Ode on Hundred Symptoms
Cited in *Zhenjiu Dacheng* (Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion) from *Zhenjiu Juying* (Gathering of Acupuncture Elegance).
The acupoints for treating a hundred symptoms require repeated careful study. Xinhui (B16) connects to Yubin (GB15); head wind can be treated with golden needles. Between Xuanlu (GB5) and Heyan (GB7), hemianalgesia is stopped; between Qiangjian (GV19) and Fenglong (ST40), severe headache is controlled. Originally, for facial edema and flaccid swelling, one must rely on Shuigou (GV26) and Qianding (GV20); for deafness and qi obstruction, one relies entirely on Tinghui (GB2) and Yifeng (TE17). If there is a sensation of insects crawling on the face, Yingxiang (LI20) can be taken; if there is cicada-like noise in the ears, Tinghui (GB2) is suitable for treatment. For dizzy eyes, take Zhengzheng (SI7) and Feiyang (BL58); for yellow eyes, take Yanggang (BL67) and Danshu (BL19). For pterygium, attack the area of Xiaozhe (SI1) and Ganshu (BL18); for tearing, prick Linqi (GB14) and Touwei (ST8). When vision is blurred, immediately seek Zanzhu (BL2) and Sanjian (LI3); when eyes feel dim and desolate, urgently take Yanglao (SI5) and Tianzhu (BL10). Observe night blindness as liver qi issue, carefully deduce from Jingming (BL1) and Xingjian (LR2); examine neck stiffness with cold damage, governed by Wenliu (LI37) and Qimen (LR14). Lianquan (CV23) and Zhongchong (PC9) are suitable for swollen and painful tongue; Tianfu (LU3) and Hegu (LI4) directly treat epistaxis. Ermen (TE21) and Sizhukong (TE23) stop toothache instantly; Jiache (ST6) and Dicang (ST4) correct facial paralysis in a moment. For sore throat, Yemen (TE3) and Yuji (LU10) go to treat; for muscle cramps, Jinmen (BL63) and Qiuxu (GB40) come to heal. Yanggu (SI5) and Xiaxi (GB43) jointly treat jaw swelling and lockjaw; Shaoshang (LU11) and Quze (PC3) are applied together for blood deficiency and thirst. Tongtian (BL3) removes the suffering of nasal anosmia; Fuliù (KI7) dispels the sorrow of dry tongue and mouth. Yamén (GV15) and Guanchong (TE1) are critical for flaccid tongue and aphasia; Tianding (TE12) and Jianshi (PC5) should not delay treatment for loss of voice and stuttering. Taichong (LR3) using reducing method quickly heals lip deviation; Chengjiang (CV24) using reducing method immediately alleviates toothache. Neck stiffness with aversion to wind: Sugu (BL65) connects to Tianzhu (BL10); febrile disease with no sweat: Dadu (SP2) connects to Jingqu (LU8).
Just like stubborn numbness in both arms: Shaohai (HT3) approaches Santli (ST36); hemiplegia: Yanglingquan (GB34) reaches far to Quchi (LI11). Jianli (CV11) and Neiguan (PC6) sweep away chest distress; Tinggong (SI19) and Pishu (BL20) dispel heart-region sorrow. It has long been known that for costal pain, Qihu (ST15) and Huagai (RN21) are effective; for borborygmus within the abdomen, Xiawan (CV10) and XianGu (BL65) can calm it. How to treat chest and hypochondriac distension? Zhangmen (LR13) and Burong (ST19) should be sought carefully. Diaphragmatic pain with fluid retention is hard to bear; Danzhong (CV17) and Juque (CV14) are needled. Chest fullness with dysphagia: Zhongfu (LU1) and Yishe (BL48) are traversed; blood stasis retained in the chest and diaphragm: Shenshu (BL23) and Juliao (ST3) are appropriate. Chest fullness and neck stiffness: Shencang (BL44) and Xuanji (CV21) have been tested; back-linked lower back pain: Baihuanxu (BL30) and Weizhong (BL40) have been experienced. For spastic rigidity: Shuidao (ST28) and Jinsuo (GV9); for dizziness: Quanliao (SI18) and Daying (ST5). Spasmodic diseases do not heal without Luxi (EX-HN1); umbilical wind requires Rangu (KI2) for easy awakening. Weiyang (BL39) and Tianchi (PC1): axillary swelling disperses quickly after needling; Houxi (SI3) and Huantiao (GB30): leg pain lightens immediately after needling. Nightmares and restlessness: Lidui (ST45) harmonizes with Yinbai (SP1); manic running and shouting: Shangwan (CV13) rises together with Shenmen (HT7). Palpitations and fright: take Yangjiao (GB35) and JieXi (ST41) without error; opisthotonos and crying: rely on Tianshuong (GB30) and Dahuang (SP15) with precision. Epilepsy commands Shenzhu (GV12) and Benshen (GB13); fever relies on the fluids of Shaochong (HT9) and Quchi (LI11). For seasonal epidemic heat: Taodao (GV13) seeks Feishu (BL13) for regulation; frequent wind epilepsy: Shendao (GV11) returns to Xinxshu (BL15) for peace. Lower Liao (BL31) settles damp-cold and damp-heat; Yongquan (KI1) clears jue-cold and jue-heat. Chills and aversion to cold: Erjian (LI2) unblocks Yinxi (HT6) secretly; vexation and vomiting: Youmen (KI15) opens Bi through Yutang (CV16) clearly. Xingjian (LR2) and Yongquan (KI1) govern kidney exhaustion in polydipsia; Yinlingquan (SP9) and Shuifen (CV9) remove umbilical edema. Phthisis and corpse transmission: follow the path of Pohu (BL42) and Gānghuáng (BL48); sudden evil cholera: seek the route of Yinggu (KI3) and Santli (ST36). To treat jaundice and eliminate yellowness: coordinate Houxi (SI3) and Laogong (PC8) to observe; fatigue and嗜卧 (preference for lying down): go to Tongli (HT5) and Dazhong (KI4) to clarify. Continuous cough: Feishu (BL13) must welcome Tianchu (CV22); red and scanty urination: Duiduan (CV25) alone drains the Taiyang meridian. Pricking Changqiang (GV1) at Chengshan (BL57) effectively treats fresh blood in stool due to intestinal wind; Needling Sanyinjiao (SP6) at Qihai (CV6) specifically manages white turbidity and chronic seminal emission. Just like Huangshu (KI16) and Henggu (KI12): drain long-standing accumulation of five types of strangury; Yinxi (HT6) and Houxi (SI3): treat excessive night sweating. Spleen deficiency with undigested grain: seek Pishu (BL20) and Pangguangshu (BL28); stomach cold with difficult digestion: Hunmen (BL47) and Weishu (BL21) are responsible. Nasal polyps must take Yinjiao (DU27); goiter must seek Fubai (GB12). Dadun (LR1) and Zhaohai (KI6) are good at eliminating cold hernia; Wuli (CH7) and Binnao (SI10) can treat scrofula. Zhiyin (BL67) and Pingyi (EX-HN1): treat many painful itching disorders; Jianyu (LI15) and Yangxi (LI5): eliminate extreme hidden wind heat. Furthermore, discussing women's menstrual irregularities: Dijí (SP8) and Xuehai (SP10) are自有 (naturally available); women with qi deficiency and leakage bleeding: Jiaoxin (SP8) and Heyang (BL57) are indispensable. Leucorrhea and postpartum hemorrhage: Chongmen (SP12) and Qichong (ST30) should be examined; delayed menstruation: Tianshu (ST25) and Shuquan (KI5) should be detailed. Jianjing (GB21) is extremely effective for mastitis; Shangqiu (SP5) is best for hemorrhoids and tumors. Rectal prolapse seeks Bairui (GV1) and Wei Cui (EX-B1); infertility searches Yinjiao (RN7) and Shiguan (RN5). Zhongwan (CV12) governs accumulated dysentery; Waixiu (GB36) searches the large intestine. Cold malaria: Shangyang (LI1) and Taixi (KI3) are verified; xianpi (abdominal masses): Chongmen (SP12) and Xuehai (SP10) are strong.
Medicine is the master of human life, not undertaken by those without ambition; acupuncture is the profound mystery of principles, requiring instruction from perfected individuals. First investigate the disease source, then attack the acupoints; achieve merit with every movement, obtain effect with every needle. Then one knows the mystery within mysteries, and reaches the wonder within wonders. This chapter does not exhaust all, but briefly lists its essentials.
