To treat pediatric spleen accumulation and dysentery due to deficiency, with stool containing five colors. Initially caused by vomiting, followed by diarrhea, accompanied by pain in the umbilical and abdominal regions and distension in the hypochondriac region. Due to dampness invasion, there is borborygmus (intestinal rumbling) from deficiency, with pus and blood mixed in the stool, resembling bean juice or clotted blood. The excretion occurs incessantly day and night without control, with reduced food intake and emaciation. It is appropriate to take Da Xiao Zhi Sheng Qian Jin Yin Zi (Great Efficacy Supreme Thousand-Gold Decoction), recorded in *Liang Fang*.
Herbs: Mian Huangqi (Astragali Radix, honey-fried), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Yingsuqiao (Papaveris Pericarpium, fried), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Baishao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Diyu (Sanguisorbae Radix), Chuan Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus, processed and stir-fried), Heidou (Sojae Semen Nigrum, fried), Wumei (Mume Fructus), Huaizao (Jujubae Fructus), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Hezi (Chebulae Fructus, processed, pitted, and weighed).
The above herbs are taken in equal proportions, coarsely crushed. For each dose, take two liang, add one small cup of water, decoct until half a cup remains, filter out the dregs, and administer orally while warm.
Commentary: When the zang-fu organs are deficient and dryness is added, hot dysentery occurs; if it is due to deficiency-cold, cold dysentery occurs. Some cases arise from summer-heat affecting the stomach, causing failure to distinguish water and grain; or from dampness invading, disrupting intestinal and stomach function. Some result from food toxins injuring the spleen and lungs, or from retained cold accumulating in the zang-fu. Some occur because exterior and interior pathogens remain unresolved, or due to alternating cold and heat, or excessive eating, or extreme hunger followed by overeating, or frequent consumption of pickled foods and dried fish. Alternatively, if the mother indulges her palate during pregnancy, sticky substances accumulate over time, blocking qi circulation, leading to worsening and uncontrolled attacks. Ultimately, this is damage to the intestines and stomach, with groaning day and night and frequent dysentery. This formula is suitable, with miraculous efficacy.
To treat pediatric deficiency-dysentery with incessant thirst, use Da Ai Jian Wan (Great Mugwort Decoction Pill), recorded in *Liang Fang*.
Herbs: Da Ai Ye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium, burnt to ash), Gan Ge Fen (Puerariae Radix powder), Hu Fen (Lead Carbonate, stir-fried), Haipiaoxiao (Sepiae Endoconcha), Longchi (Dentis Mamuthi Fossum).
The above herbs are taken in equal amounts, ground into powder, and formed into pills using refined honey, sized like a corn kernel. Each dose consists of one to two pills, ground in water and administered before or after meals.
Commentary: Since the lower jiao is deficient, diarrhea inevitably occurs; exacerbated diarrhea leads to deficiency, resulting in dysentery. As dysentery turns into a deficiency state, the upper jiao becomes excess, and the smooth flow of the three jiao is obstructed, causing thirst. If thirst persists, diarrhea will not cease, nor will dysentery stop. Using cooling herbs to quench thirst is particularly important for treating dysentery. This formula achieves dual benefits: it supports the treatment of dysentery without exacerbating deficiency or generating heat.
To treat pediatric autumn dysentery, known as toxic dysentery, characterized by pure discharge of white mucoid material and abdominal pain, use Bai Bing Zi (White Cake), recorded in *Liang Fang*.
Herbs: Bei Fan (Alumen, dry and clean), Ni Fen (Calomelas, one liang), Bai Mian (Tritici Vulgaris Farina, half a liang), Hu Fen (Lead Carbonate, stir-fried, one liang each).
Mix the above ingredients evenly, knead with water into cakes the size of a coin. Each dose is half a cake, or one cake if large, ground in water and administered before or after meals.
Commentary: In autumn, metal qi is prosperous, causing the mother (earth/spleen-stomach) to be deficient; in summer, fire qi is dry, causing the child (metal/lungs) to be distressed. The five zang and six fu organs follow the four seasons. Thus, autumn dampness injures the spleen and stomach. If toxic pathogens block the stomach, preventing eating, first use Qingfen (Calomelas) to expel toxins, then give Doukou (Cardamomi Fructus) mixed with flour, along with Ji Qing Sheng Shu Yin (Chicken Green Raw-Cooked Drink) to open the appetite and awaken the spleen, leading to recovery.
