Ezu (Morning Sickness) refers to symptoms such as vomiting, nausea, dizziness, food aversion, and selective eating.
The *Qianjin Fang* states: For women who are physically weak and emaciated, lacking in Qi and Blood, with weak Kidney Qi, or those who have been exposed to wind and consumed excessive cold drinks, leading to phlegm-fluid retention in the epigastrium, they are prone to Ezu when conceiving. The term "wishing to conceive" implies that the woman's menstruation is still regular, her complexion and skin appear normal, but she suffers from a sensation of heaviness and mental restlessness, lacks appetite, and does not know the cause of her ailment. Her pulse is smooth and harmonious, indicating pregnancy. After two months, if menstruation ceases, conception is established. Those suffering from Ezu experience mental restlessness, heavy head and dizzy eyes, heavy limbs, lethargy and reluctance to work, aversion to the smell of food, craving for salty and sour fruits, preferring to lie down more and rise less. This condition is commonly called "aversion to food" (Ezu is colloquially known as "sickness of the child," though some do not suffer from it, regardless of physical strength; this is due to what is colloquially called "favorable fetal Qi"). By the third or fourth month, severe vomiting may occur, beyond self-control. This is because the menstrual blood has ceased, water floods the Zang organs, and their Qi fails to circulate freely, causing mental restlessness, chest oppression, rebellious Qi, and vomiting. When blood vessels are blocked and meridians are obstructed, limbs become heavy; if accompanied by Wind, the head and eyes become dizzy. Upon perceiving these signs, one should immediately take Banxia Fuling Tang (Pinellia and Poria Decoction) for several doses, followed by Fuling Wan (Poria Pills). Once phlegm and fluids are eliminated, appetite returns. With adequate nutrition, the body becomes strong, Qi abundant, and energy sufficient to nourish the fetus, ensuring the mother's health.
The *Daquan* states: Women with weak constitutions during pregnancy are prone to Ezu. Their appearance remains unchanged, pulse is harmonious, but they feel heavy limbs, dizzy head and eyes, selective eating, aversion to food smells, and cravings for salty and sour foods. Severe cases may present with alternating chills and fever (Ezu can also involve chills and fever, which must be noted), mental restlessness, vomiting of phlegm-fluid, and mental confusion with inability to sustain oneself. Chao Yuanfang calls this Ezu, noting variations in severity. Mild cases may not require medication; severe cases must be treated. The *Qianjin Fang* uses Banxia Fuling Tang and Fuling Wan specifically for Ezu. However, these are rarely used recently because Banxia (Pinellia Rhizome) is considered to disturb the fetus. Since the fetus is newly formed, there is concern about miscarriage, so caution is advised. Zhang Zhongjing's *Shanghan Lun* mentions Huanglong Tang, which is essentially Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) without Banxia, designed for pregnancy. Wang Ziheng proposed Baizhu San (Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder); the *Ju Fang* offers Renshen Dingxiang San (Ginseng and Clove Powder); Yang Zhen offered Renshen Jupi Tang (Ginseng and Tangerine Peel Decoction); Qi Shiming offered Xingpi Yin (Spleen-Awakening Drink)—all avoiding Banxia, yet effective.
