The *Huangdi Neijing* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon) states: Consuming rich and greasy foods can give rise to severe ding sores (hard, deep-rooted skin infections). Ding sores are caused by fire-toxin, resulting from indulging in strong and nourishing foods, as well as contracting epidemic qi of the four seasons. These sores mostly occur on the head, face, and limbs.
In the initial stage, there is numbness, and the shape resembles millet grains, or the head is yellow and small, accompanied by aversion to cold and fever, itching, or pain, with heaviness in the four limbs. The toxicity is severe, the sore head is hard, and the root is deep; it may cause death from morning to evening. Initially, Duoming Tang (Life-Restoring Decoction) is suitable for internal use. Externally, the ding root must be extracted before healing can occur. Use a fine porcelain bian stone (stone lancet) to pierce the ding head, squeeze out foul blood, apply Bading Zhibao Dan (Extraction Ding Supreme Treasure Pill) to the sore, or puncture a small hole with a needle. Insert Lima Huiding Dan (Immediate Return Ding Pill) into the hole, cover externally with an ointment to draw out the ding root. However, ming ding (visible ding) is easy to treat, while an ding (hidden ding) is difficult to heal. Examples include those growing inside the ears and nose, or in hidden areas like the axilla. If treatment is delayed, the toxin will inevitably "walk yellow" (spread internally to attack the heart). It is strictly forbidden to use wind-drying and acrid-hot preparations, such as Xinyi (Magnolia Flower), Baizhi (Angelica Root), Huajiao (Sichuan Pepper), and Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger). This is because toxins from various sores should be dispersed, whereas the toxin of ding sores should be gathered; if gathered, the toxin remains at the original site, and removing its root leads to self-healing. If one observes the patient fearing cold and mistakenly uses wind-drying agents, how could one know that ding arises from fire-toxin? Extreme heat generates cold conditions; wind-drying aids fire, forcing the toxin inward. Early treatment is essential upon the first sign. If the aforementioned pills are hard to find urgently, crush fresh snails and apply them topically, or crush Jiajugeng (Home Chrysanthemum Root) and apply it.
Internally, decoct 5 qian of Juhua Ye (Chrysanthemum Leaf), 3 qian of Zihua Diding (Viola Yedoensis), and 1 qian of Sheng Gancao (Raw Licorice Root), and take orally. Alternatively, use Meihua Dianshe Dan (Plum Blossom Point-Tongue Pill) or Chansu Wan (Toad Venom Pill), taken once or twice, washed down with juice from chrysanthemum root mixed with hot wine. The goal is to induce sweating. The *Zhongfutang Fang* (Prescriptions from Zhongfu Hall) states: To treat ding, crush garden chrysanthemums, extract one bowl of juice, and drink it for immediate cure. If flowers, leaves, or roots are unavailable, crushing them for juice is also acceptable. With this prescription, other formulas can be discarded. Ancient saying: For ding sores, first prick to bleed; internal toxins should be released via sweating. Moxibustion is prohibited, but acupuncture is allowed; cotton is feared, but iron is not. For initial outbreaks above the neck, use a bipin needle (scalpel-like needle) to penetrate the ding head 4-5 fen deep. Sever the ding root, roll out all toxic blood, insert Huiding Dan (Return Ding Pill) or Chansu strip (Toad Venom Strip) into the hole, and cover with Bagao (Ba Ointment). For outbreaks below the neck, moxibustion is also permissible. If moxibustion causes no pain, acupuncture to bleed and insertion of Chansu strips are still required. For the picking method, use a dry needle handle to scrape away the scorched skin on the toxic peak, then insert the needle into the ding root. If it feels hard as iron, it is a favorable sign (Shun); if it feels soft as cotton, it is an unfavorable sign (Ni). In such cases, survival is rare. Pick until purple-black blood flows, then continue until bright red blood appears and pain is felt. Immediately fill with Botiao San (Pull-Dissolve Powder) and cover with Wanying Gao (Universal Ointment). Change after three shichen (6 hours). After 3-4 days, when the sore top dries, cover with Hupo San (Amber Powder) to push the ding root out. Apply Jiuyi Dan (Nine-to-One Pill), smear with Huanglian Gao (Coptis Ointment), and cover externally with Baigao (White Ointment) to generate flesh and close the wound. If missed treatment leads to "walking yellow," with internal attack of toxic vapors, vomiting, nausea, and coma, the sore will collapse. Urgently locate the "ding seedling" (a vertical thorn-like projection) along the meridian at the site of walking yellow, and immediately use a bipin needle to extract foul blood. If there is diffuse swelling and confusion, urgently take Huiding San (Return Ding Powder). Severe pain will follow instantly; pain indicates rescue is possible. When the toxin transforms into yellow fluid and pain stops, life is saved.
