The pulse feels long and leisurely under the fingers. If it carries a firm, beating quality, it deviates from normal. (A Long Pulse appears in spring and corresponds to the Liver Meridian. A soft and weak pulse, resembling the tip of a long bamboo pole held loosely, indicates a healthy Liver. A solid and slippery pulse, like stroking a rigid long pole, indicates Liver pathology. Generally, a Long Pulse signifies regulated Qi; however, if the pulse feels firm and hard upon pressure without softness, it indicates disordered Qi.)
When Shaoyang disease transmits, one can evaluate involvement of the Yangming stage. (If, two or three days after the onset of Cold Damage, a Long Pulse appears accompanied by eye pain, nasal dryness, and insomnia, this is Yangming disease.)
A Long Pulse at the Left Cun position suggests foot pain and tongue retraction. (The Classics state: "A Long Pulse at the Cun Kou indicates pain in the lower legs." Anatomically, the Left Cun corresponds to the Heart, which governs Yang and controls the blood vessels. A Long Pulse represents an excess condition. Excess above leads to deficiency below, causing obstruction in the blood vessels, resulting in swollen and painful feet. The Kidney meridian surrounds the root of the tongue, and the tongue is linked to the Heart. When Heart Fire is excessive, Kidney Water becomes depleted and agitated. This depletion causes the root of the tongue to retract, leading to tongue retraction and inability to speak.)
A distinct Long Pulse at the Right Cun position indicates injury from vomiting blood. (The Kidneys govern saliva. Their meridian enters the Lungs and follows the throat. Blood rises with the fire, leading to hemoptysis or spitting of blood.)
A Long Pulse at the Guan and Zhong positions indicates shortness of Qi and pain in the thighs as if broken. (The Long Pulse originally belongs to the Liver. Wood pathogen overacting on Earth leads to Spleen deficiency and insufficiency of Middle Qi. The inner part of the limb is called "Bi" (thigh), which is traversed by the Stomach meridian. Stomach deficiency causes Spleen pain feeling like a break. Furthermore, when the Spleen harbors pathogens, their Qi also remains in both thighs.)
A Long Pulse at the Chi position indicates unbearable lower back pain. (Excessive Fire leads to deficient Water. The waist is the mansion of the Kidneys. Kidney emptiness results in lower back pain.)
The pulse fails to reach its proper position, appearing contracted and short—this is a Short Pulse. (A Short Pulse indicates Qi pathology. However, a short and choppy Lung Pulse in autumn is considered a normal pulse.)
A Slippery-Short pulse indicates alcohol damage; a Floating-Short pulse indicates coughing. A Short Pulse at the Cun position primarily causes headache; at the Chi position, abdominal fullness. (The Short Pulse mainly indicates conditions of insufficiency. Alcohol damage and coughing reflect insufficient Qi. Insufficiency above causes headache; insufficiency below causes abdominal fullness.)
(Referred to as "Small" in the *Nei Jing*.) Ru (Soft) pulse (Same as "Ruan"). Ruo (Weak) pulse (*Mai Jing* defines Floating-Fine as Ru and Deep-Fine as Ruo. Does the Fine pulse lack a floating phase? Is it only examined where it is neither floating nor deep? Why does the *Nei Jing* mention deep-fine? Moreover, the Classics say: "A weak and slippery pulse indicates Stomach Qi." Slippery means flowing smoothly and deeply. If deep-fine were defined as weak, the slipperiness would not be visible within the deep-fine quality. Also, since *Mai Jing* defines deep-fine as weak, why does it mention floating-weak when discussing Lung Atrophy? Based on the *Nei Jing*, a string-taut and weak pulse is the healthy pulse for the Liver. Therefore, "weak" here refers to lack of force. One cannot define floating-fine as Ru and deep-fine as Ruo. Furthermore, diseases governed by Ru/Ruo are generally similar to those of the Fine pulse. This is appended here.)
Fine as a straight silk thread indicates damage to Blood and Qi from overwork. (The Fine Pulse mainly indicates dual deficiency of Qi and Blood.)
Sweating occurs, followed by palpitations. (Floating-Fine belongs to Yin deficiency, often presenting with night sweats. Deep-Fine belongs to Yang deficiency, often presenting with spontaneous sweating. Excessive sweating depletes Heart Qi, causing palpitations.)
Fine pulse at the Cun suggests vomiting; at the Guan, distension. (Spleen and Stomach deficiency-cold leads to vomiting upward and abdominal fullness downward.)
Fine pulse at the Chi indicates bone-steaming fever, chronic dysentery, and Bi syndrome. (Bone-steaming and chronic dysentery belong to Kidney deficiency, hence the Fine pulse. Bi syndrome is caused by cold-damp Yin pathogens, hence the Fine pulse as well.)
