[Luo Shi (Trachelospermum Jasminoides)]
Bitter in taste, slightly cold in nature, non-toxic. It inherits the command of Shaoyang (Shaoyang refers to the Gallbladder meridian, governing the generation and growth of Qi) and is born with the Yin Qi of the Earth. Radix Paeoniae Rubra (Danpi) serves as its guiding herb. It is incompatible with Ferri Oxidatum (Tieluo). It fears Fritillaria Thunbergii Bulb (Beimu) and Acorus Tatarinowii Rhizome (Changpu).
[Indications] Primarily treats muscle necrosis caused by wind-heat. Dry mouth and scorched tongue after ulceration of carbuncles. Unresolved carbuncle swelling. Swelling of the throat and tongue causing obstruction. Inability to swallow water or food. (From *Shennong Bencao Jing*) Severe fright entering the abdomen (referring to qi rebellion due to fright entering the abdomen).
[Meridian Tropism] Enters the Heart, Liver, Kidney, Gallbladder, and Stomach meridians. It is a substance that cools blood and reduces fever.
[Preliminary Discussion] Li Shizhen said: Luo Shi has durable properties and mild flavor. Shennong listed it among the superior grade herbs. Li Dangzhi called it the lord of medicines. Its efficacy lies primarily in relaxing tendons and activating collaterals. For patients suffering from tendon and vessel spasms with difficulty in extension and flexion, taking this herb invariably yields effective results, tested repeatedly with consistent success.
[Contraindications] Miao Xiyong said: Those with Yin organ constitution who fear cold and are prone to diarrhea should avoid taking it.
[Processing] Lei Gong said: When used, take the vine growing on living stones; do not use those lacking woody fragrance. Wipe off the hairs with coarse cloth, then soak in cooked Licorice Root (Gancao) water for one day and night.
[Ma Bo (Lasiosphaera Fenzlii / Scleroderma Citrinum)]
Pungent in taste, neutral in nature, non-toxic.
[Indications] Primarily treats malignant sores. Horse scabies (scabies on horses), also known as Ma Pi. (From *Shennong Bencao Jing*) Primarily clears the Lungs. Disperses blood and stops coughing. Treats sore throat and pain due to throat obstruction. Epistaxis and loss of voice.
[Meridian Tropism] Enters the Lung meridian. It is a heat-relieving substance.
[Preliminary Discussion] Li Shizhen said: Ma Bo is light and hollow, acting on the Upper Jiao Lung meridian. Li Dongyuan used it in Puji Xiaodu Yin for treating big head disease with unfavorable throat conditions.
Above: Grass Category of Expelling Agents
[Xin Yi (Magnolia Flower Bud)]
Pungent in taste, warm in nature, non-toxic. It inherits the Qi of Spring Yang to be born. It ascends and belongs to Yang. Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong) serves as its guiding herb. It is incompatible with Five-Stone Lip (Wushizhi). It fears Acorus Tatarinowii Rhizome (Changpu), Polygonum Multiflorum Seed (Puhuang), Coptis Chinensis Rhizome (Huanglian), and Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao).
[Indications] Primarily treats wind-cold-heat affecting the five viscera and body. Headache. Long-term consumption can direct Qi downward and brighten the eyes. (From *Shennong Bencao Jing*) Benefits the nine orifices. Relieves nasal congestion and discharge. Treats facial swelling radiating to toothache. Dizziness. Sensation of swaying as if in a moving vehicle or boat. Promotes hair growth. Eliminates white worms. (From *Bencao Bie Lu*) Opens blocked pulses. Treats headache with aversion to cold and body rigidity. (From *Bencao Dahua*) Nasal sinusitis (Bi Yuan). Allergic rhinitis (Bi Qiu). Nasal obstruction (Bi Zhi). Nasal sores. And nasal sores after smallpox/variolous eruptions. Grind into powder, add a small amount of Moschus (Shexiang), dip in green onion white, and insert multiple times into the nose. Very effective. (From *Bencao Gangmu*)
[Meridian Tropism] Enters the Lung and Stomach meridians. It is a pungent, aromatic, and penetrating substance. (Acts on the Qi level of these two meridians, assisting the clear Yang of the Stomach to ascend through to the vertex of the head.)
[Preliminary Discussion] Wang Ji said: The Lung governs the nose. If Gallbladder heat transfers to the brain, excessive turbid nasal discharge occurs, forming Bi Yuan. If wind-cold invades the brain, the nose becomes cold. The classics state: Brain seepage forms mucus. Wang Bing said: Unclear Gallbladder fluid results in turbid mucus, flowing endlessly like a spring, hence called Bi Yuan. Li Shizhen said: The Lung opens into the nose, and the Yangming Stomach meridian circles the nose and ascends. The brain is the mansion of the primordial spirit. The nose is the aperture of the life gate. If the middle Qi of a person is insufficient and clear Yang fails to ascend, the head will tilt.
[Contraindications] Miao Xiyong said: Those with Qi deficiency should avoid it. Even if experiencing nasal congestion due to occasional wind-cold invasion, it should be avoided. Those with headache due to Blood deficiency and blazing fire should avoid it. Toothache due to Stomach fire...
