(Caoguo) is the same as Doukou (Amomum tsao-ko).
[Flavor and Nature]
Pungent, warm, astringent, non-toxic. It is also of great pungency and heat, belonging to Yang, ascending and floating. It enters the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian.
[Indications]
Warms the Middle Jiao; treats epigastric and abdominal pain, vomiting; eliminates bad breath; directs Qi downward; stops Huoluan (cholera-like syndrome) and all types of cold Qi disorders; resolves alcohol toxicity; harmonizes and tonifies the Stomach; strengthens the Spleen and promotes digestion; expels exogenous cold causing heart and stomach pain; treats malarial fevers caused by miasma; addresses vomiting and diarrhea due to summerheat injury; treats dysentery, dysphagia, regurgitation, fullness and stagnation, acid regurgitation, phlegm-fluid retention and accumulations; treats morning sickness (Ezu) and leukorrhea in women; dispels cold and dries dampness; opens depression and breaks Qi stagnation; kills toxins from fish and meat; counteracts the toxicity of Cinnabar. However, the therapeutic action of Doukou lies in its pungent, hot, ascending, and dispersing nature, which allows it to enter the Taiyin and Yangming meridians to dispel cold, dry dampness, open depression, and transform food stagnation. Southern regions are low and damp, with mountainous miasma and smoke; people consume sour and salty foods, often leading to Spleen and Stomach disorders characterized by cold-dampness stagnation. Therefore, culinary spices must be compatible with these conditions. However, excessive consumption can generate Spleen heat, damage Lung Qi, and impair vision. It is said that using Doukou together with Zhimu (Anemarrhena Rhizome) treats malarial chills and fever, taking advantage of their Yin-Yang balance to prevent excess. Caoguo specifically treats the exclusive cold of the Taiyin, while Zhimu specifically treats the exclusive fire of the Yangming.
[Flavor and Nature]
Pungent, warm, non-toxic.
[Indications]
Cough with rebellious Qi, prone to wheezing, throat obstruction (Houbi), various convulsions and epilepsy caused by cold pathogens and evil Qi, Xiaoke (wasting-thirst) with wheezing and rapid breathing, treating urgent and hot labor coughs that are continuous, thick and sticky sputum, Feiwu (lung atrophy) and Feiyong (lung abscess) with expectoration of pus and blood, moistening the Lungs and Heart, benefiting the Five Zang organs, relieving irritability and resolving phlegm, cleansing the Liver and brightening the eyes, and treating stroke and other diseases. The *Shennong Bencao Jing* indicates it treats cough. Ancient formulas use it as the premier herb for warming the Lungs and treating cough.
Incompatible/Adverse: Gleditsiae Fructus Spina (Zaojia), Natrii Sulfas (Xiaoshi), Scrophulariae Radix (Xuanshen).
Aversion to: Fritillariae Bulbus (Beimu), Xanthocerii Fructus (Xinyi), Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang), Astragali Radix (Huangqi), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Forsythiae Fructus (Lianqiao), Celosiae Semen (Qingxiang).
[Flavor and Nature]
Pungent, warm, non-toxic. Strong aroma but thin flavor; ascending and Yang. It is a principal herb for the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian.
[Indications]
Treats hernia and masses (Shenjia) in women, cold and painful swelling in the genital region, abdominal urgency; dispels wind and treats headache; promotes skin growth and enhances complexion; wards off mist and dew; moistens and nourishes; treats wind pathogen invasion and heals traumatic injuries (Jinchuang); can be used for bathing preparations and facial creams. Treats 160 types of malignant wind and Gui Zhu (ghostly transmission); alleviates cold lower back pain caused by pathogen infiltration; promotes urination; unblocks blood circulation; treats head wind; treats skin blemishes, rhinophyma (Jiu zao), acne, and epilepsy; treats Taiyang headache and vertex headache; treats severe cold invading the brain causing pain radiating to teeth and cheeks; treats wind-dampness of the head, face, body, and skin; treats Dai Mai disorders causing stiff spine and厥逆 (cold limbs/fainting); treats carbuncles and sores, discharges pus, and fills internal cavities. Gaoben is a wind-dispelling herb for the Taiyang Meridian; its Qi is vigorous and strong. It is essential for headaches caused by cold qi stagnation in this meridian; vertex headaches cannot be resolved without it. Used together with Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), it treats clear cold-dampness invading the Upper Jiao from mist and dew. Used with Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) as a facial cream, it treats both wind and dampness, following the principle of similarity.
Incompatible/Adverse: Ru (Root of a specific plant, likely referring to a root herb like Pueraria or similar contextually, kept as transliteration 'Ru' or generic root reference).
