However, according to the theory of holographic Traditional Chinese Medicine (as mentioned above), one can observe the deficiency or excess of the entire body. Under normal circumstances, calculated by the physician's respiration, four beats per breath cycle (five beats with a leap year adjustment) constitute a Huan Mai (Slow/Relaxed Pulse). Each beat is called one "Zhi" (unit of pulse beat). This Zhi connects to the next; the beginning of this Zhi is called "Lai" (Coming), and the end is called "Qu" (Going). One Lai and one Qu complete one pulse cycle. What does "Lai Sheng Qu Shuai" (Strong Coming, Weak Going) mean? "Lai" refers to the heart beating and pumping blood to all parts of the body; "Qu" refers to the heart drawing back the ejected blood. "Lai Sheng Qu Shuai" means that cardiac function is intact, but there is an obstacle in peripheral blood circulation.
Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst Syndrome / Diabetes Mellitus)
Xiao Ke is a difficult and complicated disease with multifactorial causes. Differentiation of symptoms and signs (Bian Zheng) is key. Establishing treatment principles should not be rigidly bound by textbooks but should seek the experience of ancient masters. Zheng Qin'an, a representative of the Fire Spirit School, had far-sighted views on this. The Tang family branch of the Fire Spirit School has many verifications, and the effects are extraordinary. This is recorded below, along with my own experience.
Zheng Qin'an on Xiao Ke
What is the strange cause of the Three Xiao syndromes (Upper, Middle, and Lower Wasting-Thirst)? Xiao syndromes arise from the Jueyin Liver Meridian. Wind-Wood governs the Qi. Because Jueyin contains Wood below and Fire above, wind and fire fan each other, thus generating various Xiao Ke syndromes. "Xiao" means rapid transformation/consumption, like a candle before the wind, easily turning to ash. Various medical texts call excessive thirst and drinking "Upper Xiao," attributing it to Heart Pericardium Fire carrying Liver Wind to attack Lung Metal. Lung Metal is constrained, unable to nourish the source of transformation. The sea dries up, water evaporates, and it cannot rise. Thus, it begs for external water aid, resulting in excessive thirst and drinking. Ancients used Ren Shen Bai Hu Tang (Ginseng and White Tiger Decoction) to save it. Heart Pericardium Fire carrying Liver Wind attacks Stomach Earth. Wind and fire fan each other in the Stomach; food enters and is digested rapidly like a turning wheel, leading to easy hunger after eating. This is "Middle Xiao," treated with Tiao Wei Cheng Qi Tang (Regulate the Stomach and Direct Downward Decoction). Heart Pericardium Fire carrying Liver Wind stirs the "Sea Water" (Kidney Water). Kidney Qi fails to secure and hold, resulting in drinking one part and urinating two parts. This is "Lower Xiao," treated with large doses of Mai Wei Di Huang Wan (Lily Seed and Schisandra Rehmannia Pill). These are formulas targeting the syndrome, and their methods can be followed. Furthermore, the primordial true Fire (Ming Men Fire) floating upward becomes Upper Xiao; floating in the middle becomes Middle Xiao; floating downward becomes Lower Xiao. In these cases, differentiate using the诀 for identifying Yang Deficiency. The method should guide the dragon back to the sea (guide fire back to its source), such as using Qian Yang Dan (Submerge Yang Pill), Feng Sui Dan (Seal Marrow Pill), or Si Ni Tang (Four Counterflow Decoction) and Bai Tong Tang (White Pass Decoction) as appropriate. Investigating this disease, wind and fire are the root. Jueyin Wind-Wood is below, Jueyin Heart Pericardium is above. Wind borrows the power of fire, and fire borrows the momentum of wind, penetrating from top to bottom, giving rise to Xiao syndromes. Treat only the fire, and when the fire extinguishes, the wind also extinguishes; treat only the wind, and when the wind scatters, the fire also perishes. Pushing to the extreme, wind is Qi, and Qi is Fire. Unifying them under one "Fire" character suffices, or summarizing them under one "Wind" character also works. The character "Wind" should be viewed flexibly. The six Qi of a year are six Winds. Buddhism regards the Wind Wheel as governing the great world. A person's inhalation and exhalation is Wind. Without Wind, a person dies. Living people have Wind just as fish have living water; a fish separated from water dies instantly. Scholars must understand this.