Biao You Fu (Ode on Marking the Profound) from *Zhenjing Zhinan* (Guide to the Needle Classic)
The method of saving lives lies in the wonderful use of needles. Observe the seasons in the heavenly way, determine constitution in one's own heart. In spring and summer, when thin, needle shallow; in autumn and winter, when fat, needle deep. If one does not exhaust the yin-yang of meridians, one often encounters needle prohibitions; having discussed the deficiency and excess of zang-fu organs, one must seek along the meridians. Originally, qi and blood start from the Middle Jiao, where water initially leaks. Taiyin (Lung) begins, ending at Jueyin (Pericardium); acupoints emerge from Yunmen (LU2), reaching Qimen (LR14) last. The twelve regular meridians, collateral vessels walk over three hundred branches; upright, side-lying, and prone positions, qi and blood have over six hundred stations. Hand and foot Yang meridians: hand walks to head, head walks to foot; Hand and foot Yin meridians: foot walks to abdomen, chest walks to hand. To understand Ying-Sui (following and opposing), one must know reverse and smooth; moreover, yin-yang, the amount of qi and blood is most important. Jueyin and Taiyang: little qi, much blood; Taiyin and Shaoyin: little blood, much qi; furthermore, those with much qi and little blood belong to Shaoyang; those with abundant qi and blood belong to Yangming. First detail the suitability of amounts, then observe the arriving qi. Light, slippery, slow means it has not arrived; heavy, choppy, tight means it has arrived. Having arrived, retain or release based on cold/heat; not yet arrived, await qi based on deficiency/excess. The arrival of qi is like a fish swallowing bait, floating and sinking; the non-arrival of qi is like an empty hall, deep and profound. Fast arrival brings fast effect; slow arrival brings no cure. Observing the method of the Nine Needles, the Filiform Needle is the subtlest, corresponding to the Seven Stars, presiding over all acupoints. Its form is Metal, having the way to dispel evil and support righteousness; its length is Water, having the mechanism to resolve stagnation; its insertion resembles Wood, oblique or straight; its mouth compares to Fire, advancing yang and supplementing weakness. Following mechanisms and covering resembles Earth, corresponding to Five Elements and thus known. However, these three cun and six fen contain profound principles; though fine as hair, they connect to many paths. They can balance cold and heat of the five zang organs, regulate deficiency and excess of the six fu organs. Contraction and blockage: dispatch the Eight Evils to depart; cold-heat pain and bi syndrome: open the Four Passes to end it. All needling makes the Original Spirit face inward before insertion; once needled, makes the Original Spirit settled and qi follows. If spirit does not face inward, do not needle; if spirit is settled, apply treatment.
At the place of setting the foot, take qi and blood as the main intent; at the place of starting hands, recognize Water and Wood as the foundation. Heaven, Earth, Man are the Three Realms: Yongquan (KI1) same as Xuanji (CV21) and Bairui (GV20); Upper, Middle, Lower are the Three Sections: Dabao (SP21) with Tianshu (ST25) and Diji (SP8). Yang Qiao, Yang Wei, and Du Meridian govern shoulder, back, waist, leg diseases on the exterior; Yin Qiao, Yin Wei, Ren, Dai, and Chong meridians remove doubts of heart, abdomen, hypochondrium, and ribs on the interior. Two Ling, two Qiao, two Jiao seem continuous and connect to the Five Greats; Two Jian, two Shang, two Jing rely on each other and separate into two branches. Generally, the method of taking acupoints must have precise measurements; first judge by intention, then observe flesh distribution. Or obtain by extension/flexion, or by flat/stable positioning. In Yang parts beside tendons and bones, depression is true; in Yin parts between popliteal fossa, arterial response corresponds. Taking five acupoints, use one acupoint and it must be端正 (correct); taking three meridians, use one meridian and it can be corrected. Head and shoulder detailed separately, Du and Ren meridians easily determined. Clarify root and branch, discuss meridians of deep and shallow needling; stop pain and move ache, take intersecting and penetrating paths. Have you not heard that for zang-fu diseases, seek the subtlety of Men, Hai, Shu, and Mu points; for meridian stagnation, seek