(The Liver generates blood and qi. Wood favors smooth flow. The Liver uses astringency as purging and dispersion as tonifying. Ministerial Fire resides in the Liver and Gallbladder; there is only purging and no tonifying for it. Purging heat is equivalent to tonifying. The Liver prefers coolness, the Gallbladder prefers warmth. However, the Gallbladder attaches to the Liver; when one moves, the other follows, so they are treated together. The Liver is also treated together with the Heart and Kidney. This plaster can be used in conjunction with Qingyang Gao, Jin Xian Gao, and Ziyin Gao. For treating Liver Wind, combine with Qingyang Gao; for treating Liver Qi stagnation, combine with Jin Xian Gao; for treating Liver Fire, combine with Ziyin Gao.)
Treating Liver Meridian Blood Deficiency.
Use Qingyang Gao.
Symptoms include: Cyan complexion and sour taste in the mouth. (Cyan is the color of the Liver, sour is the flavor of the Liver.) Alternating chills and fever. (Shaoyang is located between the exterior and interior; malaria is considered an accumulation of the Liver, so combine Huanglian and Chaihu, and use Jin Xian Gao.) Frequent fright and insomnia. (The Liver stores the Hun/Soul, so combine Lingjiaojiao (Antelope Horn) etc., and use Qingxin Gao.) Irritability. (Liver dryness, so combine Danggui, Gualou, Honghua etc.) Hematemesis. (Violent anger injures the Liver, causing failure to store blood.) Epigastric stuffiness. (Liver Qi stagnation, so combine Xiaoyao San, Liu Yu Tang, Yulian Wan etc., and use Jin Xian Gao.) Pain in the hypochondrium and beside the breasts. (These are locations of the Liver meridian. Liver accumulation causing pain under the left rib radiating to the lower abdomen is named Feiqi, combine Jin Xian Gao.) Abdominal pain. (Earth is overcome by Wood, combine Jin Xian Gao.) Lower abdominal pain. (The lower abdomen is also a location of the Liver; if blood stasis accumulates below, it causes pain; in women, this manifests as blood masses etc.) Swelling and pain of the genitals. (The Liver meridian winds around the genitalia.) Pediatric convulsions. (Divided into false and true convulsions. False convulsions present with spasms, opisthotonos, strabismus but tight jaw, no phlegm, and heat in qi; do not diagnose as wind-strike, suspect wind-cold, food retention, or smallpox/rubella. True convulsions involve tidal fever and convulsions, constituting acute wind-strike. The Heart governs fright, the Liver governs wind. If occurring during Si, Wu, Wei hours (Heart time), use Daochi San (Shengdi, Mutong, Gancao, Danzhuye equal parts decocted) or Liangjing Wan (Longdancao, Fangfeng, Qingdai 3 qian, Gouteng 3 qian, Huanglian 0.5 qian, pills made with Niuhuang, Bingpian, Shexiang, dissolved in Yinjin Tang). If occurring during Yin, Mao, Chen hours (Liver time), use Xieqing Wan (Qianghuo, Dahuang, Chuanxiong, Shanzhiren, Longdancao, Danggui, Fangfeng honey pills, dissolved in Zhuye Tang). If occurring during Shen, You, Xu hours (Lung time), use Bupi Yihuang San (Qingpi, Chenpi, Dingxiang) combined with Xieqing Wan to treat the Liver and Daochi San to treat the Heart. If occurring during Hai, Zi, Chou hours (Kidney time), also use Bupi Yihuang San combined with Daochi San and Liangjing Wan to treat the Heart. Furthermore, acute wind-strike arises from heat generating in the Heart; excessive heat generates wind, which belongs to the Liver. This is excess Yang and deficient Yin. Use Lijing Wan (Tianzhuhuang 3 qian, Qingfen, Qingdai 1 qian, Heiqiu head powder 5 qian, honey pills, mixed with Bohe Tang). If heat, thirst, convulsions, and profuse phlegm indicate critical condition, use Tian Nanxing, Ban Xiashen processed with Ya Zao, Mingfan, Shengjiang juice (1 liang each), Huafen 2 liang, Yuanmingfen 5 qian, Pengsha 3 