[Renying Ding] Located below the nose and above the upper lip, presenting with hard swelling, numbness, and pain. Urgently crush Chansu Wan (Toad Venom Pill) and apply topically; internally take Juhua Diding Tang (Chrysanthemum and Viola Decoction). Topical application of crushed Juye (Chrysanthemum Leaf) is also effective. This condition belongs to Lung Fire.
[Quan Ding] Occurs between the zygomatic bones, presenting as small lumps like millet or adzuki beans, with a concave, hard top and a钉-head-like sensation upon pressure, accompanied by numbness, itching, and dull pain. Use Chansu Wan or Mailing Dan (Wheat Spirit Pill) to induce sweating. Subsequently, take Huanglian Xiaodu Yin (Coptis Detoxification Drink) to clear heat. External treatment follows previous methods. This condition belongs to Stomach Fire.
[Bi Ding] Occurs inside the nostrils, causing nasal obstruction and pain radiating to the forehead, potentially leading to swollen lips and cheeks. Use Chansu Wan to induce sweating. Further, grind Chansu Wan into fine powder and insufflate it into the nostrils. This condition belongs to Lung Fire.
[She Ding] A nodule forms on the tongue, becoming stiff and painful. Puncture with a needle, apply Bingpeng San (Ice and Borax Powder), and internally take Jiawei Erchen Tang (Modified Two-Aged Decoction) for efficacy. This condition belongs to Heart and Spleen Fire.
[Er Ding] Occurs in hidden areas of the ear canal, with black color, deep roots, and shape resembling pepper seeds. Pain is like awl piercing. Upon rupture, blood and water flow. Send Chansu Wan down with Congbai Tang (Scallion White Decoction) to induce sweating. Then, mix Chansu Wan with water to a thick consistency and drip into the ear. This condition belongs to Kidney Fire.
[Chun Ding] Occurs on the upper and lower lips. Suokou Ding (Lock-Mouth Ding) occurs at the corners of the mouth. Initially resembling millet, purple in color, hard as iron, with severe swelling, numbness, itching, and dull pain. Chun Ding causes lip skin to evert; Suokou Ding prevents mouth opening. Treatment follows previous methods; moxibustion is contraindicated. Upper lip relates to Spleen Fire, lower lip to Stomach Fire, and mouth corners to Heart and Spleen Fire.
[Ya Ding] A grain swells in the gum crevice, shaped like millet, with pain radiating to the cheek and neck. Break the skin with a silver hairpin to bleed, apply Badingsan (Extract Ding Powder), and slowly dissolve Chansu Wan in the mouth, swallowing the saliva. If irritability and thirst occur, take Huanglian Jiedu Tang (Coptis Clearing-Toxin Decoction) for cure. This condition belongs to Stomach Fire, or possibly Large Intestine Damp-Heat.
[Hongsid Ding] Occurs on arms and legs, starting as purple-black with a red thread extending upwards. Urgently prick both ends of the red thread with a needle to sever it; bleeding indicates cure. Alternatively, insert a Chansu strip at the origin of the ding and cover with Wanying Gao, while taking Huanglian Jiedu Tang. If not severed, the toxin enters the stomach and intestines, leading to untreatable conditions. The *Zhongfutang Fang* states: Prick the branching point of the red thread, squeeze out foul blood, then chew Fupinggen (Duckweed Root) finely and apply it for immediate cure.
[Shouzhang Ding] Occurs on the palm, hard and yellow, like a nail. Crush Cishi (Magnetite), Meitan (Coal), and Lizhirou (Lychee Meat) in unspecified proportions, mix evenly, and apply. Pain stops, and it heals overnight. This is a general treatment for ding.
[Shetou Ding] Occurs on fingers, presenting with purple discoloration and pain. Initially use Chansu Wan to induce sweating and apply Xionghuang San (Realgar Powder) externally. A simple formula named Luo Ding involves grinding Olive Pit (Ganlan He) with vinegar and applying it for gradual resolution. Those growing beside the nails are called Shayan Ding (Snake Eye Ding), resembling beans, purple, hard, and painful. Those growing behind the nail root are called Shebei Ding (Snake Back Ding), resembling dates, red, and swollen. Those on the middle phalanx with circumferential swelling are called Shejie Ding (Snake Joint Ding). Those on the front of the middle phalanx, yellow or purple, resembling fish bellies, are called Shedu Ding (Snake Belly Ding), red and painful. Initially take Chansu Wan and apply Xionghuang San externally.
[An Ding] Hard swelling without a head in the axilla, accompanied by aversion to cold, fever, stiffness, and pain. First take Mailing Dan to induce sweating.
