[Flavor and Nature]
Sweet, sour, and acrid; very warm in nature; non-toxic. It has a descending action and belongs to the category of Yang containing Yin.
[Indications]
Nourishes Heart Qi (Heart Energy). Brightens the eyes and benefits Essence (Jing). Treats abdominal pain, Changpi (intestinal disorder with dysentery), and dysentery with red and white discharge (pus and blood). Promotes free urination. Also treats carbuncles, sores, ulcers, hemorrhoids, women's Bingzhong (metrorrhagia) and Louxia (leukorrhea or spotting), difficult labor, and retention of the placenta. Long-term use supplements Marrow (Sui), improves complexion, enhances wisdom, prevents hunger, lightens the body, and prolongs life. Supplements deficiency and fatigue of the Five Zang organs, nourishes Heart Blood, generates muscle tissue, thickens the intestines and stomach, eliminates dampness, and retracts rectal prolapse.
[Flavor and Nature]
Sweet and sour; neutral in nature; non-toxic.
[Indications]
Nourishes Lung Qi. Thickens the intestines. Supplements Marrow. Treats insufficiency of the Five Zang organs caused by fright and palpitations, vexation in the chest, abdominal pain, and promotes water passage. Treats heat in the Small Intestine leading to loose stools, pus, and blood in stool. Treats women's Bingzhong, leukorrhea, and red-and-white vaginal discharge. Expels toxins from carbuncles, sores, ulcers, and hemorrhoids. Long-term use calms the Mind (Shen), reduces hunger, lightens the body, and prolongs life. Astringes the Large Intestine. The *Shennong Bencao Jing* states that the effects of the five-colored Shi Zhi are similar, while the *Mingyi Bielu* lists them separately. Currently, only Chi Shi Zhi (Red Halloysite) and Bai Shi Zhi (White Halloysite) are commonly used to stop dysentery. Their applications have three main aspects: they possess the ability to consolidate the intestines and stomach through astringency; they expel the placenta without the harsh purgative force of pushing downward. "Astringency" can treat prolapse and slipping conditions; Shi Zhi is an astringent agent. Chi Shi Zhi enters Bing (Fire/Heart), and Bai Shi Zhi enters Geng (Metal/Lung). Both are herbs of the Hand and Foot Yangming meridians. Their flavor is sweet, their nature is warm, their substance is heavy, and their property is astringent. Being astringent and heavy, they can absorb dampness, stop bleeding, and secure the lower jiao. Being sweet and warm, they can benefit Qi, generate flesh, and harmonize the middle jiao. The "middle" refers to the intestines, stomach, muscles, palpitations, and jaundice. The "lower" refers to intestinal diarrhea, dysentery, metrorrhagia, leukorrhea, and seminal emission. The therapeutic effects of the five types are largely similar, so the *Shennong Bencao Jing* does not separate them into entries but states that each color supplements its corresponding Zang organ. Although the *Mingyi Bielu* divides them into five types, their properties, flavors, and indications are not significantly different; the distinction based on the Five Flavors matching the Five Colors is somewhat arbitrary. Chi Shi Zhi and Bai Shi Zhi enter the Qi level and Blood level, respectively, which is why practitioners sometimes select them. Zhang Zhongjing used Tao Ren Tang to treat dysentery with pus and blood, utilizing the heavy and astringent nature of Chi Shi Zhi to enter the Blood level of the Lower Jiao and secure collapse; the acrid and warming nature of Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger) warms the Qi level of the Lower Jiao and tonifies deficiency; the sweet and warm nature of Jing Mi (Rice) assists Shi Zhi and Gan Jiang to moisten the intestines and stomach.
Chi Shi Zhi is incompatible with Yuan Hua (Genkwa Flos) and is opposed to Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) and Song Zhi (Pini Resina). Bai Shi Zhi is incompatible with Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), and Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) and is opposed to Song Zhi.