the way of Yuan, Bie, intersection, and confluence. Further exhaust the Four Roots and Three Knots, according to root and branch, needling ensures recovery; only use Eight Methods and Five Gates, distinguishing host and guest, needling ensures effect. Eight Extraordinary Vessels always connect to Eight Hui Points, originally the outline; Twelve Meridians and Twelve Yuan-Source points are the pivot. One day needling sixty-six acupoints shows profundity; one hour taking twelve meridian Yuan-Source points reveals essentials. Originally, tonification and reduction methods lie not in respiration but in fingers; rapid effect requires crossing meridians and knowing the original meridian. Crossing meridian and Miao needling: left has disease, take right side; draining collaterals and distant needling: head has disease, needle foot. Ju Ci and Miao Ci differ slightly, micro-needles and wonderful needling communicate. Observe sections to know meridian deficiency/excess, view floating/sinking to distinguish zang-fu cold/warmth. First make the needle bright and worry about damage; next hide in mouth to warm the needle. Eyes do not look outward, hands like holding a tiger; heart has no internal longing, like awaiting a noble person. Left hand heavy and pressing often, to disperse qi; right hand light and entering slowly, causing no pain. Empty stomach fearfulness: standing upright or sideways causes much dizziness; back to eye, sink and press, sitting/lying flat prevents fainting. Pushing on Ten Stems and Ten Changes, know opening/closing of acupoints; discussing Five Elements and Five Zang, observe prosperity/decline of days/times. Lie like a crossbow, respond like releasing a trigger. Yin Jiao and Yang Bie settle blood晕 (vertigo); Yin Qiao and Yin Wei deliver placenta. Bi-jue and hemiplegia: Ying-Sui makes meridians continue; leakage, prolapse, leucorrhea: warm tonification makes qi and blood return. Still and retain long, stop needle to await. The accurate one takes Zhaohai (KI6) to treat throat obstruction; the exact place uses Dazhong (KI4) to treat mental dullness. Generally, pain is excess-reduce, itching/numbness is deficiency-tonify. Heavy body and joint pain reside in Shu points; subcardiac stuffiness is governed by Jing points. Heart distension and throat pain: needle Taichong (LR3) to remove; spleen pain and stomach ache: reduce Gongsun (SP4) to heal. Chest fullness and abdominal pain: pierce Neiguan (PC6); hypochondriac and rib pain: needle Feihu (BL59). Tendon contraction and bone pain: tonify Hunmen (BL47); body heat and劳嗽 (consumptive cough): reduce Pohu (BL42). Head wind and headache: pierce Shenmai (BL62) and Jinmen (BL63); itchy/painful eyes: reduce Guangming (GB37) and Diwu (BL64). Reduce Yinxi (HT6) to stop night sweats, treat pediatric bone-steaming fever; pierce Pianli (SI8) to promote urination, treat adult hydroperitoneum. Stroke: Huantiao (GB30) is suitable for needling; deficiency/damage: Tianshu (ST25) can be taken. Thus, before noon until Mao hour, Taiyin generates and warms quickly; Li left and You south, moon dies and new moon, cool quickly. Follow, rub, pluck, anger, retain inhalation mother to firm and lengthen; nail down extend lift, quick exhalation son to shorten. Move retreat empty rest, meet seize right to reduce cool; push insert advance rub, follow assist left to warm. Beware of major critical diseases, color and pulse inconsistent, do not needle; cold, heat, wind, yin, hunger, fullness, drunkenness, labor, strictly avoid. Full moon do not tonify, dark moon do not reduce; waxing do not seize, new moon do not assist. Refine mind and exhaust methods, do not let moxa burn skin; correct principle and seek origin, avoid inserting needle losing position. Avoid moxa areas adding four limbs, forty-nine; prohibit needling areas excluding six shu, twenty-two. Furthermore, hear High Emperor held illness not cured, Li family pierced Juque (CV14) and revived; Crown Prince sudden death as jue, Yue Ren needled Weizhong (BL40) and woke up. Jianjing (GB21), Quchi (LI11): Zhen Quan pierced arm pain and shot again; Xuanzhong (GB39), Huantiao (GB30): Hua Tuo pierced lame foot and walked immediately. Qiufu needled Yaoshu (GV19), ghost avoided deep disease; Wang Zuan needled Jiaoshu (GV8), demon spirit stood out. Piercing Ganshu (BL18) and Mingmen (GV4), makes blind man see autumn hair tip; taking Shaoyang and Jiaobie (GB34), makes deaf man hear summer mosquito sound.
