Su You Feng Sui Decoction: Treats cough caused by Lung dryness. Use 1 liang of Pine Seed Kernel (Song Ren) and 2 liang of Walnut Kernel (Hetao Ren), grind into a paste, mix with cooked honey to preserve. Take 2 qian each time, administered after meals by dissolving in boiling water.

A thirteen-year-old boy suffered from cough and night sweats. He consulted a pediatrician, who stated it was merely childhood sweating and required no medication. One month later, his eyes suddenly turned red, his appetite decreased, and blood streaks appeared in his sputum. I palpated his pulse: the left side was faint and weak, while the right side was large, surging, and rapid. This indicates a Fire syndrome. I suspected he had engaged in sexual activity or had unfulfilled desires. Despite his parents' denials and repeated private inquiries, he finally admitted that he had seen a girl living next door to his schoolhouse, felt attracted to her but could not obtain her, and thus fell ill. I prescribed Angelica Root (Danggui), Rehmannia Root (Dihuang), Poria (Fushen), Polygala Root (Yuanzhi), Tree Peony Bark (Mudanpi), Ziziphus Seed (Suanzaoren), Atractylodes Rhizome (Baizhu), Licorice Root (Gancao), and Platycodon Root (Jiegeng). After dozens of doses, he was completely cured.
Another patient suffered from cough and shortness of breath. I used Astragalus Root (Huangqi) as the sovereign herb, combined with Angelica Root (Danggui), Donkey-hide Gelatin (Ejiao), Tangerine Peel (Chenpi), Asparagus Tuber (Tiantong), Mulberry Root Bark (Sangbaipi), Anemarrhena Rhizome (Zhimu), and Phellodendron Bark (Huangbo). After several doses... [Text cuts off]
Blood is the companion of Qi. The five zang organs, six fu organs, four limbs, and hundred bones of the human body all rely on blood for nourishment. Blood moves attached to Qi; when Qi flows smoothly, blood flows smoothly; when Qi rebels, blood rebels, just as husband and wife follow each other and harmonize. If Yin fluid is deficient and Yang qi prevails, the excess transforms into Fire. Qi, empowered by Fire, moves vigorously. This is like a man and woman walking together; if the man gains strength, he strides forward, but if the woman loses her way, she strays temporarily. Therefore, Fire carries Blood upward, causing chaotic and reckless movement, leading to bleeding from the upper orifices, manifesting as vomiting blood, epistaxis, coughing, and expectoration. In the early stage, when Zheng Qi (Upright Qi) is not yet deficient, it is like water overflowing in the capital. One must clean the source and also build dikes to control the flow. Otherwise, if allowed to flow freely, the trickle will become a torrent, which cannot be stopped? If the source is not like the rivers and seas, will it not dry up? Moreover, if hemorrhage persists, True Yin is already depleted, and Ministerial Fire (Xiang Huo) naturally blazes, inevitably presenting symptoms such as tidal fever, night sweats, and seminal emission/slippery discharge. At this juncture, the treatment method should employ tonifying Qi (Note: Text says "Yi Yang", but context implies tonifying Qi/Blood via Duzhen Tang) as the sovereign, assist with nourishing Yin and Blood, and use clearing Metal (Lung) herbs to cleanse the source, allowing Yin to grow. When the source is clean, the flow is clear, ensuring no future worries. However, what is meant by "tonifying Yang/Qi" refers to formulas like Ginseng Single Herb Decoction (Duzhen Tang). What is meant by "nourishing Yin and Blood" refers to aged Lotus Rhizome Juice (Ou Zhi) or Child's Urine (Tongbian) alone. In summary, hemorrhage due to Phlegm-Fire is caused by the flaming up of Yin Fire. This Yin Fire is referred to as Dragon-Lei Fire. It cannot be subdued by water, nor can it be directly suppressed by bitter-cold herbs. How can bitter-cold herbs suppress it? If one recklessly uses bitter-cold herbs to damage the Spleen, food intake will decrease day by day, and muscles will waste away day by day. Jiezhai said: "Those who take cold herbs have one survivor out of a hundred; those who take urine have none who die." This statement precisely applies here.
Saint's Commentary: Hemorrhagic syndromes are of various types. There is Yang invading Yin, where Heat in Blood causes reckless movement. There is Yin invading Yang, where Yang deficiency leaves Yin unattached, causing reckless overflow without following the meridians. There is blood exiting through the clear pathway (respiratory tract) manifesting as epistaxis, and blood exiting through the turbid pathway (digestive tract) manifesting as hematemesis. Vomiting blood originates from the Liver; spitting blood originates from the Stomach; epistaxis originates from the Lungs. Bleeding from the ears is called Ear Epistaxis (Er Nu); bleeding from the skin pores is called Blood Sweat (Xue Han); simultaneous bleeding from mouth and nose is called "All Orifices Bleeding"; massive bleeding is called Great Epistaxis (Da Nu). Although causes vary, they mostly belong to Fire diseases. If one does not trace the source and treat accordingly, is it not a mistake akin to losing sheep on a divergent path?