[Nei Ding] Aversion to cold, fever, abdominal pain, and sudden swelling of a mass within a few days. Initially, jaw stiffness occurs. Administer 3-5 pills of Chansu Wan, ground in Congtang (Scallion Decoction), and force-feed. Once conscious, take 3 more pills of the same pill, chew Scallion White, and wash down with Yellow Wine. Cover with blankets to sweat; if no sweat, drink hot wine to induce it. An Ding treatment is similar, but without the picking method.
[Leng Ding] Occurs on the heel, presenting with purple-white discoloration, bone-piercing pain, deep rotting ulcers, and failure to heal for a long time. Use Shendeng Zhao Fa (Divine Lamp Illumination Method) to irradiate, apply Tiefsan San (Iron Powder Powder), and internally take Shixuan San (Ten Acupoints Powder).
[Daojian Ding] Broad like leek leaves, flesh purple-black like cauterization, over one cun long. Acupuncture is contraindicated. Crush 3 qian of Shengfan (Raw Alum) and 7 stalks of Congbai (Scallion White) together into seven pieces. Decoct Scallion White in water and swallow each piece separately. Cover with blankets to sweat. Avoid sexual intercourse, alcohol, meat, raw/cold foods, and spicy flavors.
[Yangmao Ding] Fever and chills resembling Taiyang disease, with red rashes or purple-black spots on the anterior and posterior chest/heart. Use a needle to pick out wool-like structures from the spots on the chest and back. Apply powder made from Heidou (Black Soybean) and Qiaomai (Buckwheat). Sweat immediately ensues, leading to cure. Another method: Use 2 qian of Mingxiongmo (Refined Realgar Powder), wrap in blue cloth, dip in hot distilled liquor, and rub the anterior chest until the "wool" moves to the posterior chest, then rub the back until all wool emerges for cure. Avoid tea and water for one day.
[Lantou Ding] For unruptured ding with already necrotic heads, use one bunch of Baijugeng (White Chrysanthemum Root), two Baimei (White Plum), and two large Yanyou (Ground Centipede). Crush together, add Mingxionghuang (Realgar), and apply. Replace when dry; apply several times for cure.
[Zima Ding] Ding head is purple and develops rapidly. Boil Baijiu (White Liquor), Ai Cao (Mugwort), Zihua Diding (Viola Yedoensis), and Cheqiancao (Plantain Herb) and drink for cure.
The *Yizong Jinjian* (Golden Mirror of Medicine) states: Huoyan Ding (Flame Ding) mostly occurs on lips, mouth, and finger joints, presenting with red-yellow discoloration, pain, itching, numbness, and alternating chills and fever; it belongs to Heart Meridian Fire-Toxin. Ziyan Ding (Purple Swallow Ding) mostly occurs between limbs, waist, ribs, tendons, and bones. Initially purple, followed by bloody discharge, and after three days, spreading to tendons and rotting bone; it belongs to Liver Meridian Fire-Toxin. Huanggu Ding (Yellow Drum Ding) mostly occurs at mouth corners, cheeks, zygoma, and eyelids. Yellow and shiny with red halos around, accompanied by vomiting, hiccups, numbness, and pain; it belongs to Spleen Meridian Fire-Toxin. Bairren Ding (White Blade Ding) mostly occurs in nostrils and hands. White top, hard, prominent root, prone to necrosis and sinking; it belongs to Lung Meridian Fire-Toxin. Heiyie Ding (Black Crust Ding) mostly occurs in ear canals, gum crevices, and hidden areas of chest, abdomen, waist, and kidneys. Black spots, purple discoloration, stubborn and hard as a nail; it belongs to Kidney Meridian Fire-Toxin. The five ding correspond to the five zang organs. Initially take Chansu Wan, washed down with scallion water, to induce sweating. If chills and fever persist, take Wuwei Xiaodu Yin (Five-Ingredient Detoxification Drink) to induce sweating. For mild cases, take Huading Neixiaosan (Dissolve Ding Internal Dissolving Powder). If toxin is about to walk yellow, urgently take Dingdu Fusheng Tang (Ding-Toxin Reviving Decoction). If already walked yellow, with mental restlessness and confusion, urgently use Qixingjian Tang (Seven-Star Sword Decoction) to save. If limbs are cold and pulse is absent, with toxic vapors blocked, first take Chansu Wan, followed by Muxiang Liqi Yin (Costus Qi-Circulating Drink), and the pulse will reappear. After any ding ulcerates, early tonification is inappropriate. Even in true deficiency, only mild tonification is allowed; warm tonification is forbidden. Even flesh-generating ointments should not be applied early.
