味甘而苦,微辛微咸。药气温性,既能升散又能降泄,属于阴中寓阳之品。缪氏认为它主升,属阳,归入足太阳膀胱经。

Weilingxian (Clematis Root):
Its root consists of hundreds of clustered fibrous roots. The longer ones are approximately two chi in length. When fresh, they are yellowish-black; when dried, they become deep black. Commonly known as "Tieji Weilingxian" (Iron-foot Clematis). There are several other varieties.
[Root Fibers]
Its action is penetrating and wandering, entering the root.
The taste is sweet and bitter, slightly pungent and salty. The nature is warm; it can ascend and descend, belonging to Yin containing Yang. Mr. Miu states that it ascends and belongs to Yang, entering the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian.
Tea and noodle soup are contraindicated during use. These foods may only be consumed after the illness is cured and medication stopped.
It treats various wind pathogens that wander without staying in one place; it promotes the free flow of the Five Zang organs and the Twelve Primary Meridians; it removes cold stagnation in the abdomen; it eliminates phlegm-fluid retention in the heart and diaphragm; it treats chronic accumulations forming masses (Zhengjia); hypochondriac masses (Piqi); pus and foul fluids retained in the bladder; cold pain in the lower back and knees; it heals fractures; it expels wind from the Large Intestine; it treats accumulations in the waist, legs, and knees; it treats various cold diseases in the intestines, especially those lasting for years without healing, where taking this herb yields immediate results. (From Su Gong)
Its nature embodies Wind and Fire; wind becomes active with it. In summer, if the pulse reflects its qi transformation, it relates to wind.

Remove the rhizome head (Lu), wash with wine.
Qiancao Gen (Rubia Root):
The taste is sweet, slightly sour and salty. The nature is warm, belonging to Yin within Yin. It enters the Blood aspect of the Hand and Foot-Jueyin Liver and Pericardium meridians, as well as the Hand and Foot-Shaoyin Heart and Kidney meridians.
It treats Cold-Dampness Bi syndrome... Jaundice; unblocks meridians; tonifies the Middle Jiao; treats Heat injuring the Middle; treats Liu Ji (Six Extremes) damaging Heart and Lung; stops hematemesis and hematochezia; stops epistaxis and hematuria; and treats traumatic blood stasis... Dysentery, mental restlessness and heat; and bleeding like chicken liver due to parasitic infection (Chongzhu); deficiency-heat metrorrhagia in women; menstrual stagnation and amenorrhea; draining pus from hemorrhoids, sores, and boils. Decoct with wine and take.
Treats tongue bleeding (Shenu). Bi syndrome is a disease of the vessels and collaterals, while injury to the Middle arises from blood pathology in the meridians progressing to the Zang-Fu organs, damaging their guarding function. Although there are differences in depth, since meridians connect interior and exterior, this herb can treat both. It specializes in entering the Ying (Nutritive) level and moving stagnation. Folk methods for treating amenorrhea in women use a single dose of Qiancao taken with wine, effective within one day. (From Li Shizhen/Binhu)
Qiancao embodies Earth and Water Qi, combined with the Shaoyang Qi of Heaven to generate life. Thus, it can cool healthy blood and invigorate injured blood.
Combined with Dihuang (Rehmannia Root), Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Danggui Shen (Angelica Sinensis Root Stem), Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin), Maogen (Imperata Rhizome), and Tongbian (Child's Urine), it treats hematemesis and epistaxis due to Blood Heat.
Combined with Dihuang, Niuxi (Achyranthes Root), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Diyü (Sanguisorba Root), Shaoyao (Peony Root), and Jingjie (Schizonepeta Spike), it treats intestinal wind bleeding.
With Diyü as an assistant, it is highly effective for treating Hengxuan and Yukou (venereal lymphadenitis).
For treating hematemesis, dry thirst, and detoxification, use Qiangen (Rubia Root), Xiongheidou (Black Soybean, peeled and roasted), and Gancao (Licorice Root) in equal parts, grind into powder, make pills the size of bullet seeds using well water. Take one pill dissolved in warm water per dose.
For women over fifty with persistent menorrhagia, consider it as defeated blood. Use Qiangen (also named Longjiang) 1 liang, Ejiao, Cebaiye (Platycladi Leaf), Zhì Huángqín (Scutellaria Root processed with honey) each 5 qian, Shengdi (Rehmannia Root prepared with wine) 1 liang, and one piece of fetal hair burned to ash. Divide into six doses. Each dose is decocted with one sheng of water until reduced to seven-tenths, then add the hair ash and take.
[Discussion]
Qiangen tastes sweet with slight sourness and saltiness, is red in color and warm in nature, specializing in moving and activating blood. The *Shennong Benjing* treats Cold-Dampness Bi syndrome, precisely because its warmth promotes blood flow...

Heaven and Earth.
Divided above and below the midpoint of the body, can they be mixed together without subtle differentiation?
Therefore, one must examine the origin of Blood transformation. Whether it belongs to Earth-Yin (Liver, Spleen, Kidney) or Heaven-Yin (Heart, Lung, Pericardium). Then clarify how Qi controls Blood. Whether it belongs to Earth-Yang (Gallbladder, Stomach...) or Heaven-Yang (Large Intestine, Small Intestine, Sanjiao).
Blood originates from Earth-Yin and is generated by Heaven-Yin; Qi is generated by Earth-Yang and transformed by Heaven-Yang.
Yang naturally precedes Yin and moves; Blood, originating from Earth-Yin, does so because its substance is Yin.

Those originating from Earth-Yin must also be treated via the transforming agents of Heaven-Yin. Only then treat the root of Earth-Yin origin. Because the transforming agents of Heaven-Yin cannot transform...
The urgency lies in the branch; one cannot abandon the transforming agents of Heaven-Yin to indirectly plan for Earth-Yin origin. ("The transforming agents of Heaven-Yin cannot transform..." sentences are the key to treating blood, representing Yang Deficiency with Yin excess. Cases of Yang Deficiency failing to transform Yin leading to Blood stasis and rebellion are rare and suit Qiangen...
Previously, treatment blamed the root in Yin; subsequently, treatment blames the root in Yang.) If the disease arises from generation by Heaven, no further words are needed.
Mr. Miu points out: Even if blood disorders are present, if accompanied by diarrhea and loss of appetite, do not administer.
