[Sha Shen (Adenophorae Radix)]
It is incompatible with Fang Ji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix) and contrary to Li Lu (Veratri Rhizoma).
Sweet, bitter, slightly cold. Enters the Liver, Spleen, and Lung meridians. Clears Lung Fire, nourishes Liver Qi. Treats Lung Wei (Lung atrophy due to chronic cough), cures sudden pain of Hernia Qi (Hernia).
Found in mountains and plains everywhere. Leaves resemble Gou Qi (Lycii Fructus) but have small fine teeth. Opens purple-white flowers, bears fruit like Dong Qing (Ilicis Fructus). Those growing in sandy soil are over a chi long and as thick as a tiger's mouth; those growing in earthy soil are short and small. Roots and rhizomes all contain white juice. Harvested in autumn months, they are white and solid; harvested in spring months, they are yellow and hollow. Merchants often steam and press them to pass off as Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), but their texture is light, taste bland, and length short. Contraindicated for Lung Cold.
For Lung Heat Cough, decoct in water and take. (Verified Formula No. 1.)
For sudden onset of Hernia Qi, pain radiating to the genitals like twisting. Grind into powder, take with wine. (No. 2.)
For Leukorrhea, take two qian of powder with rice water. (No. 3.)
For skin wind-itching, scabies, tinea, and malignant sores, take internally and wash externally. (No. 4.)
[Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix)]
Soak in rice water, stir-fry before use. Feared by Dan Cao (Gentianae Radix) and Bai Ji (Bletillae Rhizoma); avoid pork.
Bitter, pungent, slightly warm. Enters the Hand-Taiyin Lung and Foot-Shaoyin Kidney meridians. Treats throat pain, opens chest and diaphragm congestion. Drains pus and blood, resolves stagnation and depression, disperses nodules and stagnation, reduces swelling and hardness. Treats Lung Abscess after ulceration, stops stabbing chest pain, directs rebellious Qi downward, best relieves nasal congestion. Cures all oral and lingual ulcers, also treats red, swollen, and painful eyes. Its nature is light and floating, moving upward; it can guide other herbs to the highest part of the chest, like iron or stone entering a river—without a boat, they cannot be carried. With this single herb among other medicines, they cannot sink.
Found everywhere. Stems and leaves resemble a small apricot tree, similar to Ji (Shepherdiae Fructus), but its root has a heart. If there is no heart, it is Ji. Harvested in the eighth month.
Sheng [Jie Geng] (1 qian), Jing Hua [Chrysanthemi Flos] (3 qian), Jie Geng (3 qian), Yi Ren (Coicis Semen) (5 qian), Bei Mu (Fritillariae Bulbus) (1.5 qian), Gan Cao (Licorice Root), Tian Li Li (Descurainiae Semen Lepidii seu Sisymbrii) (each).

Jie Geng Tang (Same as Verified Formula No. 1 above.)
Treats Lung Abscess with cough and chest fullness, chills, rapid pulse, dry throat without thirst, occasional discharge of turbid saliva with foul odor, and long-term expectoration of pus and blood. (Formulas No. 1.)
The symptoms of Lung Abscess should be carefully examined. Some resemble Chest Bi (Chest Obstruction); some share similarities with Wei (Atrophy) and Yong (Abscess); some involve Jue Yin ascending rebellion, and after gastric abscess ulceration, all expectorate pus and blood.
A difference of a hair's breadth leads to an error of a thousand miles. An error here determines life or death instantly. It is not that the prescription lacks efficacy, but that the symptom differentiation is unclear.
