薛氏曰∶前证若秋间风邪伤肺,用金沸草散(杂咳嗽);夏间火邪克金,用人参平肺散(杂喘);
君、芎、归、桔梗;若血虚,四物加桑白皮、杏仁、桔梗;肾火上炎,用六味丸加五味子煎服;

The *Yizong Bidu* states: The Lung internally governs Qi and externally controls the skin and hair. If the skin and hair are not dense, Cold Evil will take advantage of this to invade, resulting in cough. In autumn, the Lung is affected; in winter, the Kidney is affected; in spring, the Liver is affected; in summer, the Heart is affected. If the cough persists without cessation, it transmits to the Fu organs. During pregnancy, if coughing persists for a long time, it will damage the Fetus.
Xue Ji (Mr. Xue) said: For the aforementioned conditions, if Wind Evil injures the Lung in autumn, use Jineicao San (Golden Fern Grass Powder); if Fire Evil overcomes Metal (Lung) in summer, use Renshen Pingfei San (Ginseng Lung-Pacifying Powder); if Cold Evil injures the Lung in winter, use Renshen Baidu San (Ginseng Detoxifying Powder); if Wind Evil injures the Lung in spring, use Shensu Yin (Ginseng and Perilla Decoction). If Spleen and Lung Qi are deficient, use Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) plus Chuanxiong, Danggui, and Jiegeng; if Blood is deficient, use Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) plus Sangbaipi, Xingren, and Jiegeng; if Kidney Fire flares upward, use Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) with Wuweizi decocted and taken. If Spleen and Stomach Qi are deficient and injured by Wind-Cold, use Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) plus Sangbaipi, Xingren, and Jiegeng. Generally, since the Lung belongs to Xin Metal and is born from Ji Earth (Spleen Earth), chronic coughs that do not heal are often due to Spleen Earth deficiency failing to generate Lung Qi, leading to loose pores and repeated external evil invasion; or because Lung Qi deficiency fails to generate Kidney Water, causing Yin Fire to flare upward. The treatment method should focus on strengthening Earth and Metal to generate Kidney Water.
One pregnant woman experienced involuntary defecation whenever she coughed. This was due to insufficiency of Lung Qi and depletion of Kidney Qi, failing to maintain control. She was treated with Buzhong Yiqi Tang to cultivate Earth and Metal, and Liuwei Dihuang Wan with Wuweizi to generate Kidney Water, resulting in recovery.
Another pregnant woman suffered from coughing with phlegm surging upward, amounting to about five or six bowls per day, to which various medicines were ineffective. I considered this to be water overflowing and transforming into phlegm. One dose of the ingredients of Liuwei Dihuang Wan and one dose of Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) were used, leading to slight improvement, and after several doses, she became stable.
A pregnant woman developed coughing and expectoration due to anger, accompanied by pain in both hypochondriac regions. This was Liver Fire injuring Lung Metal. She was treated with Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) plus Zhizi, Zhike, Baizhu, and Fuling, resulting in recovery. Subsequently, she desired to vomit, indicating Liver Wood insulting Spleen Earth. She was treated with Liujunzi Tang plus Shengma and Chaihu, resulting in recovery.

Prepare as one dose, decoct with two cups of water and five slices of fresh ginger until one cup remains, and take warm. (Note: Using Baihe and Baishao for wind-congestion cough may not be appropriate unless the cough has been chronic.)
Ziwan Tang (Aster Decoction) treats persistent cough during pregnancy with restless fetus.
Ziwan (Asteris Radix), Tianmendong (Asparagi Radix, heart removed, each 1 liang); Jiegeng (Platycodon Root, half liang); Xingren (Pruni Semen), Sangbaipi (Morus Cortex), Gancao (Licorice Root, each 1.5 qian).
