Bai Biandou (Dolichos Lablab Seed) 1 liang, Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma) 1.5 liang, Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) 3 liang, Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, stir-fried with soil) 3 liang, Lianrou (Nelumbinis Semen) 1 liang, Qianshi (Euryales Semen) 1.5 liang, Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum) 3 qian. The above herbs are ground into fine powder, mixed with refined honey to form pills, each weighing 2 qian. Take one pill per dose; after heavy drinking or overeating, take two pills. Chew thoroughly and swallow with light ginger soup.
The *I Ching* states: "Great is the generating power of Kun; all things rely on it for life." The name "Zisheng" (Nourishing Life) is derived from the fact that the vital qi of the Sanjiao (Triple Burner) and the five Zang organs relies entirely on the Spleen and Stomach for transformation and transportation.
Shandoukou (Cardamomi Fructus Rotundus) moves the Qi of the Upper Jiao to facilitate its distribution; Maiya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus), Yiren (Coicis Semen), Fuling (Poria), and Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) regulate the Qi of the Lower Jiao to facilitate its transformation. When the Qi of the Sanjiao flows smoothly and the Qi of the Five Zang organs is abundant, vital energy rises vigorously.
Maoshan Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, soaked in rice wash water for two nights, skin and root hairs removed) 2 jin, Huangjiu Mianqu (Wheat Leaven brewed with yellow wine, preparation method recorded elsewhere in Bencao) 4 liang, stir-fried with Cangzhu until reddish-brown, combined with Zaofan (Vitriol). Process according to the above method into fine powder, bind with vinegar paste to form pills the size of a wutong seed. Take 30-40 pills per dose, with good wine or millet soup as needed, 2-3 times daily.
Famu Wan (Wood-Chopping Pill) originates from *Zhang Sanfeng Xianzhuan Fang*. Zhang Sanfeng said: "This was transmitted by Patriarch Jin Pengtou of Shangqing. It treats yellow swelling resembling earth color, with miraculous efficacy." It stabilizes the Taiyin (Spleen) channel and is considered an immortal-grade medicine. Li Shizhen stated: Adding Zaofan to Pingwei San, formed into pills with Hu Tao (Walnut) and Zaozi (Jujube), or using Zaofan, Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and Baicaoshuang (Carbonized Herb Ash) as dosage forms, none compares to this formula.
Yuminoang (Papaveris Capsula, stir-fried with vinegar) 1.6 liang, Wumei Rou (Mume Fructus Carnositas) 4 qian. The above herbs are ground into fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with boiling water.
"Ning" means tranquility. Prolonged coughing exhausts the Lung Qi, causing it to scatter and fail to consolidate. This formula is used to calm the Lung only when Lung distension disease is severe. Hejian (Liu Wansu) stated: For chronic cough that does not resolve...
Heiqianniu Toumo (Semen Pharbitidis, first portion of powder, ground once only) 4 liang, Da Huixiang (Foeniculi Fructus, stir-fried) 1 liang. The above herbs are ground into fine powder. Mix 1-2 qian with fresh ginger juice and take before retiring.
The name "Yugong" implies that for swelling and hard flesh caused by Spleen dampness, attacking the pathogen is as effective as Yu the Great diverting floodwaters. Qian Niu Zi (Pharbitidis Semen) is bitter and hot, enters the Spleen to drain dampness, and is intended to descend through the Large Intestine; thus, it should be paired with Bo Huixiang (Foeniculi Fructus).