Treatment Cases of Xiao Ke:
Case 1: A female patient was hospitalized for pneumonia for one month. After discharge, she experienced thirst, clear and frequent urination, dry constipation, and sallow complexion. Western medicine diagnosed diabetes. She sought my treatment. Based on her fatigue, sallow complexion, thirst, white and dry tongue coating lacking fluid, frequent urination, and dry constipation, I diagnosed Qi and Yin Deficiency. I prescribed: Sheng Shai Shen (Raw Sun-Dried Ginseng) 10g, Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber) 30g, Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Berry) 10g, five doses, decocted in water and taken orally. At the second visit, thirst decreased, and bowel movements occurred once daily. Efficacy was maintained without changing the formula; ten additional doses of the original formula were taken consecutively. Later, her son informed me that she was completely cured.
Note: In the prescription, I used Sheng Shai Shen (Raw Sun-Dried Ginseng). Sheng Shai Shen is bitter, sweet, and slightly cold, thus having the effect of tonifying Qi and generating fluids. Hong Shen (Red Ginseng) has undergone processing, removing all cold properties, and thus no longer has the effect of generating fluids and quenching thirst.
Case 2: Another elderly woman had been taking Western hypoglycemic drugs for years. She suffered from thirst, dry throat, dry eyes, white and dry tongue coating, frequent urination, blood glucose of 17 mmol/L, and pain in the soles of her feet. Based on the syndrome, I diagnosed Kidney Yang Deficiency and Fluid Deficiency causing tendon spasms. Prescription: Dan Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite Root) 30g, Sheng Bai Shao (Raw White Peony Root) 60g, Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark) 30g, Gan Cao (Licorice Root) 30g, Sheng Shan Yao (Chinese Yam Rhizome) 30g, Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome) 6g. All ingredients were ground into powder, divided into sixty days' supply, taken twice daily. After medication, she reported that all symptoms disappeared, and blood glucose dropped to 10 mmol/L.
Brief Discussion on Treating Disease and the Relationship between Root and Branch
Differentiating disease and treating it requires attention to the root and branch. Yin-Yang constitution is the root; disease is the branch (This is the essence of folk TCM, an eternal truth. Reversing root and branch leads to endless troubles). For example, consider a common cold: Individuals with Yang Deficiency constitution generally do not develop fever after catching a cold, or if they do, it is rarely high fever. They may have runny clear nose, cough, etc. Consider this case: a child with recurrent respiratory infections, constipation, cough, fever, and sniffing (actually running clear nose). If following the Warm Disease School, one would use a large amount of bitter-cold herbs. Clinical symptoms might alleviate (some say it works well), but over time, it leads to a state where Yang Qi declines day by day, Yin Qi increases day by day, resulting in lingering and unhealing conditions.
Common Cold
For every degree of fever, there is a corresponding amount of Yang Qi. People with weak constitutions generally do not develop fever when catching a cold; even if they do, it is not high fever. People fear fever; upon fever onset, they use antipyretics. Little do they know that what they are reducing is the life-generating Qi. The correct treatment method is to clearly differentiate Yin and Yang syndromes. Yin Syndrome: Loose stools, clear and long urine, runny clear nose, cough, aversion to cold, nasal congestion with heavy voice. Medication follows Six Meridian differentiation: Ma Huang Tang (Ephedra Decoction), Gui Zhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction), Xiao Qing Long Tang (Minor Green Dragon Decoction), Ma Huang Fu Zi Xi Xin Tang (Ephedra, Aconite, and Asarum Decoction), Si Ni Tang (Four Counterflow Decoction), etc., are correct formulas. Yang Syndrome: Fever, thirst, preference for cold drinks, dry constipation, yellow and red urine, hot breath/nasal passage. Medication follows Six Meridian differentiation: Ma Xing Shi Gan Tang (Ephedra, Apricot Kernel, Gypsum, and Licorice Decoction), San Cheng Qi Tang (Three Direct-Downward Decoctions), San Huang Shi Gao Tang (Three Yellows and Gypsum Decoction), etc. Alternating chills and fever, bitter taste in mouth, dizzy vision, disease in Shaoyang: Use Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction).
Why does Spleen Yang Deficiency cause the Liver to suffer?
Answer: The ancients said, "Seeing Liver disease, knowing it transmits to the Spleen, one should first strengthen the Spleen." The Spleen is the official of transportation and transformation. Spleen Yang Deficiency leads to poor transportation. Food enters the Stomach; essences go to the Small Intestine, and dregs to the Large Intestine. Insufficient absorption of essences leads to insufficient generation of Liver Blood. Poor conduction of dregs leads to toxins returning to the Liver, increasing the Liver's burden. Would the Liver not suffer? My father often told me, "One who can reverse the Five Elements is a celestial being among humans." Originally, Liver Wood controls Spleen Earth. Now, Spleen Earth disease causes pathogenic factors to inversely control Liver Wood.