Alas! Distance from sages grows far, this way gradually falls. Some do not grasp essence and scatter their learning, some expand ability but violate prohibitions. Foolish and mediocre, shallow will, hard to match profound words; ultimate Dao is profound, how many obtain it? Occasionally stating these words, dare not show to enlightened ones, perhaps enlightening child's mind.
Tianxing Mijue Ge (Song of Heavenly Star Secrets) by Master Sangjun
From Xu Shi's *Zhenjiu Daquan* (Complete Collection of Acupuncture and Moxibustion).
Heavenly star secrets are known by few, this method specifically divides front and back application.
If food stagnation stops in the stomach, later seek Santli (ST36) rising from Xuanji (CV21).
Spleen disease blood and qi: first Hegu (LI4), later prick Sanyinjiao (SP6) do not delay.
If struck by ghost evil: first Jianshi (PC5); arm/hand contraction and bi: take Jianyu (LI15).
If feet turn cramp and eyes blur: first pierce Chengshan (BL57) then inner ankle.
Leg qi sour pain: Jianjing (GB21) first, then seek Santli (ST36) and Yanglingquan (GB34).
If small intestine connects to umbilical pain: first pierce Yinlingquan (SP9) then Yongquan (KI1).
Tinnitus and lower back pain: first Wuhui (GV9), then needle Ermen (TE21), Santli (ST36), Neiting (ST44).
Small intestine qi pain: first Changqiang (GV1), later prick Dadun (LR1) do not rush.
Foot slack difficult walking: first Juegu (GB39), then seek Tiaokou (ST38) and Chongyang (ST42).
Toothache, headache plus throat obstruction: first pierce Erjian (LI2) then Santli (ST36).
Chest/diaphragm stuffiness: first Yinjiao (RN7). Needle reaches Chengshan (BL57) diet delights.
Abdomen/fluid swelling bloated: first needle Shuifen (CV9) reduce Jianli (CV11).
Cold damage passing stages no sweat: Qimen (LR14), Santli (ST36) look sequentially.
Cold malaria facial swelling and borborygmus: first take Hegu (LI4) then Neiting (ST44).
Cold wind-damp-bi needle where: first take Huantiao (GB30) then Yanglingquan (GB34).
Finger pain contraction Shaoshang (LU11) is good, apply according to law none not spiritual.
This is Master Sang's true mantra, contemporary doctors do not treat lightly.
Jinzhen Fu (Ode on Golden Needles) from Ziqi Fenggu Feijing Zouqi Cuoyao
From Xu Shi's *Zhenjiu Daquan*.
Observing the needle way, swift methods are most strange. Must understand tonification/reduction, then can rise from peril. First divide disease upper/lower, then fix acupoint height/head. Head has disease take foot, left has disease take right. Men's qi early upper late lower, taking it must understand principle; Women's qi early lower late upper, using it must know time. Before noon is early belongs Yang, after noon is late belongs Yin. Men/women upper/lower, rely on waist to divide. Hand/Foot Yang meridians: hand walks head, head walks foot; Hand/Foot Yin meridians: foot walks abdomen, chest walks hand. Yin rises Yang descends, exit/enter mechanism. Opposing them: reduce/oppose; following them: tonify/follow. Spring/summer needle shallow because thin, autumn/winter needle deep because fat. Further observe yuan qi thickness/shallowness; shallow/deep needling especially suitable.
Originally tonification/reduction method, wonder lies in respiration and fingers. Men: thumb advances forward left turn, exhale is tonify, retreats backward right turn, inhale is reduce, lift needle is heat, insert needle is cold; Women: thumb retreats backward right turn inhale is tonify, advances forward left turn exhale is reduce, insert needle is heat, lift needle is cold. Left/right differs, chest/back different. Before noon thus, after noon reverses. Therefore claw and cut, inserting needle method; shake and retreat, withdrawing needle method; move and advance, urging needle method; follow and press, moving qi method. Rubbing removes disease, plucking tonifies deficiency. Abdomen rotating, rubbing closes acupoint. Heavy sink bean-sized is press, light float bean-sized is lift. Fourteen methods, needle essentials prepared. Tonify: one retreat three fly, true qi returns; Reduce: one fly three retreat, evil qi avoids. Tonify tonifies deficiency, reduce reduces excess. Excess is swelling/pain, called excess; deficiency is itching/numbness, called deficiency. Qi fast effect fast, qi slow effect slow. Death/life noble/base, under needle all know. Base hard, noble brittle; living rough, dead void. Await not arrive, surely die without doubt.
