Nature is cold. Flavor is bitter. Non-toxic. Mainly treats evil qi within the five zang organs, heat qi in the stomach, facial flushing and rhinophyma (telangiectasia of the nose), white leprosy and red leprosy, sores and ulcers.
(Fried until black for use)
Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi) has a cold nature. It inherits the cold water qi of winter from heaven and enters the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian of Hand-Yangming. Its flavor is bitter and non-toxic, acquiring the fire flavor of the south from earth, and enters the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian. Both its nature and flavor are descending, belonging to Yin. "Five Ne" refers to the interior of the five zang organs. The five zang organs belong to Yin, so the evil qi within them is Yang evil. Gardeniae Fructus is bitter and cold, clearing Yang heat, thus treating these conditions. The Stomach belongs to the Yangming channel; heat qi in the stomach is dry-heat qi. Gardeniae Fructus is cold in nature, inheriting the cold water qi of winter, thus eliminating dry-heat. The Heart governs blood, and its luster manifests on the face. Facial redness indicates excessive Heart fire. Bitter flavor clears Heart fire, thus treating facial redness. The nose belongs to the Lung, which corresponds to Metal; Metal's color is white. When Heart fire overacts on Lung metal, the red color of fire causes nasal redness, resulting in rhinophyma. Treatment works by entering the Heart meridian to clear fire. Leprosy is a skin disease resembling numbness. The Bladder governs the exterior. When Heart fire stagnates in the Bladder's cold-water meridian, damp-heat forms leprosy. White represents dampness; red represents fire. Gardeniae Fructus enters the Heart and Bladder meridians; its bitter-cold nature can dry dampness and clear heat, thus treating leprosy. Sores and ulcers all belong to Heart fire; bitter-cold clears Heart fire, thus treating sores and ulcers.
Prescription:
Gardeniae Fructus combined with Morus Cortex (Sangbai Pi), Scutellaria Root (Huangqin), Licorice Root (Gancao), Platycodon Root (Jiegeng), Schisandra Fruit (Wuweizi), and Kudzu Root (Ge Gen). Treats rhinophyma. Combined with Forsythia Fruit (Lianqiao), Ophiopogon Tuber (Maidong), Bamboo Leaves (Zhuye), Juncus Effusus (Dengxin), Coptis Rhizome (Chuanlian), and Licorice Root (Gancao). Clears excess fire in the Heart meridian.
Nature is neutral. Flavor is sweet. Non-toxic. Mainly calms the five zang organs, stabilizes hun and po souls, eliminates demonic evil qi, resolves blood stasis, and unblocks the five types of strangury.
Amber (Hupo) has a neutral nature. It inherits the balanced metal qi of autumn from heaven and enters the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. Its flavor is sweet and non-toxic, acquiring the central earth flavor from earth and entering the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian. Descending qi exceeds ascending qi, belonging to Yin. Its red color specifically enters the Blood level. The five zang organs store Yin essence. If blood stagnates, the five zang organs become unsettled. Amber is sweet and neutral, harmonizing blood, thus calming the five zang organs. What travels with Shen is called Hun; what enters and exits with Jing is called Po. Po is Yin, and Hun is Yang. Amber's neutral nature enters the Lung meridian, where Lung governs Qi; its sweet flavor enters the Spleen meridian, where Spleen governs Blood. Its hard texture has a sedative effect, thus entering Lung and Spleen to stabilize Hun and Po. When Hun and Po are stabilized, Shen Qi remains internal, preventing demonic ghosts from invading, hence it is said to eliminate demons. Neutral nature promotes free flow; sweet flavor moderates the middle, thus resolving blood stasis. Neutral nature enters the Lung meridian, which regulates water passages, thus treating the five types of strangury.
Prescription:
Amber combined with Frankincense (Ruxiang), Myrrh (Moyao), Corydalis Rhizome (Yanhusuo), Drynaria Rhizome (Ganqi - *Note: Text says Ganqi 干漆 usually implies Toosendan or similar, but literally dried lacquer/tree resin, often associated with breaking stasis*), and Turtle Shell (Biejia) ground into powder. Treats postpartum blood dizziness. Combined with Cinnabar (Dansha), Talc (Huashi), Bamboo Leaves (Zhuye), Akebia Caulis (Mutong), and Ophiopogon Tuber (Maidong). Treats urinary retention due to Heart fire.