Discussing Fullness and Obstruction from the Hexagram Pi (Obstruction)
The human body involves only Water and Fire. When Water and Fire interact harmoniously (Ji Ji), there are no chronic diseases. The hexagram Pi consists of Qian (Heaven) above and Kun (Earth) below. Qian represents the Lung (the canopy), meaning Yang Qi is above. Kun represents the Spleen (extreme Yin), meaning Yin Qi is below. The two Qi fail to interact. Taiyin Spleen and Yangming Stomach are obstructed by Cold-Dampness. Clear Qi (light and pure Yang Qi) does not ascend, and turbid Qi does not descend, leading to epigastric and abdominal fullness and loose stools. This is what the Nei Jing says: "Turbid Qi remaining above generates bloating; Clear Qi sinking below generates incomplete digestion diarrhea." Clinically, one may see cold pain in the umbilicus, no thirst, inability to eat, lack of hunger, cold Ming Men (Gate of Life), susceptibility to colds, and no fever after catching a cold. In such cases, use hot (Yang) herbs. Use large amounts of Ginger and Aconite freely. Stop medication when stool forms. This is the true rule of medication.
Kan and Li (Heart and Kidney)
Heart and Kidney are the foundation of human life. The sixty-four hexagrams are formed by overlapping the eight trigrams. Anyone who has studied the Yi Jing (Book of Changes) knows this mantra: Li is empty in the center, Kan is full in the center. This means Li (Fire) has two Yang lines outside (top and bottom) representing Qi in the human body, and one Yin line in the middle. Its image is Fire, corresponding to the Heart in humans, governing Qi controlling Blood, and the eyes. Kan (Water) has two Yin lines outside representing Blood in the human body, and one Yang line in the middle. Its image is Water, corresponding to the Kidney in humans, governing Blood, and Qi carried by Blood. Extracting the Yang line from Kan and filling the Yin space in Li constitutes the Qian hexagram, consisting entirely of three Yang lines. These three Yang lines represent Qi, specifically vigorous Yang Qi. Qian signifies health/vigor. The interaction and balance of Kan and Li (Water-Fire harmony) is the state of being disease-free. Therefore, Mr. Zheng Qin'an highly valued Human Yang Qi. Yang Qi is vital Qi. Viewing from the Kan hexagram, it is Yin outside and Yang inside. To keep this Yang Qi continuously generated, there is no other way but to break Yin (Cold) to preserve Yin Essence (True Yin) and return Yang Qi. This is precisely why Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger), Fu Zi (Aconite), Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig), and Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark) are extensively used clinically. Many ask me for introductory TCM materials; I always recommend studying the Yi Jing first. Learning the Yi Jing teaches the simple method of healing. The Great Way is extremely simple, which is derived from here.
Chengkong on Yin and Yang
The Yi Jing states that Taiji is "Qi," which generates Two Modes (Yin and Yang). Initially, Yin meant the Moon, and Yang meant the Sun. Simply put: Yin is Cold, Yang is Heat. Qian is Pure Yang. The Tuan Zhuan of Qian says: "Great is the Creative Power! All things begin through it, and it commands Heaven." Kun is Pure Yin. The Tuan Zhuan of Kun says: "Great is the Receptive Power! All things grow through it, and it follows and receives Heaven." The interaction of Qian and Kun generates six children: Zhen, Kan, Gen (three sons); Xun, Li, Dui (three daughters). From this, we see that Qian Yang commands Kun Yin. The commanding role of Yang over Yin is also called "Yu" (driving/controlling). When Yin is abundant, Yang declines. Yin Syndrome (Yang Deficiency): Mild cases involve coldness, slippery tongue coating, blue-white face, clear and long urine, loose stools, and thirst preferring hot soup. Severe cases involve floating upward, also called Dai Yang Syndrome (Floating Yang). Treatment: Greatly tonify the Yang within Kan (Primordial Yang). Fu Zi and Gan Jiang are fierce generals. Use Rou Gui to guide fire back to its source. Use Gan Cao Tang (Licorice Decoction) to cultivate fire and retain Yang. If Yin-Cold penetrates to the marrow, Xi Xin (Asarum) alone has strong effects.
