Xu Zhicai, a famous physician of the Northern Qi Dynasty, stated: In the first month of pregnancy, it is called "Tai Pei" (Fetal Embryo). The diet should be fine and well-cooked; sour soups are easily tolerated. It is advisable to eat barley and avoid fishy or pungent/spicy foods. This is referred to as "Cai Zheng" (Correct Regulation by Xu Zhicai). During the first month, the Foot Jueyin Meridian nourishes the fetus. Acupuncture and moxibustion on this meridian should be avoided (e.g., Daguin [LR1], Xingjian [LR2], Taichong [LR3], Zhongfeng [LR4], Wuli [LR10], Zhongdu [LR8]). The Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian connects internally to the Liver, which governs sinews and blood. At this stage, blood circulation is sluggish; one should avoid strenuous labor, sleep quietly, and avoid fear or anxiety.
In the second month, it is called "Shi Gao" (Beginning of Paste/Fat). Avoid pungent and gamey foods. Reside in a quiet place. The husband should avoid excessive exertion. The mother may experience pain in all joints, marking the initial formation of the fetus. During the second month, the Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian nourishes the fetus. Acupuncture and moxibustion on this meridian should be avoided (e.g., Danqiaoxue [Extra], Yangfu [GB38], Jiexu [GB39], Waiqiu [GB36], Yanglingquan [GB34]). The Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian connects internally to the Gallbladder, which governs essence. At this stage, the fetal essence forms within the uterus; care must be taken to prevent startling or disturbing the fetus.
In the third month, it is called "Shi Tai" (Beginning of Fetus). At this time, the form is not yet fixed, and the fetus transforms according to what the mother sees ("Jian Wu Er Hua"). To conceive a boy, handle bows and arrows; to conceive a girl, play with pearls and gems. To ensure a beautiful child, frequently view jade artifacts; to ensure a virtuous child, sit upright and maintain a pure, empty mind. This is known as "external influence leading to internal response." During the third month, the Hand Jueyin Pericardium Meridian nourishes the fetus. Acupuncture and moxibustion on this meridian should be avoided (e.g., Zhongchong [PC9], Laogong [PC8], Daling [PC7], Neiguan [PC6], Jianshi [PC5], Ximen [PC4], Quze [PC3]). The Hand Jueyin Pericardium Meridian connects internally to the Heart. Avoid sorrow, overthinking, or startling.
In the fourth month, the fetus begins to receive the essence of Water to form blood vessels. The diet should include rice and glutinous rice; soups should include fish and wild goose. This is called "abundant blood and qi," which unifies the senses and unblocks the meridians. During the fourth month, the Hand Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian nourishes the fetus. Acupuncture and moxibustion on this meridian should be avoided (e.g., Guanchong [TE1], Yangchi [TE4], Yemen [TE2], Zhongzhu [TE3], Tianjing [TE10], Quyuan [Extra]). The Hand Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian connects internally to the Sanjiao (Triple Burner). At this stage, the six Fu organs develop in sequence; the body should remain still, the mind peaceful, and the diet regulated.
In the fifth month, the fetus begins to receive the essence of Fire to form vital energy (Qi). Sleep late. Bathe and wash clothes. Live in deep, secluded quarters and wear thick clothing. Inhale morning sunlight to avoid cold evils. Eat rice and wheat; consume beef and mutton soups seasoned with Zhenyu (Evodia) and balanced with the five flavors. This is called "nourishing Qi" to stabilize the five Zang organs. During the fifth month, the Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian nourishes the fetus. Acupuncture and moxibustion on this meridian should be avoided (e.g., Yinbai [SP1], Dabu [SP2], Gongsun [SP4], Shangqiu [SP5], Sanyinjiao [SP6], Lougu [SP7], Yinlingquan [SP9]). The Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian connects internally to the Spleen. At this stage, the fetal limbs are fully formed. Do not become too hungry or too full; avoid dry foods, excessive heat exposure, and fatigue.
In the sixth month, the fetus begins to receive the essence of Metal to form sinews. The body should engage in slight labor, avoiding prolonged stillness. Go outdoors and watch running dogs and galloping horses. Eat meat from raptors and fierce beasts. This is called "altering the interstices and binding sinews to nourish strength," thereby strengthening the back and spine. During the sixth month, the Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian nourishes the fetus. Acupuncture and moxibustion on this meridian should be avoided (e.g., Lidui [ST45], Fenglong [ST40], Yinshi [ST32], Shanglian [ST34], Xialian [ST33], Zusanli [ST36]). The Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian connects internally to the Stomach, governing the mouth and eyes. At this stage, the fetal mouth and eyes are formed. Balance the five flavors, eat sweet and delicious foods, and avoid overeating.
In the seventh month, the fetus begins to receive the essence of Wood to form bones. Labor the body and shake the limbs; do not keep them static. Perform flexion and extension movements to circulate blood and qi. Reside in dry places and avoid cold in the diet. Frequently eat rice and glutinous rice to tighten the interstices. This is called "nourishing bones and hardening teeth." During the seventh month, the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian nourishes the fetus. Acupuncture and moxibustion on this meridian should be avoided (e.g., Shaoshang [LU11], Yuji [LU10], Lieque [LU7], Chize [LU5], Tianfu [LU3]). The Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian connects internally to the Lung, governing skin and hair. At this stage, the fetal skin and hair are formed. Do not speak loudly, cry out, wear thin clothes, bathe, or drink cold beverages.
In the eighth month, the fetus begins to receive the essence of Earth to form skin and flesh. Keep the mind harmonious and breathing calm; do not let the breath reach its extreme. This tightens the interstices and gives luster to the complexion. During the eighth month, the Hand Yangming Large Intestine Meridian nourishes the fetus. Acupuncture and moxibustion on this meridian should be avoided (e.g., Shangyang [LI1], Erjian [LI2], Hegu [LI4], Shanglian [LI13], Xialian [LI11], Quchi [LI11], Jianjing [GB21), Jianyu [LI15]). The Hand Yangming Large Intestine Meridian connects internally to the Large Intestine, governing the nine orifices. At this stage, the fetal nine orifices are formed. Avoid dry foods, irregular eating, and sudden rising from bed.
In the ninth month, the fetus begins to receive the essence of Stone to form hair. The six Fu organs and hundred joints are complete. Drink sweet wine and eat sweet foods. Loosen the belt and wait calmly for delivery. This is called "nourishing hair and developing talent/strength." During the ninth month, the Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian nourishes the fetus. Acupuncture and moxibustion on this meridian should be avoided (e.g., Yongquan [KI1], RanGu [KI2], Taixi [KI3], Jiaoxin [KI8), Zhubin [KI9), Fuliu [KI7]). The Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian connects internally to the Kidney, which governs the connecting threads (meridians). At this stage, the fetal meridians are complete. Avoid damp and cold environments; do not wear heated garments.
In the tenth month, the five Zang organs are complete, and the six Fu organs are fully open. Heaven and Earth Qi are gathered in the Dantian. Thus, the joints and spirit are fully prepared, awaiting the time for birth.
The first month begins with the embryo; the second with paste; the third with the sac; the fourth with the form; the fifth with movement; the sixth with sinews and bones; the seventh with hair; the eighth with organs; the ninth with grain entering the stomach; the tenth with spirits complete. Delivery is imminent. It is appropriate to take "Slippery Fetus Medicine" starting from the eighth month.
