To treat infants with sores in the lips and mouth caused by heat in the Heart and Spleen, as well as Mu Kou (whitening of lips and tongue), E Kou (whitening of the tongue surface), Chong She (swelling and hardness under the tongue), and Mu She (swollen and stiff tongue).
All these conditions are due to excess heat in the Heart and Spleen. It is appropriate to apply the following medicine to the soles of the feet, followed by administering Lianqiao Yin (Forsythia Decoction), and continuing to brush the inside of the mouth and tongue with Jin Si Gao (Golden Thread Ointment) for excellent efficacy.
Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu) (any quantity)
Grind the above into a fine powder, mix with strong rice vinegar, and apply to the soles of the feet. Cover with paper and paste to secure; immediate effect is expected.
There is also a condition called "Chong She" (Double Tongue), where a fleshy growth appears on the tongue, about the size of a finger, red and swollen, obstructing eating and suckling. This arises from extreme heat. One should promptly use purgation methods; otherwise, heat toxins may flow to the throat, causing severe swelling and obstruction leading to suffocation and coma. Administer Shufeng San (Wind-Dispersing Powder) for purgation (formula provided earlier).
Shengji San (Flesh-Regenerating Powder) for treating infantile foot swelling with sores and various non-healing wounds:
True Lycii Cortex (Digupi), Myrobalan (Wubeizi), Licorice Root (Gancao) (all raw), Phellodendron Bark (Huangbo) (prepared by stir-frying with bran), Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian) (stir-fried)
Grind the above into a fine powder. Sprinkle dry powder directly onto the sores. If using coarse powder, steep in boiling water, dip to wash the affected area, and after drying, mix with saliva to apply as a poultice.
Formula for treating infantile mouth sores:
Lead Monoxide (Huandan) (1 qian), Raw Honey (Shengmi) (1 liang)
Mix thoroughly, place in a deep bowl, and steam in a steamer until blackened. Use a small amount each time, dip a chicken feather, and brush the inside of the mouth.
Tiannanxing Wan (Arisaema Pill) for treating infants with excessive phlegm, wheezing, rapid breathing, and coughing:
Prepared Arisaema Rhizome (Tiannanxing), Pinellia Tuber (Banxia) (washed seven times in hot water), Alum (Baifan) (calcined, 1 qian each), Realgar (Xionghuang) (finely ground, 1 qian)
Grind the above into a powder. Boil Soap Fruit (Zaojiao) paste as a binder to form pills. Add a little flour paste to aid shaping. Form pills the size of hemp seeds. Take 20–30 pills per dose, washed down with light ginger soup.
Tongguan San (Passage-Opening Powder) for infants whose fontanelle is affected by being blown upon by the mother's breath, causing nasal congestion and inability to suckle:
Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfuzi) (stir-fried, 3 fen), Ligusticum Rhizome (Chuanxiong) (7 fen), Schizonepeta Spike (Jingjie) (4 fen), Bombyx Batryticatus (Baijiangcan) (stir-fried, 3 fen), Asarum Whole Herb (Xixinquan) (2 fen), Pod of Swallowwort (Zhuyazaojiao) (1 fen)
Grind the above into a powder. Take fresh scallion whites, remove roots, pound them, and mix with the medicine to apply to the fontanelle.
Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu) pickled in salt is best. If unavailable, soak in oral salt for one to two days.
Grind the above into a powder, mix with strong rice vinegar, and apply to the head. For adults suffering from carbuncles or sores on the shoulder, this formula yields immediate results.
