Avoid iron. Poria cocos (Fuling) serves as a guiding herb. It is inhibited by Trogopterus Dung (Wulingzhi), and its properties are antagonistic to Soapberry Fruit (Zaojiao), Black Soybean (Heidou), Purple Quartz (Zi Shiyu), Human Urine (Ren Niao), and Alum (Lujing). It is chemically incompatible with Veratrum Rhizome (Lilu). Note: In Jiaotai Wan, Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen) and Soapberry Fruit are used together, indicating that the "antagonism" does not result in true mutual inhibition. When treating Amenorrhea (Yuebi), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma and Trogopterus Dung are combined, indicating that the "inhibition" does not result in true mutual fear.
It tastes sweet, slightly bitter, and is non-toxic. It enters the Spleen and Stomach meridians. It replenishes Qi, unblocks collaterals, relieves thirst, and generates body fluids. For skin fever after sweating, or for chronic dysentery where the body becomes cool, no other herb can treat it as effectively; for a faint pulse nearly imperceptible, or impending death from Blood depletion, no other herb can save it. It restores Yang Qi when breath is nearly exhausted, and tonifies Qi damaged by heat. It is not suitable for patients with a ruddy or dark complexion, robust Qi, Lung Heat, and a long, solid, slippery, rapid, and forceful pulse. It is suitable for patients with a white or yellowish complexion, weak Qi, Lung Cold, and a large, fine, weak, and forceless pulse.
It grows in the valleys of Shangdang and Liaodong. Liaodong refers to Korean Ginseng (Gaoli Shen). Harvested in the second and eighth lunar months, avoid exposure to wind. Roots resembling the human form are considered superior. Shangdang is Luozhou. Locals consider Ginseng harmful to their region and no longer harvest it. What is currently used is all Liaodong Ginseng. Seeds can also be collected and sown in October, similar to planting vegetables. Those harvested in autumn and winter are solid and firm; those harvested in spring and summer are hollow and soft. This is not due to the land having solid or hollow qualities. Liaodong Ginseng with skin has a yellow, lustrous color resembling Saposhnikovia Root (Fangfeng); without skin, it is hard and white like powder. Counterfeits are made from Adenophora Root (Shashen), Sinosenecio Rhizome (Qini), and Platycodon Root (Jiegeng). Those that are light, pithless, and taste bland are Adenophora Root; those that are light and pithless are Sinosenecio Rhizome; those that are hard, have a pith, and taste bitter are Platycodon Root; those that are solid, have a pith, and taste sweet with a slight bitterness are Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma.