qian, Xionghuang 0.5 fen, Shexiang 0.4 fen, Gancao raw powder, water pills, coated with Zhu Yi and Jinbo, taken with Jiangpi and Dengxin Tang. Or use Mengshi alone, taken with Muxiang Tang. The above medicines can all be rubbed on the chest and back, combined with Qingyang Gao, Qingxin Gao, and Ziyin Gao for application.) Liver Gan (Pediatric malnutrition due to Liver). (Consuming fatty foods causes internal heat; consuming sweet foods causes middle jiao fullness. After age sixteen, this is called Lao disease. Liver Gan presents with cyan complexion, white membrane on eyes, watery diarrhea with cyan tint, or bloody stool. Pediatric Gan syndromes are divided by five zang organs, with Liver involvement being common. All Gan syndromes, regardless of cold/heat or new/old, are primarily treated with Pi Gan Jisheng Wan. Ingredients: Dangshen, Huanglian, Ganchansu 3 qian each; Chuanxiong, Danggui, Wulingzhi, Chenpi, Qingpi (vinegar fried), Ezhu, Wei Muxiang, Zhen Lvhua (wine steamed), Sharen 2 qian each. Pills made with Gongzhu Danzhi. Modifications for five zang: For Liver Gan, remove Ezhu, Sharen, Chenpi, Muxiang; add Longdancao, Zhiren, Fangfeng, Tianma, Chantui 2 qian each, Qingdai 0.5 qian. Can be rubbed on chest/back, then apply plaster. See pediatric texts for details.) External symptoms: Neck nodules. (Caused by fire hyperactivity and tendon contraction, combine Yuntai Gao.) Head and eye conditions apply to Taiyang acupoints. Ear conditions apply to Ermen acupoint. Internal conditions apply to Chest area, bilateral hypochondriac Back (Ganshu BL18), above and below Umbilicus. Others apply to the affected area. Add Dingzi (plaster ingots) ground with vinegar for application.
Biejia (Turtle Shell) one piece. Soak and boil in 3 jin of sesame oil for later use.
Prescription: Chaihu (4 liang), Huanglian, Longdancao (3 liang each); Yuan Shen (Scrophularia Root), Shengdi (Rehmannia Root), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Baishao (White Peony Root), Yujin (Curcuma Longa Rhizome), Danpi (Moutan Cortex), Digupi (Lycium Bark), Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Dan Nanting (Arisaema with Bile, 2 liang each); Bohe (Mint), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Zhimu (Anemarrhena Rhizome), Beimu (Fritillaria Bulb), Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark), Jingjie Sui (Schizonepeta Spike), Tianma (Gastrodia Rhizome), Qinjiao (Gentiana Macrophylla Root), Puhuang (Typha Pollen), Zhike (Bitter Orange Fruit), Lianqiao (Forsythia Fruit), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber), Huafen (Trichosanthes Root), Hei Shanzhi (Gardenia Fruit), Xiangfu (Cyperus Rhizome), Chishao (Red Peony Root), Qianhu (Peucedanum Root), Juhong (Citrus Reticulata Red Peel), Qingpi (Green Tangerine Peel), Gualou Ren (Trichosanthes Seed), Taoren (Peach Seed), Hu Huanglian (Coptis Chinensis alternative), Yanhu (Corydalis Rhizome), Lingzhi (Trogopterus Dung, stir-fried), Ezhu (Curcuma Zedoaria Rhizome, baked), Sanleng (Sparganium Rhizome, baked), Gansui (Kansui Root), Daji (Euphorbia Lathyris Root), Honghua (Carthamus Flower), Qiancao (Rubia Cordifolia Root, i.e., Wuzhao Long), Niuxi (Achyranthes Root), Xuduan (Dipsacus Root), Cheqianzi (Plantago Seed), Mutong (Akebia Stem), Zaojiao (Gleditsia Spine), Xixin (Asarum Root), Bamaren (Castor Bean Seed), Mugeren (Momordica Semen), Dahuang (Rhubarb Root), Mangxiao (Mirabilite), Lingyangjiao (Antelope Horn), Xijiao (Rhinoceros Horn - *Note: Substitute with Buffalo Horn in modern practice*), Shan Jia (Pangolin Scale), Quanxie (Scorpion), Muli (Oyster Shell), Rendongteng (Honeysuckle Stem), Gancao (Licorice Root), Shijueming (Argonaut Eggshell, 1 liang each); Wuzhuyu (Evodia Fruit), Guanzi Gui (Cassia Bark), Chantui (Cicada Slough, 5 qian each).
