For all kinds of eye diseases in children, this prescription is effective.
Children need to be cautious regarding cold and heat changes, and their diet is difficult to regulate. This is largely because elders naturally enjoy sharing sweets with grandchildren, while young children often develop aversions due to overindulgence; this is the innate wisdom of infants. Therefore, regardless of the parents' status, they always desire their children's comfort and palatability of food. Diseases enter through the mouth, leading to the accumulation of damp-heat. Over time, this accumulates upward, causing harm to the eyes. Now that it is said to be "effective," it is fortunate that all symptoms have been eliminated. However, the Sovereign drugs—Renshen, Huangqi, Baizhu, and Gancao—assist Spleen Yang; the Minister drugs—Danggui and Shanyao—assist Spleen Yin. The Assistant drugs—Xiangfu, Sharen, Chenpi, and Banxia—dredge dampness; the Guide drugs—Zharon, Ling, Shenqu, and Maiya—promote the resolution of stagnation. When dampness is removed, stagnation is cleared; when stagnation moves, muscle tissue relaxes. This method of assisting by not directly tonifying is precisely a deeper form of assistance. Moreover, how much more so does the honey-cake preparation enhance the five aspects of Spleen assistance?
Poem: Baizhu, Gancao, Renshen, Ling, Chenpi, Banxia; Shan Zha, Huai Yao, Xiang Fu, Dang Gui; Sha Ren, Mi, Mai Ya, Chun Cheng Qu; Printed and gifted to infants and children to assist Lung and Spleen.
[Huihe Fang]
The disease presents as excess but the physical form is deficient; neither attacking nor tonifying alone is appropriate. To achieve balance, treatment must be gradual.
Huihe Fang Composition:
Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Tiandong (Asparagi Radix) (each 2 liang); Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) (each 4 liang).
"Ben" (Root) implies origin. Lung Qi originates from the Dantian; thus, Lung and Kidney are mother-child organs. Therefore, Renshen tonifies Lung Qi; Er Dong (Tiandong and Maidong) clears and moistens the Lungs; Shudihuang tonifies Kidney essence; Shengdi cools Kidney water. When Lung Qi is sufficient, it naturally generates Kidney water, and enables the Kidney to grasp Qi. When Kidney water is sufficient, it controls Fire, preventing Fire from punishing Metal. Once the root is solidified, conditions such as Lung consumption and deficiency heat will heal within days.
Poem: Renshen Gu Ben (Solidify the Root); Er Dong and Er Di; Metal and Water treated together, how simple and easy.
(Pounded into an extremely fine powder, mixed with light Ginger Decoction and a few drops of Mint Juice)
Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (equal parts); Gancao (Licorice Root) (half dose).
Liver dryness and consumption steaming, accompanied by cough and thirst, alternating chills and fever, and irregular menstruation; this formula governs these conditions.
The Liver stores Blood; deficiency leads to dryness and disease, hence bone-steaming tidal fever and irregular menstruation. Liver Fire attacks the Lung, hence cough and thirst. Liver pathogen transfers to the Gallbladder, hence alternating chills and fever. The formulation principle is: for dryness, nourishment is required, so Danggui is used; if Wood is excessive, Earth may decline, so Baizhu is used; Chaihu raises Yang, combined with Baishao it敛 (astringes/collects) wind, allowing Wood to flow smoothly; Fuling drains dampness, combined with Gancao it harmonizes the Middle Jiao, allowing Metal to vent freely. Additionally, Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) disperses depression and warms cold; Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) benefits Qi and disperses rebellion. Thus, Liver Qi gradually relaxes, and previous symptoms are instantly eliminated, hence the name Xiaoyao (Free and Easy Wanderer).
