(Zelan, also known as Qilang. Its leaves resemble those of Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui). Its fragrance resembles that of Agastache Herba (Baizhuxiang). Hence the names "Qilang" and "Jiangli". Jiangli grass grows in rivers, thus it is also called Jiangli.)

As a herb entering the Hand and Foot Taiyin meridians, when added to Shunqi Wuyao San (Regulating Qi and Cinnamon Twig Powder), it tonifies the Lung; when added to Huangqi Si Junzi Tang (Astragalus Four Gentlemen Decoction), it tonifies the Spleen.

(When using large or small Zelan, finely chop it, place it in a silk bag, and hang it in the southern corner of the house to dry before use.)
[Properties and Flavor]
Bitter, Slightly Warm, Non-toxic.
[Indications]
Metal wounds, carbuncles, and suppurative sores. Lancao (Lysimachiae Herba) and Zelan have an aromatic and warm nature, with an acrid flavor that disperses. They belong to Yin containing Yang. They are herbs for the Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian and Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian. The Spleen favors aromatic scents, and the Liver benefits from acrid dispersion. When Spleen Qi is relaxed, the Triple Burner becomes unobstructed and Righteous Qi harmonizes. When Liver Qi stagnation dissipates, Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi) circulate freely and pathogenic factors are resolved. Lancao enters the Qi aspect, thus it can promote water passage, eliminate phlegm retention, kill Gu poison, repel evil, and serves as an excellent medicine for Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst syndrome/Diabetes). Zelan enters the Blood aspect, thus it can treat edema, apply topically to carbuncles, break blood stasis, eliminate masses (Zheng Jia), and serves as a crucial herb for gynecology. Although they belong to the same category, their functions differ slightly. This is just as Chi Fuling (Red Poria) and Bai Fuling (White Poria), as well as Chi Shaoyao (Red Peony Root) and Bai Shaoyao (White Peony Root), have different tonifying and purging effects.