Li Maoweng stated: If the left pulse is weak and vomiting persists despite various medications, one should take Lixue Guiyuan medicine (Blood-Regulating Return-to-Origin Remedy) to recover. The classic text says, "Absence of Yin leads to vomiting." Xue notes: If the preceding syndrome involves phlegm retention in the middle Jiao, use Erchen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction) with Zhike (Aurantii Fructus); if food stagnation, use Liujunzi Tang (Six-Gentlemen Decoction) with Zhike; if Spleen-Stomach deficiency, use Yigong San (Extraordinary Merit Powder); if Stomach Qi insufficiency, use Renshen Jupi Tang; if accompanied by emotional distress, add Zhike; if chest and hypochondriac oppression, add Sugen (Perilla Stem); if hypochondriac pain, add Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix); if reduced appetite, use Liujunzi Tang with Zisu (Perilla Leaf) and Zhike; if dizziness and fatigue, use Liujunzi Tang; if Spleen-Stomach deficiency with vomiting and anorexia, use Banxia Fuling Tang. Banxia is the primary herb for strengthening Spleen Qi and resolving phlegm-stagnation. For Spleen-Stomach deficiency with vomiting, phlegm-fluid obstruction, reduced appetite, and fetal instability, Banxia Fuling Tang with doubled Baizhu is essential. However, Banxia, Baizhu, Fuling, Chenpi, and Sharen are effective in calming fetal Qi and strengthening the Spleen-Stomach; I have verified their efficacy through frequent use.
Banxia Fuling Tang treats pregnancy Ezu, vomiting with mental restlessness, dizziness, aversion to food smells, craving for sour/salty flavors, preference for lying down, joint pain, emaciation with phlegm, and unstable pregnancy.
Ingredients: Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, washed seven times in boiling water, stir-fried with ginger juice until yellow), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (each 1 qian), Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) (remove if chest fullness exists), Xuanjinhua (Inulae Flos) (omit if no phlegm), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 0.5 qian).
Preparation: Coarsely crush, add three slices of fresh ginger, decoct in water, take on an empty stomach. Also take Fuling Wan afterwards. The *Qianjin Fang* omits Xuanjinhua but includes Ziye (Perillae Folium) and Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma). Add Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) for heat. For external heat with thirst and mouth ulcers, remove Chenpi and Xixin, add Qianhu (Peucedani Radix) and Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) (each 0.75 qian). For cold abdomen with diarrhea, remove Dihu, add Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex) fried (0.5 qian). Note: Internal heat differs from external pathogenic heat; fried Guixin does not induce abortion but is unsuitable unless true cold-abdomen with diarrhea exists. For deficient heat in the Stomach with constipation and dark scanty urine, remove Dihu, add Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (0.75 qian) and Huangqin (1 qian). (Adding Dahuang constitutes a different case.)
Chenpi Banxia Tang treats pregnancy with insufficient Qi and Blood, where fetal Qi rises and disturbs Stomach Qi, causing Ezu, vomiting, and anorexia.
Ingredients: Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, white pith removed, stir-fried with salt water), Fuling (Poria), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, processed) (each 1 qian), Ziqin (Scutellariae Radix, stir-fried with light ginger juice), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus, bran-fried), Zisu (Perillae Folium) (each 0.8 fen), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried) (0.5 fen).
Preparation: Cut into pieces, one dose, add three slices of fresh ginger, one cup of water, decoct to 70%, take warm after meals.
Xuanjinhua Tang treats fetal instability between the sixth and seventh months of pregnancy, and also treats Ezu. (Tonifies Spleen, benefits Qi, moves phlegm-fluids.)
Ingredients: Xuanjinhua (Inulae Flos) (0.5 qian), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Fuling (Poria) (each 1.5 qian), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) (each 1 qian).
Preparation: Coarsely crush, one dose, decoct in water, take warm before meals.
Suosha Erchen Tang treats pregnancy with Spleen-Stomach weakness, indigestion, and persistent vomiting. (This formula possesses the subtlety of acrid dispersion and sour astringency.)
Ingredients: Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, white pith removed), Sharen (Amomi Fructus Rotundus, fried) (each 1 qian), BaiFuling (Poria), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried) (0.5 fen).
Preparation: Add three slices of fresh ginger, one jujube, and a little Wumei (Mume Fructus) flesh, decoct in water, take one to two doses, then take Fuling Wan.
Renshen Jusi San treats pregnancy Ezu, vomiting of phlegm-fluid, anorexia, and heart-deficiency with mental restlessness. (Focuses on heart-deficiency restlessness, hence using Maidong and Zhuru.)