Winter Delicacy: Ginger, Radish, and Tofu Soup
Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) generates fluids, quenches thirst, warms the Stomach, disperses Cold, and dissipates trapped Cold in the Taiyang. Luo Bo (Radish) unblocks the bowels and guides out turbid Qi. Tofu is rich in protein and trace elements. Especially, magnesium in brine tofu can whiten the skin. Cut radish into strips, ginger into thin slices, and tofu into blocks. First, heat peanut oil, then stir-fry ginger, radish, and appropriate salt. Finally, add tofu blocks and water to boil. The resulting soup is white, tender, and fragrant, truly a delicious delicacy.
Hepatitis B
Many turn pale at the mention of the liver. China is known as a Hepatitis B country. Why do many Hepatitis B virus carriers never develop symptoms in their lifetime, while others die quickly upon discovery? The reason is one: the more you fear death, the faster you die; the more Western medicine treats, the faster you die. Why? Because the Liver itself is a detoxification organ. Western medicine has not recognized the cause of viral occurrence. Although they claim specific temperatures and high-pressure durations are needed to neutralize the virus, without understanding TCM concepts of Yin-Yang, Exterior-Interior, Cold-Heat, treatment is impossible. From the perspective of folk TCM, Hepatitis B also falls under Yin-Yang differentiation. Those attentive will find that late-stage Hepatitis B patients all have abdominal distension, inability to eat, ascites, diarrhea, dark complexion, clear and long urine, and aversion to cold. Is this not obvious? TCM classifies this as a Yin Syndrome. How is it acquired? External contraction of Wind-Cold transmits internally via meridians. Upon reaching the Shaoyang Meridian, it affects the Gallbladder. Bile secretion is impaired. What is bile for? Detoxification. The Gallbladder and Liver are exterior-interior partners. Deep transmission reaches the Jueyin Liver. Unclean diet introduces toxins via the mouth. Cold and toxin bind together, causing Liver disease. If Cold Evil does not transmit deeply to Shaoyin, and the Kidney Meridian is not affected, Kidney Qi connects upward to the Liver. Liver viruses will self-heal. If Cold Evil does not reach Taiyin Spleen Meridian directly, and Spleen Yang is sufficient to transform Cold-Dampness, Liver disease will also self-heal. Many cases of Hepatitis B self-healing without treatment are due to this situation. Thus, transmission through the Six Meridians is also a pathway for viral invasion.
What phenomena accelerate the speed of viral invasion? Most people now know to use Western antipyretics and antibiotics for colds, choosing expensive ones over cheap ones, believing more expensive means more toxic. Antipyretics reduce Human Yang Qi. For every degree of fever, there is a corresponding amount of Yang Qi.
Antibiotics are bitter-cold herbs, which also damage Human Yang Qi. Humans live by Yang Qi; without Yang Qi, a human is a corpse. A simple Taiyang Syndrome is made complex by Western medicine. Using Chinese herbs is simple, involving only a few decoctions. However, Western treatment leads to a series of transformed syndromes. Are Hepatitis B and Leukemia not caused this way?
How to treat Hepatitis B?
First, find the cause. It undoubtedly belongs to Yin Syndrome. Medication: Warm-hot herbs to warm the Spleen, scatter Cold, awaken the Spleen, open the appetite, return Yang, and transform Qi. How to prevent it? TCM speaks of preventing disease before it arises. First, diet: Do not overconsume cold-cooling foods, so the Spleen and Stomach remain robust, protecting the Post-Heaven foundation. Do not labor excessively, so Essence and Qi are not leaked, protecting the Pre-Heaven foundation. For external contraction diseases, do not use Western medicine. Seek folk TCM practitioners for Six Meridian differentiation and treat according to the meridian.
Simple Treatment Method for Frostbite
The limbs are the domains of the Liver Meridian. The dorsum of the hand (foot) and the dorsal aspect of the fingers (toes) are traversed by Yang Meridians. If the Stomach Meridian has pathogenic Heat, collaterals become engorged. Upon encountering Cold, collaterals close. Initially, swelling occurs. Long-term stagnation leads to ulceration, difficult healing, and dripping pus, causing dread. Since we know it is Heat in the Stomach Meridian, clearing it suffices. But how to resolve the stagnant Heat on the dorsum of hands and fingers? For pathogens on the exterior, induce sweating to expel them.
Prescription
Before frostbite ulcerates, apply sliced fresh ginger externally as needed. After ulceration, apply raw Da Huang (Rhubarb Rhizome) powder externally to the lesion. Within two to three days, the ulcer surface will dry and regenerate tissue.
Internal Formula:
Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) 50g, Sheng Da Huang (Raw Rhubarb Rhizome) 10g (crushed). Steep in boiling water and drink as needed. This can both treat and prevent.
