[Perilla Fructus / Perilla Caulis] (Zi Su)
The qi is warm. The taste is pungent. It is non-toxic. It primarily directs Qi downward. It eliminates cold in the middle jiao. Its seeds are especially effective.
Perilla Caulis (Zi Su, 紫苏) has a warm qi, inheriting the harmonizing Wood qi of spring from Heaven, and enters the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian. Its taste is pungent and non-toxic, acquiring the Metal taste of the West from Earth, and enters the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian.
Both its qi and taste are ascending, belonging to Yang. The Lung governs Qi and belongs to Metal. When Metal is cold, it cannot execute the descending function. Perilla Caulis is pungent and warm to warm the Lung; when the Lung is warm, it descends, thus directing Qi downward. The Spleen is the Central State of the Taiyin Meridian, and the Lung is also Taiyin. When the Lung is warm, the cold of the Spleen is also eliminated; therefore, it eliminates cold in the middle jiao. Its seeds (Fructus Perillae, Zi Su Zi, 紫苏子) are especially good because the nature of descending is particularly strong in its pungent and warm qi and taste. Its stem (Caulis Perillae, Zi Su Geng, 紫苏梗), being rooted in the earth, naturally tends downward, so its ability to direct Qi downward is especially rapid.
Prescription Applications:
Perilla Caulis combined with Chen Pi (Tangerine Peel, 陈皮) treats Qi rebellion caused by cold invasion. Combined with Ren Shen (Ginseng Root, 人参), it treats Qi rebellion due to deficiency cough. Fructus Perillae combined with Galangal Rhizome (Liang Jiang, 良姜) and Tangerine Peel (Guang Pi, 广皮) made into pills treats wind-dampness podagra. Combined with Coix Seed/Japonica Rice (Jing Mi, 粳米), it treats Qi rebellion with cough and counterflow.
[Allium Fistulosum / Scallion White] (Cong Bai)
The qi is neutral. The taste is pungent. It is non-toxic. Decoction treats chills and fever from Shanghan (Cold Damage). It treats facial and ocular edema from Zhongfeng (Wind Stroke). It can induce sweating.
Scallion White (Cong Bai, 葱白) has a neutral qi, inheriting the cool Metal qi of autumn from Heaven, and enters the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian. Its taste is pungent and non-toxic, acquiring the dry Metal taste of the West from Earth, and enters the Foot Yangming Dry Metal Stomach Meridian. Its qi and taste ascend more than they descend, belonging to Yang. The Taiyang Cold Water Meridian serves as the outer barrier of the human body. When Cold Water is deficient, external pathogens injure it; this disease is named Shanghan.
Shanghan encompasses five types: Wind, Cold, Dampness, Heat, and Warmth. Initially, when the Taiyang meridian is injured, Taiyang disease manifests with chills and fever; therefore, it can be dispersed from the exterior. Scallion White enters the Lung meridian; the Lung combines with the skin and hair. Its pungent taste can disperse, thus treating Shanghan. Chills and fever are exterior pathogens. Wind is a Yang pathogen; Yang pathogens injure the upper part. When Wind prevails, edema occurs. Pungent and neutral properties can disperse Wind, thus treating it. Neutral qi enters the Lung; the Lung combines with the skin and hair. The pungent taste disperses, filling the Stomach Qi and transforming grain essence into sweat; therefore, it can induce sweating.
Prescription Applications:
Scallion White combined with Fresh Ginger (Sheng Jiang, 生姜) treats headache from Shanghan. Combined with Ren Shen (Ginseng Root, 人参), it treats critical symptoms of Yang collapse. Stir-fried and applied hot to the lower abdomen, it treats urinary retention and distension. Crushed and applied externally, it treats bleeding from traumatic wounds.
