(Recorded in the Lower Category of *Bie Lu*)
[Names] Ci (pronounced Qiu. From *Erya*), Yu (Shuyu. From *Fangyan*).
Li Shizhen stated: According to Wang Anshi's *Zi Shuo*: It sets up a single-sided net, and punishes objects only after they touch it. Knowing the meaning of "punish" (Zhu), hence it is called Spider (*Zhi Zhu*). *Erya* writes it as "Min", with the radical "Min" (turtle/frog), where Min refers to a large belly. Yang Xiong's *Fangyan* records: East of Hangu Pass, it is called "Min"; in Northern Yan and the Korean peninsula, it is called "Xiao Xiao".
[Collection and Explanation]
Tao Hongjing said: There are dozens of species of spiders. Currently used in medicine are only those that spin webs resembling fish traps, also known as "Peng Qi". Women also use them in alchemical practices. The other species are not used in medicine.
Su Song said: Spiders are found everywhere, and their varieties are extremely numerous. *Erya* mentions names such as Ci, Min, and Xiao Xiao.
Chen Zangqi said: Xiao Xiao spins webs in holes and on plants and trees. Tao Hongjing's statement that this is the spider is incorrect.
Su Gong said: Those with five colors, or those with large bodies and growing prickly hairs, as well as those that are thin and small, are not used in medicine. Only those with small bodies, large abdomens, and containing grayish-yellow pus inside are authentic. Take spiders spinning webs on the west side of houses, remove the head and legs, and grind into paste for use.
Kou Zongshi said: There are many varieties of spiders, all poisonous. Nowadays, people mostly use the deep-gray ones with large bellies that spin round webs in the air at eaves, fence tops, and alleys. If its urine splashes on a person, it causes sores and tinea.
Su Gong said: In Jiannan and Shandong regions, bites from this insect result in silk emerging from the wound, with frequent deaths reported.
Li Shizhen said: When spiders spin webs, their silk winds to the right. There are many species, varying in size and color. *Erya* only divides them into four types: Spider (*Zhi Zhu*), Grass Spider (*Cao Zhi Zhu*), Earth Spider (*Tu Zhi Zhu*), and Xiao Xiao. Spider bites are very toxic and often recorded in classics.
According to Liu Yuxi's *Chuan Xin Fang*: Pan Guan Zhang Yanshang was bitten on the neck by a spotted spider. Overnight, two red veins wrapped around his neck down to the chest, and his head and face swelled to the size of several dou, nearly causing death. Someone mixed great blue plant juice with musk and realgar, threw a spider into it, which immediately turned into water. This liquid was applied to the bite site, resulting in complete recovery in two days. It is also said: In the 10th year of Zhenyuan, Yuan Wai Cui Congzhi stated: A person bitten by a spider had a belly swollen like a pregnant woman. A monk advised drinking goat milk, and he recovered in a few days. Also, Li Jiang's *Bingbu Shouji* records: For those bitten by spiders with sores all over the body, drinking good wine until drunk causes the worm to emerge from the flesh like millet grains. Liu Yu's *Xi Shi Ji* records: In Chimu'er City, there is an insect like a spider; if it poisons a person, they feel irritability and thirst, and die immediately upon drinking water. Only drinking grape wine until drunk and vomiting can resolve the toxicity. This is similar to conditions in the Sai Lan region of the Western Regions. Another method involves rubbing the affected area thoroughly with sheep liver; pain stops after one day and night, and the skin peels off like a molt. Cattle and horses die if injured by this. Yuan Zhen's *Changqing Ji* records: Spiders in Bazhong are large and toxic. Applying realgar mixed with vinegar cures it; using the rat-borne insect to eat the silk leads to recovery. Without urgent treatment, the toxin reaching the heart can cause death. Duan Chengshi's *Youyang Zazu* records: In deep mountains, there are spiders as large as wagon wheels that can eat humans and animals. These various accounts are things one must know. *Huainan Wanbi Shu* records: Eating pig fat for 100 days makes the red-spotted spider toxic enough that its body applied to cloth prevents wetting by rain; applied to feet, one can walk on water. *Baopuzi* states: Taking pills made from spiders and water horses combined with Fengyi Water Immortal Pill allows one to live underwater. These are all fantastical tales of alchemists and are not credible.
[Properties and Flavor] Slightly cold, slightly toxic.
*Tang Shenwei's Bencao* (Da Ming) states: Non-toxic. Averse to turnip greens and realgar.
Li Shizhen stated: Spiders should not be consumed in food or drink.
[Indications] Adults and children suffering from Zhuan disease, and children with abdominal distension (Ding Xi syndrome) unable to walk for three years (*Bie Lu*). For bites/stings from centipedes, bees, and scorpions, place the spider on the bite site to suck out the toxin (Tao Hongjing). Mainly treats snake venom, warm malaria, and stops vomiting and cholera-like symptoms (Su Gong). Juice applied to treat snake bites. Roasted and eaten to treat pediatric abdominal malnutrition (Su Song). Mainly treats facial paralysis, rectal prolapse, sores/abscesses, fox odor (axillary osmidrosis), and dental caries (Li Shizhen). Spotted spiders treat malaria and carbuncles (*Rihua Bencao*).
[Elucidation]
Su Song said: *Bie Lu* states spiders treat hernia. Zhang Zhongjing treated Yin Hu Hernia, characterized by asymmetry and intermittent movement, using Spider Powder. Spider (14 pieces, stir-fried until charred), Cinnamon Twig (Ban Liang), ground into powder. Take 8 fen per dose, twice daily. Honey pills are also effective.
Su Gong said: Spiders can subdue snakes, thus treating snake venom, though this specific indication is missing from the original text.
Li Shizhen said: *Helin Yulu* records: Spiders can subdue centipedes by spraying urine on them, causing them to rot joint by joint. Thus, Tao Hongjing's claim that spiders treat centipede bites aligns with the principle of mutual suppression. Shen Kuo's *Bi Tan* records: When bitten by a bee, a spider chews taro stems and applies the paste to heal the wound. How can spiders now also treat bee and scorpion stings? There is also a record: A person suffered from Gan Huoluan (dry cholera), with fullness preventing vomiting or purging. Swallowing a live spider with legs removed cured him. However, people were unaware, and Person Jia died at that time. Mo woke up, sent someone to verify, and Jia was indeed dead. Later, this method proved effective for dry cholera. Although strange, this aligns with the *Tang Annotation* regarding treating vomiting and cholera, likely correct. Presumably, spiders possess... [Text implies efficacy against cholera].