Cysts
Western medicine only knows to cut them out. TCM treatment is simpler because TCM understands the pathogenesis: Phlegm carrying Stasis forms cysts. Cysts can cause various lesions; for instance, a type of hypertension is caused by renal cysts. TCM treats the root. Once the cyst is eliminated, hypertension will self-heal. Prescription: Kong Xian Dan (Control Saliva Pill). Formula composition: Vinegar-processed Gan Sui (Kansui Root), Vinegar-processed Da Ji (Spurge Root), and Bai Jie Zi (Mustard Seed) in equal parts, ground into powder and filled into capsules. Each capsule is approximately 0.35g. Take two to four capsules per dose, stopping when diarrhea occurs. Generally, over ten capsules cure renal cysts, and hypertension will also self-heal.
Brief Discussion on Hypertension
Blood vessels are "tubes," and the intestines are also "tubes." The stomach is the expanded part of the digestive tract, a "thick tube." If these gastrointestinal tubes are unblocked (smooth bowel movements), blood vessels naturally unblock. If blood vessels are unblocked, blood pressure returns to normal. Western medicine only knows diuresis, lowering blood pressure, and hydration (IV fluids), yielding no results. The reason lies in the failure to clarify the mechanism. The Large Intestine and Lung are exterior-interior partners. Lung Meridian pathology: Taiyang Cold-Water (External contraction of Wind-Cold binding the Lung) closes the skin pores, causing acute constriction of capillaries. Without Six Meridian differentiation treatment, the cause remains. Over time, capillaries harden (Cold entering collaterals). If Cold further penetrates Ying-Blood (large vessels), it causes deep vein blockage. Transformed syndromes arise. If it penetrates further to the bone marrow, it causes lower Cold and upper Heat, interior Cold and exterior Heat, with Yang Qi blocked upward and outward. If one cannot differentiate Yin-Yang, one might mistakenly diagnose Yin Deficiency with Yang Hyperactivity and use Tian Ma Gou Teng Yin (Gastrodia and Uncaria Decoction) ineffectively. Therefore, clinically, hypertensive patients rarely have yellow urine; it is generally clear and long, illustrating this point. Thus, differentiated treatment, especially Six Meridian differentiation, is the only shortcut to treating hypertension. Opening the interstices, cleansing the gastrointestinal tract, and warming the lower origin become the main methods for treating hypertension. Smooth bowel movements indicate the gastrointestinal tract is clean. A clean gastrointestinal tract means pure blood in the vessels. Why fear hyperlipidemia? Western medicine only names a series of conditions without effective treatments. When Spleen Yang and Kidney Yang are sufficient, Cold Evil has no entry, and blood flow is gentle. We can observe that children rarely suffer from hypertension; if they do, it is due to diet. We can see that Buddhist monks do not suffer from hypertension because they eat light diets, maintain tranquility and emptiness, do not labor excessively, avoid sexual indulgence, have sufficient Yin Essence, distributed Yang Qi, and robust Wei Qi (Defensive Qi).
Brief Discussion on Kidney Disease
The Kidney belongs to the Shaoyin Meridian in the Six Meridians and forms Ji Ji (Interaction) with the Heart. Extracting Yang from "Kan" to fill the Yin in "Li" constitutes "Qian." Qian signifies vigor. All five Zang and six Fu organs exist within Qi transformation. Vigorous and disease-free. However, when external Wind-Cold transmits internally via the Taiyang Meridian, if Spleen Yang is sufficient, the body's own strength can resist external pathogens. If Spleen Yang is deficient, Yin-Cold transmits via the Taiyin Meridian to the Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. At this point, Kidney disease arises, and so does Heart disease. Facial and eye edema, shortness of breath, and fatigue occur. Western medicine uses antibiotics at this stage, which may temporarily reduce swelling, but the cause remains. Next, proteinuria appears. Why? Kidney Yang Deficiency leads to failure of storage and consolidation. Therefore, in late-stage kidney disease, both Taiyin and Shaoyin are diseased. Affected Zang-Fu: Lung, Spleen, Kidney. Given this, kidney disease treatment also adheres to Six Meridian differentiation and Yin-Yang differentiation. Humans establish extremes with Water and Fire. Ji Ji means healthy Kidneys; Wei Ji (Not yet completed) means Kidney disease. More Water and less Fire (Yin Excess and Yang Decline, i.e., Yin Syndrome) leads to Kidney Yin Syndrome, transforming from Yin to Cold. More Fire and less Water (Yin Deficiency with Fire Hyperactivity) leads to Yang Syndrome, i.e., Shaoyin disease transforming from Yang to Heat, which is Damp-Heat.
