many illnesses. Zhu Xi said: Moderating oneself by getting drunk is acceptable). Pure wine without lime additives and aged for a long time is superior. It is incompatible with Zhi Ke (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus), Ge Hua (Flos Puerariae), Chi Dou Hua (Flos Phaseoli), Lv Dou Fen (Powder of Semen Phaseoli Mungo), and salty brine (salt dissolves its toxicity, representing water controlling fire).
To tonify Yang and dissipate blood stasis:
Pungent, warm, slightly sour. It is the vegetable of the Liver, entering the Blood level to move Qi. It enters the Heart to benefit the Stomach, assists the Kidney to tonify Yang (also known as Tu Zhong Ru [Earth Stalactite], implying its warming and tonifying nature), clears Stomach heat, fills Lung Qi, dissipates blood stasis, and drives out retained phlegm. It treats hematemesis, epistaxis, trauma, and all blood disorders (crushed juice mixed with child's urine), Ye Ge Fan Wei (dysphagia and regurgitation) (it can dissolve blood stasis and retained phlegm in the stomach region, treating regurgitation and epigastric pain. Danxi said: For pain caused by dead blood retained in the stomach region due to eating hot foods or depression/anger, add Jiuzhi [Leek Juice] and Jie Geng (Radix Platycodonis) to the prescription to lift Qi and Blood; for heart pain caused by Kidney Qi attacking upward, mix Jiuzhi with Wu Ling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) to make pills, taken on an empty stomach with Huixiang Tang (Fennel Decoction). For regurgitation, use Niu Nai (Cow's Milk) added with Jiuzhi and Jiangzhi (Ginger Juice), taken slowly and warm. This is because Jiuzhi dissipates stasis, Jiangzhi descends Qi, resolves phlegm, and harmonizes the Stomach, while Niu Nai clears heat, moistens dryness, and tonifies deficiency. *Dan Fang Zong Lu* states: Inability to eat indicates Fire; vomiting food after a long time indicates lack of Fire. Although treatment methods differ by Cold, Heat, Deficiency, and Excess, the root lies in stabilizing Stomach Qi. If Yin and Yang ascend and descend evenly, vomiting and reflux will naturally subside and heal), resolves drug poison, food poison, and toxins from rabid dogs, snakes, and insects. Eating too much clouds the spirit. Avoid Honey and Beef (Wang Ang notes: Nowadays, many people stir-fry beef with leeks, which tastes excellent, and no harm has been observed. The Classics state: Toxic drugs attack pathogens, five grains nourish, five meats benefit, five vegetables fill, five fruits assist. Taking them together according to their flavors and aromas supplements essence and benefits Qi. The five vegetables are Leek, Scallion, Garlic, Okra, and Broad Bean leaves; the five fruits are Peach, Plum, Jujube, Apricot, and Chestnut).
Jiu Zi (Seed of Allium tuberosum) is pungent, sweet, and warm. It tonifies the Liver and Kidney, assists Ming Men (Gate of Life), and warms the waist and knees. It treats Jin Wei (sinew atrophy) and enuresis, spermatorrhea and hematuria, leukorrhea and Bai Yin (seminal emission during urination). The Classics state: Disease of the Foot Jueyin (Liver Meridian) leads to enuresis. Endless thoughts and excessive intercourse lead to Jin Wei and Bai Yin. Jiu Zi combined with Long Gu (Fossilized Bones) and Sang Piao Xiao (Mantis Egg Case) can treat these conditions because it enters the Jueyin meridian to tonify the Liver, Kidney, and Ming Men. Ming Men is the mansion where essence is stored). Steam, sun-dry, or stir-fry, then grind for use (burned smoke is used to fumigate tooth worms).