Furthermore inserting needle method: first must claw press, heavy and cut, then let cough once, follow cough insert needle. All tonify exhale, first needle to skin inside, called Heaven Talent; pause slightly advance needle, to flesh inside, called Human Talent; pause again advance needle, to tendon/bone between, called Earth Talent, this is extreme place, should tonify. Pause long while, must retreat needle to Human division, await qi sink tight, invert needle facing disease. Advance/retreat come/go, fly meridian move qi, all within. All reduce inhale, first needle to Heaven, pause slightly advance needle, straight to Earth, get qi reduce. Pause long while, must retreat needle, back to Human, await qi sink tight, invert needle facing disease, method same as before. If fainting needle, spirit qi void, with needle tonify, with sleeve cover, mouth/nose qi returns, hot soup give. Pause slightly, according to previous again apply.
And adjusting qi method: insert needle to Earth after, back to Human division. Want qi ascend, rotate needle right; want qi descend, rotate needle left. Want tonify first exhale then inhale, want reduce first inhale then exhale. Qi not arrive, with hand follow/press, with claw cut/press, with needle shake, advance/rotate/rub/pluck, straight wait qi arrive, with Dragon/Tiger ascending method, press front make qi back, press back make qi front, move qi walk to pain place, with accept qi method, hold needle straight insert, again downward accept, make qi not return. If joint obstructed涩 (sticky), qi not pass, with Dragon/Turtle/Green Phoenix connecting meridian accepting qi grand section method, drive and move it, still with follow/press/claw/cut, none not respond. This is Tongxian wonder.
Moreover withdrawing needle method: disease trend retreated, needle qi slightly loose; disease not retreated, needle qi like root, push not move, turn not shift, this is evil qi sucking needle, true qi not arrived, cannot withdraw. Withdraw it, disease returns, again need tonify/reduce, stop to await it, straight wait slightly loose, can withdraw needle bean-sized, shake and stop. Tonify inhale go fast, acupoint urgent rub; reduce exhale go slow, acupoint not close. Want pores dense, then inhale; therefore say insert needle precious slow, too fast injures blood; withdraw needle precious slow, too fast injures qi. Above general summary, in it exhausted.
Examining treating disease methods have eight: One says Burning Mountain Fire, treat stubborn numbness cold-bi, first shallow then deep, use nine yang and three advance three retreat, slow lift tight press, heat arrives close tightly, insert needle remove cold has standard. Two says Penetrating Heaven Cool, treat muscle heat bone steaming, first deep then shallow, use six yin and three exit three enter, tight lift slow press, slowly raise needle, retreat heat can rely. All finely rub it, remove disease standard rope. Three says Yin within Yang, first cold then heat, shallow then deep, with nine-six method, then first tonify then reduce. Four says Yang within Yin, first heat then cold, deep then shallow, with six-nine formula, then reduce then tonify. Tonify straight must heat arrive, reduce must wait cold invade, like rubbing thread, slowly rotate needle. Method shallow use shallow, method deep use deep, two cannot combine and confuse. Five says Zi-Wu Pestle, water蛊 (ascites) diaphragm qi, drop acupoint after, adjust qi even, needle walk up/down, nine enter six exit, left/right rotate it, thousand times self level. Six says Enter Qi Secret, waist/back elbow/knee pain, whole body wandering pain, pierce nine fen, perform nine tonify, lie needle five-seven inhales, wait ascend. Also can Dragon/Tiger battle, left rotate nine right rotate six, is also stop pain needle. Seven says Retain Qi Secret, xianpi masses, pierce seven fen, use pure yang, then straight insert needle, qi come deep pierce, lift needle pause again. Eight says Draw/Add Secret, paralysis sores/scabies, take essential acupoint, make nine yang get qi, lift/press search, mainly move qi circulate. Hold needle straight insert, again downward accept, return yang invert yin. Finger below profound subtle, chest inside active method, one has not respond, repeat again apply.
