[Bauhinia Purpurea Cortex]
Bitter in taste. Neutral in nature. Non-toxic. Internally inherits the clear and cold nature of heaven and earth. Externally grows by absorbing the initial yang qi of the south.
[Indications] Primarily breaks up old blood stasis. Relieves five types of strangury (Wu Lin). Decoct with strong water and take the juice. (Kaibao) Invigorates blood, moves qi, reduces swelling, and resolves toxicity. Treats women's blood-qi pain and sluggish menstrual flow. (Shizhen)
[Meridian Tropism] Enters the Liver Meridian. It is a substance that overcomes heat, drains accumulation, and breaks blood stasis. (Key surgical herb; Herb for the Blood aspect of the Liver, Heart, and Pericardium)
[Preliminary Discussion] Zhang Shizhi said: Cold overcomes heat. Bitterness enters the bones. Purple color enters the Ying (Nutritive) level. Therefore, it can invigorate blood, reduce swelling, promote urination, and resolve toxicity.
Ao's Note: Bauhinia Purpurea Cortex is an essential herb for treating falls and injuries, precisely because it can break up old blood stasis and move stagnant qi.
[Mimosa Tree Flower Bud]
Sweet in taste. Neutral in nature, slightly cold. Non-toxic. Inherits the qi of Earth and is additionally influenced by the qi of winter and spring.
[Indications] Primarily clears blindness, corneal opacity, redness, and swelling. Reduces excessive eye discharge and tearing. Eliminates red vessels in the eyes. Treats children's "KT beans" (likely referring to specific pediatric eye conditions or nodules) and malnutrition affecting the eyes. (Kaibao) Treats photophobia and fear of light.
[Meridian Tropism] Enters the Liver Meridian. It is a mild and moistening substance. (Enters both the Qi and Blood aspects of this classic text; Moistens Liver dryness)
[Preliminary Discussion] Zhongchun said: Its buds sprout in winter and bloom in spring. Therefore, it is a principal herb for the Jueyin Liver organ. However, its shape resembles that of Genkwa Flos (Daphne Genkwa). Genkwa is narrow and small, whereas Mimosa Tree Flower Bud is significantly larger and different. They should be carefully distinguished.
Ao's Note: The Materia Medica details various indications for Mimosa Tree Flower Bud, all of which are essentially caused by Liver deficiency with heat. For the eyes are the orifices of the Liver. The eyes can see when nourished by blood.
[Sichuan Pepper]
Pungent in taste. Warm in nature. Non-toxic. Receives the Yang of the South and the Yin of the West. Born from inheriting the Qi of Fire and Metal. It can ascend and descend; it is Yang. Ephedrae Herba serves as an assistant. Tastes best with salt. Averse to Adenophorae Radix (Kudzu Root? Note: Text says Kuantonghua - Sinopodophylli Rhizoma/Fructus? No, Kuandonghua is Sinokiremonis Flos), Saposhnikoviae Radix, Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, and Realgar. Can absorb mercury. Poisoning can be resolved with cool water mixed with sesame paste. Closed-mouth peppers are lethal. Excessive consumption leads to fatigue, shortness of breath, and rapid breathing. Long-term consumption causes blindness, damages blood vessels. Consuming it in May damages Qi, harms the Heart, and causes forgetfulness.
[Indications] Primarily treats pathogenic factors, cough and asthma, warms the Middle Jiao, expels dead flesh from joints and skin, relieves bi-syndrome pain with alternating chills and fever, and directs Qi downward. (Shennong Ben Cao Jing) Disperses cold, removes dampness, and resolves stagnation.
[Meridian Tropism] Enters the Spleen and Lung Meridians, and also enters the Pericardium Meridian. It is a substance that disperses cold, expels dampness, and tonifies Fire. (Also a drying agent)
[Preliminary Discussion] Wu Meng said: Its aroma is fragrant. Its nature descends. It can direct fire and heat downward, preventing them from steaming upward. Xu Shumi said: Whenever Kidney Qi rebels upward...
[Contraindications] Jingshu said: Those with inherent heat in the Lungs and Stomach, accumulated heat in the Large Intestine, and all cases of Yin deficiency with Yang hyperactivity where fire and heat rush upward, must avoid it.
[Processing] Kou Zongshi said: When using it, stir-fry lightly until sweat appears. While hot, place it in a bamboo tube, pound it to remove the yellow inner shell, and use the red part. If not fully processed, pound again.
