[Dingxiang / Syzygium aromaticum]
Properties and Flavors: Warm in nature, pungent in flavor. Non-toxic. Primarily warms the Spleen and Stomach, stops distension and fullness caused by Huoluan (cholera-like syndrome), dissipates various swellings due to Wind-Toxin, treats Chi Gan (gingival caries/ulceration), and has the ability to enhance the aroma of other herbs.
[Shujiao / Zanthoxylum bungeanum]
Properties and Flavors: Warm in nature, pungent in flavor. Toxic. Primarily dispels pathogenic factors causing cough and rebellious Qi, warms the Middle Jiao, expels cold-dampness Bi pain (obstruction syndrome) from bones, joints, skin, and necrotic tissue, directs Qi downward. Long-term consumption prevents graying of hair, lightens the body, and prolongs life.
---
**[Analysis of Dingxiang]**
Dingxiang is warm in nature, inheriting the mild Wood Qi of spring from Heaven, entering the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian. It is pungent and non-toxic, acquiring the pungent Metal flavor of the West from Earth, entering the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian.
Its aroma and flavor are both ascending, belonging to Yang. Dingxiang’s pungency enters the Lung; it is aromatic and warm. The Lung belongs to Taiyin, and the Spleen also belongs to Taiyin. When the Lung is warm, the Taiyin becomes warm, thereby warming the Spleen. The Lung and Large Intestine are exterior-interior partners; the Large Intestine is functionally associated with the Stomach, thus Dingxiang can warm the Spleen and Stomach.
Huoluan (cholera-like syndrome) is a Taiyin Cold-Dampness syndrome. Qi stagnation causes distension, which results from Liver Pathogen overacting on the Spleen-Earth. Dingxiang is pungent and warm, so it can disperse Taiyin Cold-Dampness and calm Jueyin Liver Qi distension, hence it treats this condition.
Wind Qi communicates with the Liver. Various swellings due to Wind-Toxin occur when Wind combines with Dampness, and excessive Dampness leads to edema. Dingxiang’s warm nature can disperse Liver Wind; its pungent flavor can resolve Dampness swelling.
Chi Gan (gingival ulceration) is caused by Damp-Heat generating parasites in the Yangming channel. Taiyin and Yangming form a combined relationship. Dingxiang’s pungent warmth enters Taiyin, allowing Taiyin to assist Yangming in draining Damp-Heat, thus curing Chi Gan.
The phrase "can enhance the aroma of all fragrant herbs" exists because Dingxiang’s pungent-warm aroma possesses the power to stimulate and release other aromas.
**[Formulations using Dingxiang]**
Combined with Baokou (Amomi Fructus Rotundus), Huoxiang (Agastegheris Herba), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Nongpu (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), and Sharen (Amomi Fructus), it treats Cold Huoluan.
Combined with Chenpi and Ginger juice to form pills, it treats pediatric vomiting and diarrhea due to Deficiency-Cold.
Combined with Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) and Ginger juice to form pills, it treats persistent vomiting and diarrhea in children due to Cold-Dampness.

**[Analysis of Shujiao]**
Shujiao is warm in nature, inheriting the warm Wood Qi of spring from Heaven, entering the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian. It is pungent and toxic, acquiring the fierce and potent Metal flavor of the West from Earth, entering the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian.
Its aroma and flavor are both ascending, belonging to Yang.
Regarding its primary effect of "dispelling pathogenic factors causing cough and rebellious Qi": Its warm nature enters the Liver to disperse pathogens; its pungent flavor enters the Lung to direct Qi downward, thereby stopping cough and rebellious Qi.
"Middle" refers to the Taiyin Spleen. Shujiao enters the Lung, which also belongs to Taiyin; if the Lung is warm, the Spleen is also warm.
Bones/joints and skin are governed by the Liver and Lung respectively. Shujiao’s warm nature disperses Cold; its pungent flavor dispels Dampness, thus treating Bi pain in necrotic tissue.
The Lung governs Qi. When the Lung is warm, the descending function of Qi operates normally, hence it directs Qi downward.
Long-term consumption of pungent-warm substances invigorates Blood. Hair is considered the surplus of Blood; thus, abundant blood prevents graying.
Pungent-warm properties tonify Yang. When Yang Qi is abundant, the body feels light and life is prolonged.
**[Formulations using Shujiao]**
Shujiao is stir-fried to remove oil, then pounded to obtain one jin (approx. 500g) of red powder. Fresh Rehmannia root juice is boiled down to one sheng (approx. 200ml). Mixed with the pepper powder to form pills, named "Jiaohong Wan", it treats damage to the Yuan Qi (Original Qi) and extreme exhaustion.
Combined with Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) and vinegar paste to form pills, it treats Sun Xie (diarrhea with undigested food).
(Note: Usage of Jiaomu / Pepper Seeds) Jiaomu is combined with Badou (Crotonis Fructus), Changpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), Songzhi (Pini Resina), and Huangla (Cera Flava) to form suppositories. Inserted into the ear, changed once daily, it is highly effective for treating deafness.
