The *Neijing* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Classic) states: Heaven nourishes humans with the Five Qi, and Earth nourishes humans with the Five Flavors. Fruits, vegetables, and grains are all products of the Earth. It also says: The Five Grains serve as nourishment, the Five Fruits as assistance, and the Five Vegetables as supplementation. Therefore, the fruit of herbs is called "shen" (mulberry), and the fruit of trees is called "guo" (fruit). The *Liji* (Book of Rites) states: Dates are called "Xin zhi", chestnuts are called "Zhuan zhi", peaches are called "Dan zhi", and pears are called "Cuan zhi". This shows that there are methods for preparing fruits. Cooking okra involves cutting the pot-like calyx, recorded in the *Odes of Bin*. Using mustard sauce to make soup to nourish parents shows that there is a way to use vegetables. Beef pairs well with mutton, mutton with broomcorn millet, pork with foxtail millet, dog meat with barnyard millet, and goose meat with wheat. This shows that pairing with grains has its rules. However, among these foods, some are not suitable for frequent consumption, and some are absolutely forbidden. Medical classics state: The generation of Yin essence originates from the Five Flavors; yet the five viscera storing Yin essence are damaged by the Five Flavors. How can people not know their taboos?
